Saneatsu Mushanokoji nació el 12 de mayo de 1885 en Tokio, en el seno de una familia noble que contaba entre sus antepasados con ilustres poetas, políticos e intelectuales. Su primera vocación fue la política, pero el descubrimiento de Lev Tolstói a los dieciocho años le causó tal impresión que decidió dedicarse a la literatura. En 1906 comenzó a estudiar Literatura Inglesa en la prestigiosa Universidad Imperial de Tokio, donde recibió clases del escritor Natsume Soseki, de quien siempre se consideró discípulo. Aunque Mushanokoji terminó por abandonar los estudios, continuó su estrecha relación con sus compañeros, con quienes fundó en 1910 la revista Shirakaba (‘Abedul blanco’), vehículo de difusión de una nueva corriente literaria del mismo nombre. En 1918, Mushanokoji participó en la creación de los «Nuevos pueblos» en la provincia de Miyazaki, una comuna inspirada en los ideales sociales de Tolstói, en la que vivió hasta 1925. Fue el presidente de la sección teatral de la Asociación Patriótica Literaria Japonesa, un organismo creado en 1942. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial se vio obligado a renunciar a su escaño en la Cámara Alta de la Dieta japonesa. En 1951 recibió la Orden de la Cultura, un galardón que distingue una carrera relevante en el terreno de la literatura o de las artes. Falleció el 9 de abril de 1976. Novelista, autor teatral, poeta, artista y filósofo, su obra se caracteriza por un profundo humanismo. Amistad, publicada en 1919, es la primera obra de Saneatsu Mushanokoji que se edita en España. Se incluye en esta edición como posfacio «Mushanokoji y yo», un relato de Naoya Shiga, autor también inédito en nuestro país, en el que este da testimonio de la larga amistad que unió a los dos escritores.

"Desde que he llegado a París, he pensado muchas cosas. Pienso que no nos sobra tiempo para emborracharnos de amor. Hay demasiadas cosas que queremos y debemos hacer."

Seguro que con 16 o 17 años hubiera saboreado más y mejor este triángulo amoroso. En cualquier caso, celebro que nos sigan llegando obras de autores menos conocidos.

love triangle but one of the men is just obsessed with a high school girl & she likes his best friend who is less creepy (shocker). I HATED THIS THROUGHLY. the second part with the letters was an interesting way to out yourself to your best friend who proposed to the girl THREE TIMES that you are, in fact, also in love with the same girl and will be marrying her. but he’s also defending his actions by saying it’s “fate” and the work of “God”. GOD WOULD NOT DO THIS. if this is friendship i don’t want it. i guess it has some good discussions about prioritising the happiness of yourself v others (hence the title). a big influence throughout is the author’s belief in fate and God, that isn’t necessarily related to a specific religion, but rather seen as a higher deity in control of their fate. do you truly have control over yourself and what is thrown at you? can you control feelings?
even if I read this 100 years ago when it was published, I would still find it creepy.

Esta novela se lee de forma rápida, no sólo por la brevedad, sino por la ligereza de los diálogos, porque quieres saber qué ocurrirá finalmente con este trío que no quiere serlo (y que, no nos olvidemos que estamos en el Japón de inicios del siglo XX, tampoco avanzará demasiado ni en modernez ni -mucho menos- en erotismo), y, sobre todo, cómo impactará en esa amistad tan sincera, profunda y afectuosa entre Nojima y Omiya que ambos se sientan enamorados de la misma mujer...

The writing is beautiful.
I wonder why the protagonist think the future of marriage with a woman who he never said “I love you” and he never dated.
Also, it’s weird his friend is hesitate to show love to the woman for the protagonist because the woman
and the protagonist are not lover.
I feel that is quite old Japanese culture which woman is treated as someone’s possession.

Me costó algo entrar en esta historia, narrada con un lenguaje demasiado formal para mí gusto. Siempre termino pensando que es cosa de la traducción, o no... Luego lo leí como quién lee un interesante ensayo sobre las costumbres japonesas relacionadas con el matrimonio.

I first have to say that I read a not very good Spanish translation of this book (quite bad, I would say), even though I understand Japanese. The book is quite interesting, though, even if a little bit old-fashioned or/and naive in parts. The story of friendship and love is quite charming, and the characters are quite fleshed out, even if, as in many of these novels, they come from a world of education and riches. Nojima is an interesting enough protagonist. Recommended. 7,5.
