The Devil You Know is the third book in Victoria Vane’s The Devil DeVere series, and once again we’re returned to Georgian England where the wealthy enjoy lives of power, privilege, and sexual indulgence. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the series, A Wild Night's Bride and The Virgin Huntress, but oh, how I loved this story!!!

In The Devil You Know we go back in time, and get a front row seat, as Viscount Ludovic “The Devil” DeVere is first introduced to the very respectable, very married, Baroness Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley. DeVere however, is not respectable and Diana’s wedded status doesn’t stop him from pressing his… ‘interest’… when the opportunity arises.

From his very first words in A Wild Night's Bride I’ve quite enjoyed Vic. His wit and devil-may-care attitude toward life made him rakish and charming, and his title and wealth made him the bachelor to land. However, I've had nothing more than luke warm feelings about Diana, but after reading this book, I can now say, without hesitation, that that has changed. Not only do I no longer merely “quite enjoy” Vic, I adore him! And Diana... well, she has become a heroine I’m wholeheartedly cheering for! I love their sexual tension, their heated banter, and all the other ways they heat up the pages, too, and I’m soooo looking forward to the next book, The Devil's Match!

My thanks to Breathless Press for providing me with a copy of this book for review.

Lady Diana Palmerston-Wriothesely is a beautiful and respectable lady. Her world comes apart when she discovers a sordid secret about her husband, which will shatter her facade and drive her right in the arms of the devil himself DeVere.

Diana
Photobucket

Lord Ludovic DeVere, is a charming and a sexy rogue, that's use to getting what he wants on a whim. He's the devil in disguise and will stop at nothing to get his wicked ways with Diana. This is where the fun and games begin.

Ludovic DeVere
devere-3

The sexual tension between DeVere and Diana is off the charts and Victoria does a great job in feeding us just enough, to make us salivate for more. My favorite quote:

She wanted him too. He could see it in the rapid rise of her breasts. He could smell her budding arousal and would relish bringing her to full bloom. God, how he loved this dance! She had taken the first tentative steps, yet she still fought her desire, refused to give in to it, but he would lead her now. He was a master…and a ruthless bastard.”

The writing is fabulous and deliciously sinful. This is a keeper and a winner. 5 huge stars!

Loved it! In THE DEVIL YOU KNOW (book 3 of The Devil DeVere series) the plot thickens, the heat is turned way up, and --oh boy-- do the games begin. What a great spicy historical romance series!!

THE DEVIL YOU KNOW is also part 1 of a 2-part story featuring Viscount Ludovic, aka ‘The Devil DeVere’ and Lady Diana Palmerson-Wriotesley. (Book 4, THE DEVILS MATCH, is the conclusion to their extremely HOT and passionate romance.)

In this book we go back four years in time to learn how DeVere and Diana met, and exactly what transpired between them. As we learn in books 1 & 2, DeVere and Diana have a history and are practically enemies, but we don’t know what led up to their estrangement from each other. There is some mystery around her dead husband, and rumors that DeVere and Diana might have been lovers, and this book reveals all.

When I finished this book, I immediately started reading the next book. I couldn’t put it down until I was through. What happens between DeVere and Diana in this book was so unexpected for me. The DeVere we met in book 1 & 2 appeared to be quite shallow of character, devoid of morals, and lacking respect for anyone but himself and a few friends. Boy, was I wrong. The DeVere we meet in THE DEVIL YOU KNOW made me see a completely different side to him. I finally understood why a woman of character like Lady Diana could find herself irresistibly drawn to him.

But this is only the beginning of their story. THE DEVILS MATCH takes us back to ‘present time’ for the series, and is where DeVere wins his Diana back. Sigh

5 Devilishly Delightful Stars!! Victoria Vane does it again; she’s three books strong into this series, and I can’t get enough!

