Dead Soil: A Zombie Series

What happens when civilization falls and the dead rise?

"Wonderfully written. I'm pretty impressed with the story line and the characters were wonderfully put together. I love a good zombie book but unfortunately there aren't many that can capture my attention. This book is creative in its own and very descriptive" - 5 Star Review

The devastating outbreak of a new strand of fatal flu has the world concerned. As every lab in the country tries to come up with a vaccine to stop humanity from being wiped out, another threat rises---the dead. While some ignore the warning signs and fall victim to the wandering hordes of zombies, others band together in small groups in a desperate attempt to survive. Many struggle to understand, as they watch their friends and family die, whether this is a challenge to overcome or a new, permanent reality.

"This is my favorite novel by this author. I really enjoyed the setting and the characters. Every time it switches to another group of characters, I'm excited to see what happens to them while also anxious to get back to the other characters. A lot of the deaths were very surprising and I enjoyed the way characters were connected. The best zombie book I've read." - 5 Star Review

I have been writing as long as I can remember. I always knew I wanted to write books that someday many people could enjoy. I have a BA in English, a Masters in Business Administration and Marketing, and a Master's in Education.

I enjoy reading as much as I do writing and learned a lot while I was in school about the different forms of literature and the different genres all throughout the world. I only hope that people enjoy my books as much as I've enjoyed reading theirs.

When I'm not reading or writing I enjoy spending time with my family, going for walks or hiking, being outdoors, horseback riding, and watching movies.

You know - you've either got "it" or you haven't - and Alex Apostol most definitely has it!
A character driven tale of survival during an apocalypse, this one kept me absolutely riveted, fervently wishing for everything to come out right for our band of survivors and praying that a few dicks got their timely comeuppance. Of course there's zombies, but well, they're just zombies. You know, a general pain in the ass ..... and the leg .... and the neck, but mainly the gut/intestinal area in this offering. 🧟‍♂️ 🧟‍♀️ 🧠 🤮
All I know is that I simply MUST find out what happens next!

The presentation of a slower sort of zomapoc where at least some of the infrastructure starts in effect is interesting.

That said, I am 24% of the way in and I would dearly love to meet a female character who isn't incompetent, in denial, or dead. Kind of holding out hope for Carolyn[1] to come back as a survivor and righteously smite the dudes who are dispatching their former neighbours, but at this point I'm not sure it'd be enough.

=====

31% of the way in. Two more women have shown up (one alive by the grace of dudes with guns, one who got beat up by bad guys and then hooked on to the same dudes with guns group). Carolyn has also joined the dudes with guns, because she's a crying blonde and they're a sap for that, even though the author assures us she's shallow and stupid. My hopes of her smiting people are not coming to fruition.

Back at the apartment complex, Christine is still... not doing much. Being cool with her fiance going out to kill sick people (yes, zombies, but she's clinging to the "sick people" thing) every morning. Wondering how she'd ever survive if he died and not doing anything to answer the question. You know.

I'm not asking for Lyudmila Pavlichenko here, but could I get /something/?

=====

43% of the way in and there's a female character following the dudes-with-guns group. She is apparently skilled enough to not be noticed as she follows the group, hiding in shadow and tree-top. I will take it. (Her name is Anita.)

=====

51% of the way in, a month and a half into the zombie apocalypse, and Christine has just announced that she wants to help so she's going to START getting training.

=====

53% of the way in and in the space of a page a character has breathily flirted with a guy to make him agree to a plan, been rude to him so he won't think she likes him because then he might try something, and snottily implied that Carolyn, who is interested in him, is a total slut (who hasn't actually slept with any of the guys in the group in the six weeks they've been together).

(Actually, Carolyn is basically a totally beautiful blonde who is lucky for her being irresistible to guys--except all of them actually reject her, either because she's stupid and shallow or because she's stupid and shallow compared to the truly beautiful, intelligent woman who spent the first twenty-eight hours of the zombie apocalypse in high heels.)

I tried. I really did.

"But the reader of the "Deerslayer" tale dislikes the good people in it, is indifferent to the others, and wishes they would all get drowned together."

“She took a step closer and he finally looked into her eyes. They were a swirling light blue and they pierced through him like two sharp icicles. It took his breath away, not because they were stunning, which they were, but because they brought about an overwhelming sense of déja vu, like he’d already looked into those eyes, but he’d never met the woman before in his life.”

Such is the pretty writing style of Alex Apostol—but make no mistake, she does the living dead justice, with exceptionally descriptive gory decomposition and detail. In Dead Soil, we follow interesting, relatable characters as they make their way through the zombie apocalypse. The bonds and interpersonal relationships, as two disparate groups of survivors find each other, hold the reader’s attention. Some antagonists satisfyingly got what they deserved. Surprising twists throughout and a bittersweet conclusion. Well done.

The author’s writing is beautifully immersive, bringing the living dead to life with vivid, gruesome detail. The descriptions of decomposition and gore are so striking that I felt as if I were in the room, witnessing the horror unfold. Each character has a distinct backstory and personality, adding depth to the narrative.

