Joy Fielding (née Tepperman; born March 18, 1945) is a Canadian novelist and actress. She lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, she graduated from the University of Toronto in 1966, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. As Joy Tepperman, she had a brief acting career, appearing in the film Winter Kept Us Warm (1965) and in an episode of Gunsmoke. She later changed her last name to Fielding (after Henry Fielding) and began writing novels.
Fielding is also the screenwriter of the television film Golden Will: The Silken Laumann Story.

At the age of 8, Joy Tepperman wrote her first story and sent it into a local magazine, and at age 12 sent in her first TV script, however both were rejected. She had a brief acting career, eventually giving it up to write full-time in 1972. She has published to date 22 novels, two of which were converted into film. Fielding's process of having an idea to the point the novel is finished generally takes a year, the writing itself taking four to eight months. Joy Fielding sets most of her novels in American cities such as Boston and Chicago. She has said that she prefers to set her novels in "big American cities, [as the] landscape seems best for [her] themes of urban alienation and loss of identity. Fielding is a Canadian citizen. Her husband's name is Warren, and they have two daughters, Annie and Shannon. They have property in Toronto, Ontario, as well as Palm Beach, Florida.

Fielding had an interview with the Vancouver Sun in 2007, just after her publication of Heartstopper. She enjoys catching readers off guard with the endings of her stories, but insists that "[it] isn't what her fiction is about", but rather more about the development of her characters. Discussing her novels with the Toronto Star in 2008, she said "I might not write fiction in the literary sense. But I write very well. My characters are good. My dialog is good. And my stories are really involving. I'm writing exactly the kind of books I like to write. And they're the kind of books I like to read. They're popular commercial fiction. That's what they are."

Fielding has been noted as a novelist who is more popular in the United States and foreign countries, rather than in her native Canada. For example, the novel Kiss Mommy Goodbye was more popular in the States, and See Jane Run in Germany. In addition, she had an American agent and publisher, although she has now switched to a Canadian publisher.

Weird.

The Dead End is a psychological mystery thriller.

I found this book at a sidewalk sale for 25 cents. The back cover:

The phone rang. She picked it up and a chilling voice said: “You’ve been a bad girl. I’m going to take down your panties and spank you…And them I’m going to kill you….”

What can I say? I’m a sucker for spankings and death! Sold!

Unfortunately, the only reason I finished this book is because I HAD to find out WHO the stalker psycho was. I suppose that’s the point of the book. Some nutjob makes weird phone calls and scares the crap out of a housewife and mother. Her husband recently left her. Her kids are at summer camp. Her friend is completely losing her mind. What more can a girl ask for?

The first 25 pages slammed me into a coma. I slept so hard and woke up revived! Best night’s sleep in a long time.

Next 50 pages, I’m trying to decide whether or not I should toss the book aside and hope it never resurfaces or to organize my kindle.

The next 150 pages, the drama and back and forth became pretty damned tiresome.

Joanne struggled through this entire book and deserving so. The problems with her children trying to eat each other alive is the least of her problems. Her best friend of 30 years scares the shit out of her. And her bastard of a husband “needs more time to think about his life.” Bastard.

What do you do, she asks herself, when somebody suddenly stops loving you?

Out of all of the screwed up bits in this book, the relationship with her husband irritated me the most. I mean, being married for 20 years is something to fight over! Sure, that sounds wonderful. But what if there is a little skanky blonde named Judy that’s buffing your husband? Do you still wait around hoping he’ll come home? Do you still pretty yourself up just in case he wants to have coffee?

That about says it.

I did not like this book. It was slow and about bored me to death.

I will not recommend this book to anyone. I’m sure there are others out there that just soak this kind of book up. Not me. Let them recommend it, I’m sticking with my story! Heh .. Coma worthy. On the other hand, a great sleep aid.

Unbeantwortete Fragen: was wird aus Eve? Was passiert mit Allen? Wo ist Brian hin? Darum ein Stern weniger. Sonst wirklich gut und spannend.

I read this such a long time ago my only vague memories are of a woman in a house with an unfinished pool in the backyard having to deal with a creepy stalker and an absent, douchey husband. Reading other descriptions about this book, I'm surprised I couldn't remember a thing about the unsupportive psychosomatic best friend next door and the fact that the protaganist, Joanne, has two teens living with her and a beloved grandfather in hospital. I guess that speaks to how alone Joanne truly is in her struggle with the creepy caller but it might also speak to this book being fairly pedestrian and unmemorable.