In the first two books in the series Ludovic DeVere had a hand in orchestrating the pairing of the couples that were featured. This time he’s in the spotlight, the story takes us back in time and we learn what led him to lead to his wicked ways. At this point his best friend Ned, is blissfully married to Annalee and they are expecting their second child. Her cousin Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley accompanies them on a visit to DeVere’s estate. Little does Diana know that her host will light a fire within her that will burn long after she leaves Woodcote Park.

I was surprised by some of the turn of events, particularly those relating to Diana’s husband, Reggie. One would have believed that the circumstances were different, as was implicated in the previous book, but now we know what brought about his untimely demise. It caught me off guard.

DeVere is the “Rico Suave” of his time. He’s charming, shrewd, debauched and quite honorable when need be, although the thought of that makes him cringe! He’s also shamelessly amusing and more than once his thoughts and words had me laughing out loud.

“Should you later grow chilly, dear lady, you need only whisper the word, and I shall command every hearth in this monstrosity be lit. I would rather set my entire house aflame than cover such a magnificent…” His gaze raked over Diana’s bosom with an appreciative gleam. “… gown.”

Always looking out for everyone’s well-being *snicker*! Ludovic is reminiscent of one of my favorite characters, Matthew Wallingford of Sinful, yet he is UNIQUELY DeVere!

Victoria Vane’s writing is like the finest of chocolates. It melts in your mouth, it consumes you as you enjoy its sinful decadence, and long after it’s gone it stays with you. Just delicious!! The Devil You Know is beautifully written and depicts the Georgian time period both in setting and superbly crafted words, which is fast becoming the author’s trademark. The intimacy that ensues between DeVere and Diana left me breathless; it’s naughty, sexy and passionate. The book is also filled with witty dialogue, and although this is a novella, it’s a substantial story. The ending leads us and teases us right into the next book. I can hardly wait!!

One night in his bed, and she was forever changed.

Just finished a re-read and it's still an awesome read. Ludovic and Diana have become one of my favorite couples. ...2/20/2013

What an incredible job Ms. Vane has done in giving us the beginning of Ludovic and Diana’s story. The surprising revelations along with Diana’s discoveries held me completely captive. I wasn’t expecting any of it. When you add the combustible chemistry and the smoldering, passionate love scenes, it makes for a near perfect read!

This is the third installment in Victoria Vane’s breathtaking series, The Devil DeVere. While I loved the first two books, I have been anxiously waiting to get here. Getting to know Ludovic and Diana better has endeared them more and has me tied up in knots wanting to ensure they get a HEA!

For the first time, I glimpsed a part of Ludovic not seen before, and it was thrilling! He’s a complex character and finally has met a woman who does so much more than stir his desire. It appears Diana is not the only one “forever changed.”

The deception and threats that are involved left me angry, frustrated and anxious to get to the next installment, The Devil’s Match!

While this is a novella, it is filled with everything needed for a fantastic read! The author has written these novellas explicitly to be read in order. But be forewarned, once started, you will not want to stop until all have been devoured!

The Devil You Know takes you back 4 years in time and explains a lot of unanswered questions that I had during the Virgin Huntress book 2.

We got much MORE of Lord Ludovic DeVere and let me tell you, he is one SEXY character.

Gosh, I have a headache and cannot write a decent review right now for the life of me. All's I can say is if you LOVE your historical romances very wicked and with scorching love scenes along with a hero you wish you had in your bed. Add in a fantastic story line and that's exactly what I got in every book in this series so far. I ask you, what are you waiting for? If you have not read this series, head right on over to Amazon now and get clicking :-)

I'm glad that August 24 is just a few day's away and then I'll be able to continue on reading book 4, The Devil's Match.

★★★★★ (This is a review of the audiobook.) Eva Hathaway is a new to me narrator, and I must admit I had to get used to her reading. Nevertheless, once I did, I quite enjoyed her. She certainly improved – or I adapted – as this delightful story moved along at a brisk pace. Her “S” letters have a strong “sssss” sound, giving some of them a bit of a whistle, but it isn’t too bad. (Better than a hiss, certainly.) It was something I didn’t even notice by the middle of the book; I wouldn’t be opposed to listening to her again.