My only critique is the portrayal of most female characters (except for Olivia and Gale at times), as they often rely on the men for survival. Hopefully, future installments will show them evolving into stronger, more self-sufficient survivors.

The antagonists meet their fates in a satisfyingly brutal way, and the story is filled with unexpected twists leading to a bittersweet but fitting conclusion. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the next book!

What happens when civilization falls and the dead rise?
The devastating outbreak of a new strand of fatal flu has the world concerned. As every lab in the country tries to come up with a vaccine to stop humanity from being wiped out, another threat rises---the dead. While some ignore the warning signs and fall victim to the wandering hordes of zombies, others band together in small groups in a desperate attempt to survive. Many struggle to understand, as they watch their friends and family die, whether this is a challenge to overcome or a new, permanent reality. Christine and Liam are building a life together in a small town in northwest Indiana. They live in a nice apartment, both have promising careers in respectable fields, and are about to take the plunge into matrimony. When the zombie plague devastates the couple by taking what small amount of people they love in the world, they have to make the choice to step up or hide behind closed doors. It's a good thing Liam has been practicing with a bow and arrow since he was five years old. Zack Kran is the couple's next-door neighbor and Liam's best friend. He owns a comic book and gaming store in the heart of Chesterton, Indiana---a small town on Lake Michigan. It was his dream to share his love of comic art and epic fantasy battles with the world. But as debt weighs on his shoulders with no one coming into the shop, he struggles with the decision to sell or not. The only ray of light to shine through the hovering gloom is a young woman named Anita, who comes in the stores simply to flirt. When the zombies overrun the town, Zack vows to find this woman he barely knows and spend the rest of his short life making sure she survives. Will the hours he spent maneuvering collective swords in front of the mirror be enough to get to her? Carolyn Bock is a HR representative at the local steel mill. Eternally on the quest for a suitable husband, she is blindsided when she finds her neighbor eating someone. She seeks shelter with Luke Benson, the librarian across the hall whom she always had he eyes on, only to be betrayed and locked inside her apartment under suspicion of being bitten. When the only person who knows she's in there flees the building, she has no choice but to find her own way out before the dead find a way in. Gale, Gretchen, Lonnie, Rowan, and Mitchell are a group of misfits wandering the expansive wooded area of the Dune's State Park to hide from the growing hordes of zombies. Lonnie Lands was appointed group leader from his acts of heroism that saved the other members. But as his head swells with power, will he become the new threat to their survival? The "Dead Soil" trilogy is not only about the horror of living in a world overrun with rotting, but shambling corpses also out to eat everything with a pulse. It's about the changes that many need to make in order to survive a world that's out to get them.

I liked how it was so comfortable to read. I’m not saying the story is boring. Not in the least. It’s a cozy zombie apocalypse story. The characters are your everyday people. It was well written and an easy fast read. It is a story about before, during and after the apocalypse. It was fun and entertaining. Now onto the next book in this series. Stay tuned.

A new strand of the flu virus has hit the streets killing millions and leaving in their wake an undead human walking around lifeless, their only goal in life is hunting the living to feed on.

Scientists all over are trying to make a vaccine that will hopefully stop this flu virus before it gets out of hand. But of course, they are too late as the dead are rising, hungry, and hunting.

Dead Soil is told from the perspective of several different characters. There is one group of people living in an apartment building who goes from apartment to apartment in search of the undead. They need to find all the dead and kill them for good, hopefully, if they want to make the building a safe place for them to live.

Each character must learn what they can do to help out the group. You know to find their place and or the job that will be beneficial to the group and themselves. They are also just figuring out how far they are willing or can go to stay alive.

I sorely enjoyed reading Dead Soil as it has plenty of action to keep the pages turning from beginning to end. I liked all the characters as they seemed so real. I loved all the blood and gore. I loved all the zombie-killing scenes.

The best part of Dead Soil for me is the zombies as I am a big zombie fan. The Walking Dead is my favorite show on TV. I love the whole Walking Dead World, The Walking Dead, Fear and Beyond. I can never seem to get enough zombies.

I can’t wait to sink my teeth in the next book in the Dead Soil Trilogy, Dead Road to see what the zombies and everyone else have in store for us.

As a huge zombie fan, I highly recommend Dead Soil to everyone! One-click your copy of this amazing zombie book, Dead Soil today for a great adventure into the zombie apocalypse!

Is the zombie apocalypse closer than we think?

Corporate lawyer Christine Moore has it all. A challenging career and a handsome, successful fiance working on a team to find a cure for a new and deadly flu strain. When Liam gets an urgent text from the doctor heading up the research project, what he finds when he arrives at the lab is his worst nightmare. Can Liam and Christine survive this terrifying new reality?

Be prepared to get sucked into the first installment of this gripping zombie series. The cast of characters are gritty and relatable, the action and suspense are non-stop. You’ll find multiple narrators with diverse back stories coming together to weave a cohesive picture of the state of things in the new normal. There are surprises right up until the very end as the constant tension keeps you on the edge of your seat. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself checking for the undead around every corner after reading this heart-stopping novel.

