Analyzes the American food system, discusses the adverse effect technology has had on American agriculture, and looks at world hunger, eating disorders, and food advertising
This was a very good, if not dated, book about Big Food's influence on what we eat.
I enjoyed it almost to the very end when Silverstein concluded that we should resort to a socialist system. Although I strongly disagree with his conclusion, despite the evidence put forth throughout his book, I respect his right to express his opinion. (See what I did there?) Yes, capitalist ideologies have created a monster within our food supply chain. However, relying on government to think for us is not, and never should be, the answer. Suggesting that the United States should socialize its food supply is the same as suggesting that consumers are all victims and unable to think for themselves. I am a former junk food addict. But I made the decision for myself that I no longer wanted to live that way. This book was part of an attempt to education myself regarding the deception and misrepresentations the food industry employs. On that front, this book is very successful.

though written 20 years ago, great info about the us food industry and how food that is bad for us also has lots of literal, environmental, and emotional costs.