Ms. Hathaway did a nice job differentiating the characters; this was probably due more to her getting the characters’ personality right in her mind. An audiobook is always more enjoyable when you can tell the narrator is enjoying the story as much as you are, and understands the characters.

Victoria Vane has given us a witty novel set in Georgian England and she does an excellent job of transcribing an era that was elegant and more extravagant; a time when maneuverings and manipulations of romantic liaisons were deemed necessary in order to alleviate the boredom of the idle rich.

I really got caught up in the story. It just flowed by so quickly, yet the dialogues sounded very much of that era, without having any Purple Prose. Quite a trick, that, considering it was known for an emergence of Romantic poets. Ms. Vane has a distinctive narrative voice that is pitch-perfect for her settings; evocative, atmospheric, and fun.

What can I say about the Viscount Ludovic, AKA ‘The Devil DeVere’? I shouldn’t like him, or adore him, let alone fall for his wit and charm any more than the proper Lady Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley. However, despite his taunting arrogance and manipulations, he doesn’t resort to mendacity; you are assured, deep in his core, he is a nice person.

I’m not big on adultery, but Ludovic is a product of his times; still, he manages to rise above the common libertine. He is both vivid and true to life. I even forgave him when he jumped to a conclusion about the heroine – whom I also liked – near the end of the book, and I don't think I would do that with any other.

I can’t recommend this novel enough; it was wonderful! I look forward to listening to the rest of this series.

P.S. I recommend you have the next one ready to listen to – or read – as this is a story in two parts! The rest of the series is coming out on audio soon, not all by the same reader.
I received this audiobook from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

THE WAITING IS OVER! THE DELICIOUSLY WICKED, DECIDEDLY DEVIOUS, DEVIL-IN-DIGUISE, VISCOUNT LUDOVIC DEVERE FINALLY GETS HIS OWN STORY

It was so obvious in The Virgin Huntress that DeVere and Diana shared a previous history together and I couldn’t wait to find out exactly what had transpired between them to cause such tension. As soon as I started reading The Devil You Know I found myself totally engrossed and just couldn’t put it down until I got to the last page. It far exceeded my expectations.

There were so many things I loved about this novella:-

Setting

It is so refreshing to have a story set in the Georgian era and Ms Vane really brought the period to life for me with her remarkable attention to historical detail. How original as well to have Epsom and horse-racing as the setting against which the story plays out. I applaud Ms Vane for avoiding those crowded ballrooms and teeming parks of London.

Story

SPOILER FREE

Set four years before A Wild Night’s Bride, it is a compelling and darkly erotic tale of secrets, jealousy, blackmail, mystery, intrigue, passion and desire.

Writing

Ms Vane has a style that makes everything she writes immensely readable. Her dialogue is sharp and witty and she has a wonderful descriptive flair .

Viscount Ludovic DeVere

We’ve come to see DeVere as an arrogant, ruthless, unpredictable, manipulative rogue who has no qualms about exploiting people for his own purposes. Finally, we get to know a little more about the man. He’s shrewd with his own code of honour and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Most surprising is his willingness to protect Diana and secure her future. It’s obvious she means more to him than he cares to admit and so I hated him for what he said to her and made her believe at the end of the story.

Baroness Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley

I felt I could really relate to Diana. Her marriage is a mockery and she feels unfulfilled and undesirable. So it’s no wonder she’s susceptible to DeVere’s dangerous charm. She sees no harm in a little flirtation but she certainly doesn’t intend to be another notch on his bedpost. But it doesn’t stop her wondering what it would be like a have such a man as a lover and having the most erotic dreams about him. It is only when events take an unexpected turn and Diana desperately needs affirmation that she is a desirable woman that she falls into DeVere’s arms. I really felt her anger and pain when he walks away and can’t wait for him to get his devil’s horns well and truly clipped by Diana in The Devil’s Match.