I loved the story, characters, and non-stop action.Typically, I remove my reality goggles when reading this genre, as there is almost always something that wouldn’t work out for one reason or another, and let’s face it, it doesn’t need to be perfectly believable to be a fun read. In this case, I just couldn’t get past the way testing a vaccine is described, especially in light of recent world events. It niggled at the back of my mind every time it was mentioned, which was frequent with it being a big part of the plot, but that may be just me. If you can let that go, you’ll enjoy the story a great deal more.

If you’re looking to get lost in zombie hell, this book’s for you!

Dead Soil was my very first zombie novel and it has continued to be my bestselling book. Life for my characters starts off normal enough in the sleepy lakeside town of Chesterton, Indiana, but when a flu vaccine goes horribly wrong the side effects are disastrous. Nationwide, people are dying and then reanimating as the hungry undead. Many of my characters choose to fortify their apartment building and band together to fight for their lives while others have no choice but to take to the wilderness of the Dunes State Park. I don't want to give too much away but there are great character arcs as each one learns what their deadliest skill is and the rules of survival in a zombie-ridden world. And, of course, there are disgusting and terrifying zombie encounters and descriptions! If you pick up a copy to read, I truly hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. The second book in the series, Dead Road, is out now and the third, Dead World, is coming in 2021!

I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Dead Soil is a zombie apocalypse book that focuses on the survival aspect. It has a large cast of characters and you follow them trying (and sometimes failing) to survive and watch their relationships develop.

I should start by saying that I am a big zombie fan and that I liked the gory descriptions of the creatures. I think it's great that the author didn't hold back on killing certain characters and I was suprised at how many deaths there were througout the book. I also liked that each character (though they sometimes felt a bit stereotypical) had a backstory. I think I would have liked to dive more into their histories. It's a fast and enjoyable read.

There were also a few things that kept the book from being a four star read though.

The writing isn't bad, but it's not that great either. I felt like there was a lot of headhopping, especially in the beginning and that the focalisation wasn't always that clear. The prose is easy to digest though.

Plotwise I felt like this book was a lot of setup and getting characters together. I did enjoy the ride, but I feel like the actual story really just got started at the end of the book. I will be picking up Dead Road at some point :)

This is my first zombie book. So bear with me!

The setting of this book makes it even more scary in a way. It incorporates relatable settings that make it easer to see yourself in this situation. It’s scary to think of a possible zombie apocalypse.

It’s relatable characters who each have their own story of survival but the back stories don’t go into too much detail which I love. It still gives them a sense of mystery.

There were twist and turns that you would expect in a zombie apocalypse novel. But it was written in a way that it still took hold of your interest.

There was just enough action and events to keep the interest of the reader. When I felt my attention start to slip a bit there was another event or situation that pulled me back into the story.

This one is a 3/5⭐️ for me. It’s not my usual genre but it did keep my interest and freak me out a little bit at the same time.

While reading it, we quite enjoyed how graphic it is - definetly expect blood and gore (maybe not ideal before bedtime 😅). Though the cast of characters was quite interesting, we wished that they would have showed more depth but that might develop more in the books to follow! But the story was gripping overall, and how all the different plot lines wove together in the end made it a very enjoyable and exciting read and left us thinking what we would do when the apocalypse arrives…

Synopsis
On June 21st, 2020 civilisation will fall and the dead will rise. Northwest Indiana will become ground zero for the zombie plague. Within twenty-four hours, Chicago will be nothing more than a breeding ground for the undead. Loved how gritty and gory this book was without distracting from a great story. Loved the main characters and how they came round in a circle with an unexpected twist. Can’t wait to read the next book in this series as if it’s as good as this one I’m genuinely going to love it. Only missed out on being a 5 🌟 book due to a few characters that were probably not needed and they irritated me. Looking forward to the next zombie fix by this author

I loved this book. It kept me gripped from the beginning. It had a lot of characters in it, all with different background stories, but they were cleverly written to give a smooth read. At times it was emotional and scary and really dragged me in. The setting was just an average neighbourhood which, for me, made it scarier as it was more relatable and kept making me wonder what I would do in a zombie apocalypse!

This book was ok. Zombies, trying to survive, flu "cure " that accidentally turns you to zombies. We get some flash back scenes to see how characters connect but you really get no good back stories. I personally had a hard time getting into the book and characters. I think there were too many characters and not enough story on them and that took away from connecting with them.

This story is a long one, but a good one. You come to care for the characters in the story. I love the action and the suspense. There are some really good twist and turns and just when you think things are going to calm for the characters the author throws a surprise. If you like a good zombie action story this one is for you.

Wow! This book had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't put it down even though the book had my hair standing straight out of my head. Great characters, good and bad. Of course I finished it late at night which is going to give me nightmares. Excellent book to read, but read it during the day!

Quite good.

Quite a good plot and action. I struggled to care enough about the characters to worry whether they lived or died , though. It was unfortunate as it would have made it a more enjoyable read. Not the worst zombie book I've read, but nowhere near the best.
