Setting Hearts on Fire: A Guide to Giving Evangelistic Talks

Rate this book
In this book, which is the fruit of his 40 years experience as an evangelist, John Chapman passes on the skills of his craft. He explains how telling people the gospel of Jesus Christ requires us to be servants : servants of the Word itself (to understand it accurately), and servants of the people (to explain it clearly).

Solid, if unspectacular, guideline for talk writing. Would recommend as a great resource to anyone preparing to give a talk for the first time, or entering into their first year of ministry.

A really good book for preachers, youth leaders and Sunday school teachers…it leans towards sermon structure but the advice is transferable.

There are several ‘talk’s’ written out at the end of the book as Appendices, which is also really useful.

I don’t think this is a ‘if you buy only one book on preaching’ book but as part of a collection it’s excellent.

Timothy Keller’s ‘Preaching’ is also a good partner book with this.

A really practically helpful book about preaching. I felt some parts were unnecessary but overall very helpful for beginners.

Really clear reminder of the need to keep biblical truth central whilst being able to communicate to win your audience.

This was my first introduction to Chappo and I was completely wowed. Part 1 was underwhelming but part 2 was immensely helpful and the appendices blew me away. So much to learn from and be moved/inspired/challenged by here.

This is a solid book that delivers on its aim to show, step by step, how to prepare and deliver a talk that shares and clearly explains the gospel of Christ. Intensely practical, it contains both reasons of why sharing the gospel is important, and structure and strategies of how to do it well. It does not pretend to give the only format to deliver a successful talk, but utilises the author’s experience and style to teach one way of getting above average results in doing so.