Those ‘X’ Rated Moments

Ms Vane certainly knows how to maintain sizzling sexual tension between DeVere and Diana. What can I say about the love scenes? HOLY SMOKE! HOT! HOT! HOT! Pass the smelling salts!!!

Secondary Characters

I’m not sure who I hated the most Diana’s detestable husband, Reggie, or DeVere’s jealous, vindictive mistress, Caroline, Duchess of Beauclerc. It was quite sad seeing Sir Edward Chambers and his pregnant wife Annalee so happy together knowing what was going to happen. DeVere’s younger brother, Hew, also makes an appearance.

I’ll finish with one of my favourite quotes:

”You think Diana would come to your bed?” Ned threw his head back and laughed. “You’re mad! First of all, she would never break her marriage vows. Secondly, she’s certainly deduced by now what a whoremonger you are. She wouldn’t touch you with gloves, my friend.”

VERDICT: A DEFINITE KEEPER

RATING: ★★★★★

The Devil You Know is the third novella in Victoria Vane’s sumptuous The Devil DeVere series and the first of a two part story about Viscount Ludovic DeVere. The second part and final novella in the series, The Devil’s Match, will be published on 24 August.

My thanks to the Victoria Vane for kindly providing me with a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review

Diana and Ludovic. Story ends on a cliffhanger and one has to buy the the next book to get more of the story. Meh. In a novella especially it is not fun to read about the hero having sex with his mistress while he is pretending she is the heroine. A story needs more depth to pull that off. Note to self: DO NOT BUY and more books/novellas from this author.

Lady Diana has resigned herself to her loveless, unhappy marriage with her gamble happy husband but even she is unaware how deep the debt has gotten and is shocked to learn they are about to be ruined. It becomes worse when she becomes aware who has bought up the vowels--the man that makes her blood race in the most inappropriate ways, the devilish Viscount Ludovic DeVere. Upon their first meeting the attraction just zings but Diana is a proper lady and refuses to break her marriage vows. But with DeVere sending her smoldering glances and whisper soft touches, it does not take long for her defenses to crumble. But they truly break down when one last shocking act of betrayal from husband sets her free. Just as this passionate couple find a moment of bliss together, life throws a most damaging curveball that forces Diana and DeVere to part on bad terms with no hopes for a reconciliation in the future. . .

Oh, my! If you have read the previous novellas (A Wild Night's Bride and The Virgin Huntress) you have just sensed the tension boiling between Diana and DeVere and I loved how this novella goes back a few years and shows the whole history and what happened to have such apparent loathing, especially on Diana's part. All Diana longed for was happiness and she got the short end of the stick with her husband and his unappreciated actions in the bedroom. Diana has never known true desire and DeVere awakens that in her and she thinks she can finally be happy--even if it means being on the outskirts of the ton. But Diana is unaware of the turmoil that DeVere also faces in his personal life and he does what he thinks is best to protect her, even if it costs him the first true peace he has felt. DeVere is wickedly charming, dashing and sexy and certainly knows how to make Diana appreciate the finer acts in the bedroom and is the perfect man to awaken all her senses. Even though I didn't like seeing him with his mistress, it added to his nature he portrays and it also made me appreciate him a bit more for his sacrifice for Diana's happiness. With this delicious yet sad background story having been told now, I am so eager to see how Victoria Vane delivers a happily-ever-after for this couple! Once again, the Georgian writing and attention to detail is fabulous and the humor and heat is high but I enjoyed the added bit on angst this story brought. This novella is guaranteed to make your toes curl and your heart sigh with romance and sadness and I am eager to see how this fabulous series finish's out! 4 1/2 stars

I'm making really high-pitch girly noises right now.
Why, you may ask?
Because the Devil DeVere series just keeps getting better and better!