Not my favourite by Joy. I was left feeling disappointed at the end- and I found the climax of the novel rushed. The buildup, that took the entire novel expect the last 20 pages, was drawn out, a little confusing at times and just didn’t seem to flow well.

Summary:
Joanne Hunter gets threatening phone calls from someone who seems to be a currently active serial killer. Her childhood best friend and next door neighbor Eve reassures her that its probably an imposter and no big deal. Her husband starts having a mid-life crisis, and moves out of the house temporarily. Eve starts to have unexplainable symptoms, and people stop believing that the phone calls are real. Stuff happens, Joanne does a lot of personal growth, turns out she wasn't hallucinating the phone calls, Eve finally sees a psychologist. The end.

Review:
Overall a fun read, I enjoyed the tone around the phone calls and whether they're real or not. There are a good number of places where you can tell that it was written in 1986, but it wasn't grating enough to take me out of the story. I thought it was interesting the way that the main character related to herself and being a woman, and how she felt she hadn't grown up. The repetition of "Mrs. Hunter" really put me in her mind as shes becoming more and more agitated and jumpy whenever she hears her name. I also enjoyed the motif of the half finished pool, as paralleling Joanne.

I am in the process of "streamlining" my bookcases. I have close to 1,000 books, and I know there are many I am no longer interested in reading. Then, I am committing myself to reading many of the ones I keep before checking out any new one! This was one I acquired years ago, and kept, because I remember really liking Joy Fielding. As the times have changed, so has my taste in books, and I found I really didn't enjoy this much. The only reason I kept reading was to see what was really going on. There were many characters, and each of them was an obvious red herring. The main character irritated me, and I would have totally rewritten the ending. I guess the only reason I am rating it a 2 is because I was interested enough to find out who the "bad guy" was.

Joanne Hunter has been married to her husband Paul for over 20 years. They have two daughters, Robin and Lana; Lana goes by Lulu. Joanne's best friend Eve lives next door with her husband, Brian. Eve recently had a miscarriage and believes her body is falling apart or that she has something wrong because she is always in pain. There's also Eve's mom who is trying her best but ultimately keeps annoying her daughter. Before the pain becomes too bad for her to take, she joins Joanne for tennis lessons with a man 20 years their junior who they both admit is rather attractive. Her grandfather is in a nursing home, sharing a room with another elderly man, and her grandfather thinks she is actually her mother, his daughter, Linda. When Paul decides they should separate, their daughters initially blame her for it. She already has something of a strained relationship with Robin, the eldest, so this doesn't help. On top of the things going on around her, shortly after her husband moves out, she starts getting strange phone calls from a voice that sounds androgynous and eventually turns threatening.

Honestly, I loved the first book of hers that I've read, called "See Jane Run," which was released in 1991. It was very much an edge-of-your-seat thriller and I'm waiting for my fiancé to read it so we can watch the made-for-TV adaptation. This one... did not leave me on the edge of my seat and I took a bit longer to read this one than the other one. Most of this book is not about the mysterious/threatening phone calls; most of this is actually about the stuff going on in her life and particularly Eve's life. I think Paul was a complete tool and a total jerk. Brian was no better when he decided to assault Eve. Honestly, if Brian is telling the truth and he and Eve are just married, but not romantically, they should really either seek out a therapist or -- I shudder to suggest -- divorce since he physically assaulted her. The other characters are frankly too small to really mention.

Fielding did a good job making you question who the seemingly androgynous caller could be in this one, but in reflecting on the other book of hers that I mentioned, I feel like she may have gotten better with her writing after this book was published in 1986. I feel like focusing so much on the other stuff in her life was a bit distracting and prevented me from being on the edge of my seat. The scene with the face-off with the caller should've been longer.. I also wish we would've found out definitively if Paul cheated on her with Judy.

*shrugs* It was still a good read, but not as good as "See Jane Run." 3 stars.

