Sandra Nikolai is the author of a mystery series featuring ghostwriter Megan Scott and investigative reporter Michael Elliott. FALSE IMPRESSIONS and FATAL WHISPERS are the first two books in the series.

Sandra has also published a string of short stories, winning Honorable Mentions along the way. TIMELY ESCAPE is a heart-pounding short story and prequel to ICY SILENCE, the third book in the Megan Scott/Michael Elliott Mystery series.

ICY SILENCE is book # 3 in the series, but the first book in the series that I have read.
Sandra Nikolai is the author of a series of mystery novels featuring ghostwriter Megan Scott and investigative reporter Michael Elliott.

“Her genre is a combination of amateur sleuth, crime thriller, and suspense with a hint of romance. Her two sleuths, a ghostwriter Megan Scott and investigative reporter Michael Elliott face thrilling challenges as they try to find ruthless murderers and stay alive in the process!”

The title and cover of this novel set the stage for what is to come. The weather sets the scene on this cold blistery day, for the trip to the elite boarding school. Located in a rural area in Quebec. ( the route from Montreal to the Eastern Townships). For someone who was born in Montreal and went to school there, I can definitely relate to the setting, as it congers up all kinds of memories.

Megan Scott and Michael Elliott had been invited by their friend Dave Pellegrino, who works on campus, to speak at a private boarding school about career path…but when they arrive everything changes.

Two students died this week on campus, and the police tape was already up.

“Dave’s car gets stolen and two dead students are found inside it. It implies someone took advantage of him and is trying to shed a negative light on him.”

Dave is brought in for questioning, and Megan and Michael need to prove Dave’s innocence and catch the real killer.

A powerful ice storm was intensifying and everyone on campus was cut off from the rest of the world.-with a possible Killer on campus? The ice storm knocks out power and water, and causes everyone to panic. A frantic search for a cold-blooded killer…and secrets they did not expect.

I loved this book, as the clues are disclosed on a need-to-know basis. The characters are real and believable. This is definitely a page-turner packed with all kinds of suspense, surprises and will keep you guessing until the very last page.

My sincere thanks to the author who furnished a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. I look forward to reading other novels that she has written. After enjoying this book so much, I will definitely be reading her first two books that I have on my Kindle.

WOW!!! This is one of those superb mystery thrillers where my one line review would be don’t bother reading my review, just read this amazing book! It is a real page turner and I can safely say that you don’t need to have read the earlier two books in the series to appreciate this one, because I haven’t read them - but I definitely want to now!

Megan Scott and Michael Elliot are guest speakers at a careers day special at a well established, exclusive, expensive boarding school, miles from anywhere, when a powerful ice storm isolates them, the staff and students even more. The tension is built, as the two realise they could all be trapped with a possible killer lurking unknown on the campus and continues to mount, with hints of links to Megan’s past and so much more.... Without power, water or communication with the outside world, the two visitors are going to endeavour to discover what happened to the two students who lost their lives days before.

With great, well portrayed characters, the plot slowly reveals more clues whilst suspense and intrigue pervade every page. This is an enthralling, edge of your seat, page turner, a riveting read that I have no hesitation at all in highly recommending to anyone who enjoys well written, pacy thrillers with a dynamic duo acting as detectives in this brilliant, engaging novel.

Thanks to the author for letting me read an ecopy of this book in exchange for this, an honest review.

Icy Silence is the first Sandra Nikolai book I've read. I must admit, I hadn't heard of her before she contacted the Crimebookjunkie book blog who I guest review for but I'm glad she did as I've discovered a new author!

Icy Silence is written from Megan's point of view, she's a ghostwriter with an investigative journalist as a partner, Michael. They're stranded at an elite boarding school after doing a careers talk for one of Michael's old friends. Little do they know when they arrive it's going to turn into a weekend they might not forget with murder, food rations, freak (well freak for a Brit reader) weather and power cuts.

There were points during my reading, I forgot I was in the UK and thought I was in a very chilly and icy Canada! I'd wake up in the morning thinking about the snow and ice outside, both things I'm not a fan of if I have to leave the house!!

Megan and Michael are likeable characters. It's a refreshing change to have a mystery crime novel that doesn't involve someone from the police or law enforcement which are my usual reads.

I will be reading more about Megan and Michael; in fact I have already downloaded Timely Escape which is a short story prequel to Icy Silence.

This is a good clean thriller with suspense to keep you guessing right to the end! This is the third Megan and Michael book but having not read the previous stories, I didn't feel I was missing out.

Thank you to Sandra Nikolai and Crimebookjunkie book blog for this ebook for my honest review.