I'm going to try my best to write this review without giving away any spoilers from the two previous Devil DeVere books. I will say that if you haven't read them:
1. You are missing out
2. You're not going to feel as emotionally attached to the characters

We first hear of Lady Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley in A Wild Night's Bride, though merely in a passing conversation between Ned and the Viscount DeVere you get an idea things are a bit more complicated between the Viscount and Diana.

In The Virgin Huntress Diana's character is expanded upon as Vesta's surrogate mother/companion. While doing her duty as chaperone to her willful charge she is thrust into the company of the Viscount where plenty of questions arise about their relationship. Why does Diana dislike him so much? Is it merely because of his status as a rake or is it something more personal?

WELL! Venture back 5 years with me in The Devil You Know where we meet a still married Diana who is visiting one of the Viscount's estates with her cousin Annalise and her husband Ned. She's been living the last ten years married to a man that makes her feel unwanted, unloved, and undesirable. When the Viscount makes her feel all of those things with a simple glance, she knows she's in trouble.

The Devil DeVere series is like a juicy soap opera I can't seem to turn off! It has love, lust, murder, suicide, and a mystery just waiting to be solved. I can't wait for the conclusion of Diana and Viscount Ludovic DeVere's story when we travel back to 1783 in The Devil's Match.

And here we get to the meat of this mini-series. The man I waited for...Ludovic DeVere! This book wasn't nearly as lighthearted as the precious two...though the steam factor was turned up a notch!

I actually love how the author has laid out the time line for this series. During books one and two, we get little snippets of DeVere and a Diana...you know there is a tension there, and it builds little bits at a time. During book two, it is much more obvious, and Diana is so cold. She seems as if she's completely opposite of DeVere. He is unapologetic-ally lascivious. He literally revels in sin and wickedness. Diana, while not particularly stuffy, seems fairly straight laced and...well...normal!

And here we are, getting that background on these two. Though I expected there to have been something sexual, I didn't expect the emotions. You mean to tell me, Ms. Vane, that Ludovic has some vulnerabilities? Some tenderness buried under all of that outer playboy? Though I suppose tenderness isn't exactly the right word for it, I was really surprised to find that Ludovic has emotions.

So it's as if this portion of their lives has had the door closed on it. I felt, as a reader, that I got the entire story. That part of their life is finished. They are no longer the same people. Thank goodness they still have another 140 pages or so in order to fall into each others arms!

I am so very, very glad that I noticed this book showing up on my feed from multiple friends. So many little gems get easily overlooked, and I'm lucky that this wasn't one of those for me. I snatched it up and am hopelessly addicted!! I'm moving on to finish Diana and DeVere's refreshingly potent love story.

Surrender to DeVere!

I'm loving to have the chance to follow this series while it's still being written. I just heard that Victoria Vane (AKA Emery Lee) might be adding 2 more novellas and a spin off! It's so exciting to see it grow book by book. I'm getting addicted to Victoria's writing, it's like a drug.

This third chapter of The Devil DeVere series is a prequel that begs to be told and is imperative to understand the next title. But if it's a prequel, why put it in the middle of the series?

The author made it so this part would be out of context if it would be placed as the first book, so we shouldn't call it a prequel.
The Devil You Know is better described as an episode that will fill us in a story that the main characters wouldn't be able to fully explain or revisit during The Devil's Match. It would be long, might affect the pacing drastically plus we wouldn't have the chance to meet (and relate to) most of the characters that were involved (and fundamental), unless both titles could be told as a full length novel.

It leaves us anticipating the conclusion, but I'm restricted to what I can reveal without spoiling the book for you. I expect a supreme ending for this arc. Her twists are unpredictable and now we got the chance to really comprehend the second part that will follow next. A real treat for DeVere's fans!

Now if you'll excuse me, after discovering some of their secrets, I must go read again the previous two books - and you should too!

Once again, Victoria Vane magically transports the reader back into Georgian England. Her ear for dialogue is simply faultless. And while Viscount DeVere has been a fascinating presence in the previous two installments, this time he is the Star. And what a delicious bad boy he is! Lady Diana doesn't stand a chance against him. And although they part as enemies at the end, I can't wait for the final chapter, when these two will no doubt find their way back into one another's arms.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention (how could I?) that DeVere and Diana burn up the sheets, and your Kindle may start smoking.

