This is a picture book of animals that helps you count. A part of the animal(s) makes the number you are counting to. For example, number one is a lion and in the shape of a one and so on. This book counts to ten and is a great beginner book for any child learning to count/read. At the end of the book is all fifty five animals together in one illustrations. The illustrations are bright and colorful for anyone reading the book. This would be a great lesson for pre-k/kindergarten teachers to use as a fun way to count numbers. This beginning book should be used younger ages and/or grades as there are very few words in the book, with mainly illustrations that depict the animals.
When Sean was a preschooler, one of his favorite authors was Matthew Van Fleet. He adored Fuzzy Yellow Ducklings and Tails. Recently at the library I spotted a Van Fleet book we hadn't read that I thought Harriet would enjoy: One Yellow Lion. I was right; she loved the book!
One Yellow Lion is a counting book that mixes colors, numbers and animals together just as Fuzzy Yellow Ducklings does with shapes. Van Fleet's books incorporate a lift the flat piece into every page. In One Yellow Lion the flat opens to reveal the number being part of the hidden animal. For instance, the yellow one is the lion cub's tail, thus "one yellow lion."
The flaps are fun. This might be worth buying. There are many color and counting books out there, but what makes this one special is the long fold out flap on the last page where you have to look for the animals.