The author did an excellent job of keeping the tension level high, raising it along the way to a final satisfying climax.

Megan Scott puts a romantic interlude on hold to accompany Michael Elliott on a trip to an exclusive college where he will give a talk on investigative reporting. Suddenly, students lives are in danger not only from unexplained human sources but from the dangers of a widespread and extended ice storm. Tension rises as circumstantial evidence points to an unresolved event in Megan's past.

I have read the first two novels in this series and enjoy following the cases of the two protagonists, Megan Scott and Michael Elliott. They work well together without undue friction that could come from mixing business and personal relationships. I look forward to the fourth novel in this mystery series.

When Michael is invited by his old journalist colleague Dave to give a talk at the prestigious fee paying school where he teaches, Michael agrees and takes along his girlfriend, ghost writer Megan.

On arrival, there seems to be some police activity and the couple are informed that two of the students, Natalie and Andrew, have been found dead in what looks like a murder suicide.

When Dave is taken to the local police station for questioning in relation to the students’ deaths, he asks for the pairs help in proving his innocence and discovering just what really happened to the students.

Icy Silence is a murder mystery novel set in the grounds of a boarder school. The rules and guidelines for all the students and staff are extremely strict, and any problems within the school are dealt with by the head of the school, as too much bad publicity may lose them money from some of their biggest investors.

The book is told from Megan’s perspective as she and Michael try to uncover a web of lies and secrets surrounding the students deaths, and the subsequent problems that arise during their stay at the school. Their investigation is hampered when one of the worse ice storms to hit the area arrives, bringing down power lines and cutting the school off from the rest of town.

There are a lot of characters in the book with Megan and Michael at the forefront at all times. Megan I found a bit irksome at the beginning, though she did grow on me in the end. She turned out to be a force to be reckoned with, and could certainly hold her own and didn’t let fear take over. Michael however, I found to be a little annoying all the way through, especially when he was always wanting to put himself in harms way just to get a story.

The book started off quite slowly and I was eager for the action to kick in. After a few chapters of the couple mainly just having conversations with staff, students and between themselves, checking on various leads, the book finally got down to some action, although sometimes the action seemed a bit far-fetched for my liking.

The book for me was a tale of two halves, and I wanted the action to kick off sooner, but when it did, the book became very enjoyable.

An interesting read, with a little bit of Shakespeare thrown in for good measure.

( Format : Audiobook )
" Messy problems to take care of. "
Icy Silence is a closed location mystery with a rather old fashioned feel, as if lifted from a Girl's Own magazine rather than being a modern mystery. All jolly good fun and hockey sticks (or base ball bats) rather than a more realistic thriller. There's even an absent, but dastardly French villain, rumours of hidden tunnels and a sell in the grounds. Set in an exclusive and very expensive boarding school located out in the wilds of Quebec, the intrepid team of Michael, reporter, and Megan, ghost writer, go to the school ostensibly as guest speakers but really because of a cry for help from one of the teachers. But as the freak ice storm traps them, closing roads and isolated without power or means of communication, those still in the school have more to face than lack of heating, light and laptops, so the not so dynamic duo determine to sort it all out.

Written in the first person from the point of view of Megan, the reader is privy not only to all of the ongoing investigation but also the internal workings of her mind. All of the protagonists feel more like cartoon images than real, three dimensional characters, and the story is naive and predictable. But, and it is a big but, it is, nevertheless, quite enjoyable. An easy, undemanding read with the added advantage of a good narrator to tell the story. Her pleasant voice is clear and well modulated and, although her attempts at male voices is flawed, she does an excellent Mrs.Desmond, Dean of the institution, and of Sophie, a reluctant witness.

My thanks to the rights holder of Icy Silence, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. This was a modern day old fashioned fun story, refreshingly naive and easy to read.

Fantastic Cozy Mystery Thriller Mix

Book three continues with Megan and Michael, they've been together now a couple years. Michael is investigating a story at an exclusive private Canadian college. It goes from normal job hazards to outright dangerous as bodies turns up, the ice storm causes them to loose power and cell reception and they start receiving ominous threats. I definitely recommend this series to both cozy and thriller fans a like. This one had plenty of twists and turns and was definitely hard to stop listening to.

Parents- PG13 - drug content/drug boss backdrop
Language- some but not overly excessive and no f-bombs
Violence- nothing overly graphic, several dead bodies, severed finger and beatings
Sexual Content- Really it's kept pretty clean- no explicit bedroom scenes, attraction/desire and some kissing but nothing hot and heavy

Narrator- 4⭐ really did a great job with the voice differentiation and was fun to listen to. I did prefer listening at 1.3x speed.