Loved it. Loved the dirty drama, the conniving baddies and absolutely loved the scorchingly hot sex scenes.

Now I understand why Ludovic DeVere needs 2 books for his stories to be told.

I'm off to book #4, so excited for the falling of a debaucher.

Oh yes, its quite obvious this series is headed into the homestretch as this story both answered and created a lot of mystery in the main story thread that has been tying the series together. It is book three in the series, but chronologically it falls before book one because it takes the story back to the time hinted at in the first two books when the reader is given broad hints of a past history between DeVere and Diana involving the death of her husband and a clandestine passionate interlude. It tantalized me for so long and here, in this book, I finally got to the bottom of it.

In this installment, there is first the usual prologue, but this one is about a younger DeVere. The short piece is a splendid revelation into the making of the older, jaded version of DeVere. Then fast forward a few years. Diana, Edward, and Amalee (yes, sweet Amalee is alive and a delight to know in this her swan song story) are en route to enjoy the hospitality of Edward's friend Lord DeVere during the race meet. Diana's husband has gone on ahead of them with the race horse from their stable and her own mare that they are hoping to entice someone to use for stud. Diana has time to reflect on the reasons for her husband's absences from her side and is not blind to her empty marriage particularly when she has the evidence before her eyes of a loving marriage between her cousin and her husband.

On arrival, Diana is surprised by the appearance of DeVere and highly aroused though she pretends not to be by his immediate interest in her as a woman. But other matters start to distract her when she discovers that her husband never arrived though the horses and grooms did and when she discovers that a sour jealous woman who currently warms DeVere's bed looks on her as a rival. DeVere himself gets bolder with his interest and invitations, but she resists.

Even while DeVere plots to have the enticing Diana in his bed, he is busy trying to pluck her worthless husband out of trouble at a gaming party hosted by DeVere's shady neighbor at the same time that he must give Caroline, his current fling, her conge. Caroline proves tenacious and doesn't plan to be turned aside.

And the plot just keeps on getting better when murder, blackmail, usury, dark secrets, and betrayal become part of the game. I don't wish to spoil it for anyone so I'll stay silent about the details regarding all that. Suffice to say, it was an engrossing plot that was full of excitement and intrigue.

Now the part of the plot I will speak to is Ludovic and Diana's passionate affair. There is much tension while she keeps herself under restraint, but when a terrible secret is revealed it gives her the impetus to go with her desires for once. Their passion is five alarm fire hot. Though he holds a vast deal of experience and she very little, it is these refreshing differences that serve to give them both the most pleasure. Somehow, in the process of sating their physical needs, they both discover a deeper connection and contentment together. It was one of those horrid moments when I realized that it wasn't going to be enough because of the jealousy and greed of another. I was warmed to know the truth and was sad that Ludovic had to keep the truth from Diana and let her think the worst of him to protect her.

So what with the strong regrets for what couldn't be between DeVere and Diana and with the unsolved mystery of the murder (yes, it remained unsolved though everyone was pointing fingers), I am dying to read the next installment. I love how the story arc of DeVere and Diana in this series just keeps getting drawn taunter and tighter so that I am left in anticipating and wanting more.

I recommend this novella, which should be read in order for optimum enjoyment, for those who love their historical romance on the erotic side.

A deliciously shocking addition to the DeVere Series that was jam packed full of jaw dropping surprises. This is the third book in the Devil DeVere Series (the series MUST be read in order) and it clarified many questions that lingered of past relations with Diana and DeVere from the others in the series. We also got to know more of what made our devilish DeVere who he’s reputed to be and some of the why(s). It was a great experience to have the guarded DeVere open to us all. I'm loving him more and more as the series goes on!