Enjoyed other works written by Fielding but this one was a disappointment. The whole story seemed all over the place; the book seemed mainly to be about the scary calls, however it felt as if the author only really paid attention to them in the beginning and then kind of lost sight throughout the story, only to reveal who it was at the very last moment, when I had already lost interest in the calls again.
Towards the end especially the whole focus seemed to be on Eve going crazy- but this was not even mentioned anymore? What was the whole point of her going insane when it plays absolutely no role whatsoever in the plot?
I was expecting some fun "Eve being poisened by her own mother/by Joanne's husband because they had an affair/ Joanne turning out to be poising Eve" twist in the end but instead there was literally nothing.
Lead to me feeling very frustrated when I finished the book.
I also don't agree with Joanne just happily getting back with her husband after he a) just randomly leaves her for a younger girl and then b) leaves her again after he got her into bed again. Sad to see she has so little self-respect, especially after that whole "I was a shy girl now I am a strong woman"-narrative.

All those things combined just did not make the book very fun to read, unfortunately.

While I truly loved this book and couldn't put it down, it did have a few shortcomings. I was not thrilled at the total dependency of the heroine on her husband. She should have gotten a job long before she did. Her BFF was nuts and no help to her at all, and finally had a total breakdown. Her husband was a worthless wuss -- forty some years old and "going to find himself". He needed to be home taking care of his spoiled, bratty children. About the nicest person in the book was Ron -- the guy who gave her a job. And the grandfather, of course. Eve, her husband, and her mother ALL needed some psychiatric intervention. Oh, I almost forgot -- her brother seemed sane. Even if he was a surgeon and STILL wanted to be an actor. I guess this book could have been about friendship, but the fact that one of them was totally crazed made it hard to envision. All in all, I STILL love Joy Fielding. And even her less-than-great books are wonderful. Once I get hooked on an author, nothing will change my mind.

An interesting book by a talented author. I wasn't sure what to expect from Joy Fielding's "The Deep End," but the premise--a suburban mother who is getting threatening phone calls--reminded me of books by Mary Higgins Clark that I inhaled as a teenager.

While I would classify this more as a "lite domestic suspense" rather than a thriller, it was interesting and the writing, beautiful. It was a combination of women's fiction/family drama and mystery--heavier on the women's fiction/family drama aspect.

The character of Joanne Hunter was really well developed. I found parts of the book dragged and at one point (about 2/3 of the way in) I had to push myself to keep going. But the pace picked up again and I enjoyed it overall. Joy Fielding is really a talented writer and I felt like I was Joanne's best friend by the end of the book.

Joanne's husband leaves her because he wants a separation to think things over.
She begins receiving threatening phone calls. Her next door neighbor who is her best friend, seems t0 be losing touch with reality. Her grandfather is nearing the end of his life at age 95. Her two daughters are away at camp. Joanne is home alone.
Through out the entire book, I waited for the phone caller to sh0w up at her h0use with intentions of killing her. With only 20 odd pages left of the story, he shows up while she is asleep.
The author tells us some of that confrontration and then drops the story line!! Disappointing.
Very disappointing.

DNF. I got to page 58 before calling it quits. Dialogue and actions seemed unrealistic and I did not care about any of the characters. There were several instances of eye rolling paired with expletives because of the sexism; apparently in approximately 1969 a female in high school could not dream of being a doctor. Who knew. That was the worst example I got to, there were others but I only read 58 pages. Actually, that is not quite true. I felt I had figured out who was menacing the protagonist so I flipped to the back and was rewarded with being correct so I was pleased I hadn't wasted any more time on this book.

Hin&Her

I think this book would be what is currently called psychological thriller, which is not my genre. However, if you like that theme, it is a well-written mystery, that misdirects your suspicions until very near the end. You have to decide not only who is stalking the heroine, but whether the threat really exists at all, or if she is reacting to extreme stress.

This book was written 30 years ago. The main character , Joanne, was naive as can be and made all sorts of stupid moves. Very hard to relate to given today's emphasis on safety and "stranger danger." I finished the book and Joanne finally wises up, but just hard to fathom a woman would make crazy decisions like that today. Or maybe I'm the naive one. I don't recommend.

This one hasn't really stood the test of time although the plot is familiar: man has midlife crisis (read fling with young thing) and faithful, loving, caring wife hangs and hangs and hangs in there. Eve character was just too freaky.
