The Foundations of Bioethics

Rate this book
The Foundations of Bioethics challenges the values of much of contemporary bioethics and health care policy by confronting their failure to secure the moral norms they seek to apply. The nature of health and disease, the definition of death, the morality of abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, physician-assisted suicide, germline genetic engineering, triage decisions and distributive justice in health care are all addressed within an integrated reconsideration of bioethics as a whole.

An attempt to clarify what kinds of bioethical principles can be agreed upon in secular society -- but it gives away so much that I feel like it's not terribly useful.

Acutally, I just finished reading the first edition of this book (1986). The second edition (1996) is apparently better. Engelhardt re-wrote most of the chapters, so it might be instructional to look at the 2nd edition.

I read both the first edition and the second edition. They really shouldn't be called "editions" as they are two different books. The formatting is the same, and Chapter 5 is the same, but Engelhardt had a spiritual and philosophical change of mind between the two books.