Winter in the frozen North where an expensive boarding school is having more problems than the bad weather. Megan is a ghostwriter with an investigative journalist as a partner, Michael. They're at the school so that Michael can give a talk on investigative reporting at the request of his old friend. What they find is evidence of murder with a cover up, drugs issues, and a winter storm that totally isolates without hope of inviting law enforcement. together they work through all the clues and threats to THEIR personal safety. Great story with lots of suspense!
Kelli Tager has a pleasant voice that is clear and well modulated but her attempts at male voices is less than optimal but she does an excellent job with the females and also with character differentiation.
I won this audio in a giveaway! Yay me!

The third book in the series can be read as standalone — I've read them all out of order. :) Prior events are mentioned, but there's enough context to explain what readers need to know.

This was an excellent mystery that kept me guessing, which I've come to expect. Things kept going from bad to worse, causing Megan and Michael to constantly adapt as they investigated murders, thefts, and drug dealing while handling a bunch of teenagers forced to live with no technology due to a power outage that lasted for days.

There are some humourous moments in between the action, drama, and scary scenes. Sometimes I get a damsel vibe from Megan, but she was clever and brave when it counted.

Kelli Tager's performance made listening to the story enjoyable. She always does a great job of channeling Megan.

I really enjoyed this book, the tension was kept high all from the start and the characters are well written and are very interesting to follow. The story has a good pace and it keeps the reader interested and wondering what's gonna happen next. However, I was a bit disappointed by the end, I felt something was missing, the twists weren't entirely surprising, I didn't really feel the main characters were in any real danger and, in my eyes, the last three chapters felt a bit rushed. That's the only reason why I can't rate it higher, but don't let that keep you from reading this book, if you want to read a thriller with a little mystery, you'll definitely enjoy this one.

If you enjoy fast-moving mysteries with boarding school settings, this is for you. I found myself sucked into the story quickly and rooting for the main characters to solve the mystery. I enjoyed the atmospheric qualities of the book, particularly the scenario of the ice storm. I listened to this as an audio book and highly suggest that format. Kelli Tager narrates with an engaging tone that keeps you listening eagerly for the next chapter. I will be looking for other audio books narrated by Kelli Tager.

"Icy Silence" was my first experience with Sandra Nikolai's work, and it was entertaining. I was drawn to the story by the title. I thought the mystery was complex; however, I didn't think that the characters were believable. It is possible that I didn't have a full picture of the characters as I started the series with book 3, but it seemed that Megan, who was a ghost writer, was more venturesome than Michael Elliott, who was an investigative reporter. Kelli Tager's narration was fine. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Ghost writer Megan Scott and investigative reporter Michael Elliott travel to an isolated college prep school in rural Quebec province for career day presentations only to discover a police investigation into the deaths of two students. An historic ice storm strands the two at the elite school along with a potential killer. With no lights, water, or cell phones, it's a race against time and nature to discover who is behind the deaths before the two meet the same fate. An atmospheric and suspenseful story.

This story kept me guessing nearly to the intentional reveal. It seemed plausible enough and quite suspenseful. The characters were well drawn and believable. It was an engrossing listen.

Kelli Tager's performance is outstanding. She gives distinctive and appropriate voices to the characters and is consistent with her performance of previous audiobooks in this series.

This was a very entertaining a well written story. I would consider it a cozy mystery. It is safe for teenage up audiences and has a sound mystery.
The characters were well developed as well as the plot. I didn't immediately figure it out either so extra kudos to the author for some nice twists!
The narrator was spot on this work. Great narration.

Good but not great.

Was interesting but did not hold my interest as much as others. The couple Mike and Megan are nice but not enough personalization

Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Narrated by Kelli Tager, this story centers around and elite school with secrets no one could have imagined; what should been a lovely speaking engagement at the school becomes nightmare for those trapped there as a wicked storm blows in. Add in a murderer, and his place of learning could become a grave of you cannot outwit a person out for blood. Intense and unexpected and highly recommended.

An isolated boarding school with extremely strict rules is the setting for career day. Michael and Megan were invited to speak to a class about their jobs. It was also going to be a chance for Michael to catch up with an old friend. When they arrive, the school is nothing like either of them imagined. A weekend trip becomes so much more.

This book is a very easy read. A simple mystery with no real big surprises. I liked the story line. It was well plotted and written. The main characters don't seem to be very enlightened. They also aren't completely believable. Their are un-needed details and the author seems to underestimate what the characters are thinking. Ms. Nikolai does a really great job of building a suspect list and she ties up all the story lines. This book will be the perfect quick read for someone who just wants a little distraction.

I listed the issues above.

I gave this one 4 cheers out of 5 because of the issues. ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~