Diana is a married woman and not by choice. It was arranged by her parents and followed through to tie her to their lands and fortunes. She’s been miserable ever since. One would think after being married to a person for a decade they would truly know the person. Diana shockingly found out many long kept secrets that her husband has kept guarded. Those secrets answered many questions and brought forth much treachery, deceit and loss. Diana goes to the only person she feels can help her in this situation, DeVere. Will she regret the decision she has made to go to him for help or will all fall into place as planned?

DeVere is the devil in disguise. He’s a tasty specimen of a man and has many indulgences. But when Diana approaches him with a request of help; he’s not only ready willing and able. He has a very strong attraction and desire to have Diana in his grasp and as his.

There are two characters’ I feel I must vent about. They both should truly hold the name of the devil for they make DeVere look like an absolute saint! I disliked Caroline from her introduction into the book. She’s very manipulative, deceitful, cruel and just all around a horrible person. Then there’s Reggie, Diana’s husband. What a waste of a man. He’s a lying, cheating, abusive sack of crap and I was thrilled he received his just deserts ;)

There’s something about romantic historical that brings a different feel of sensuality forth. I think it may be the dialogue that is used. It's very different from what we hear every day. It brings about a thrill of anticipation when the dialogue is written out with the accompanying actions. It's a different kind of HOT that anyone that enjoys historical and romance can appreciate. I'm excited to see where Victoria takes us next!

Next book, please :)

Oh, my, my, my. Viscount Ludovic DeVere has played a vital role in the first two novellas as a "matchmaker". He was a very interesting character and I was somewhat surprised that Diana and he had something in the past. Before this, I would never have thought of this coupling but The Virgin Huntress hinted at that and The Devil You Know revealed the events that happened four years ago.

On the surface, DeVere gave off a very nonchalant, confident, devil-may-care and I-live-by-my-own-codes attitude but this book showed us a glimpse of the lonely DeVere. He actually really cared for Diana and felt something he never felt before when with other women.

I'm really glad that our heroine is Diana as I absolutely adore her. She was a fiery, fierce and strong character and the perfect match for The Devil DeVere. The Devil has finally met his match but alas, it was short-lived. The effing duchess ruined everything.

Gah! I wanted to strangle the duchess. She was a true b****. I hate her with my whole being. It was a heartbreak and I almost teared up when DeVere presented Diana with his parting gift. I won't say more because I don't want to spoil the story. It was really saddddddddd after that because this scene actually revealed how DeVere actually felt for Diana.

I feel blessed and fortunate to have gotten my hands on this book earlier. A BIG THANK YOU to Victoria Vane for this lovely ARC. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I was so ecstatic over it and now it's torture to have to wait for The Devil's Match. I comfort myself that I just have to wait a month for it and not a year.

I had the pleasure of reading this book before its release date! I loved the first two books in this series, and the third definitely does not disappoint. It’s a bit more graphic than the first two, but Victoria makes it work in very fine style!
What I love most about this series, and this book in particular, is that it is capable of standing alone without the hot and steamy scenes. It doesn’t happen too often that an ‘erotica’ storyline could stand on its own two feet without the erotica, but that is exactly what Victoria has done. And she’s done a damned fine job of it!
I love Diana. She’s strong without being too domineering and while she’s vulnerable, she isn’t a sniveling twit. And DeVere? Wow! There are times when you’re ready to hate him, then you see what his thought process and you realize it is spot on and deep down, he really does have a heart. A heart he’s trying very much to protect.
I look forward, with great anticipation to the next book in this series! Thank you Victoria, for sweeping us away!

I received a review copy in exchange for my honest review from Ms. Vane.

Another deliciously sinful read from Ms. Vane! I have made quick work of reading through the Devil Devere series, unable to put my Kindle down unless it was to turn my air conditioner up because, Lord have mercy, this series is SPICY.

I enjoyed being able to read about Vesta's mother, Annalee, and how much in love she and Edward were. It was also enjoyable to read about Diana before she lost her husband, who definitely didn't deserve her, and of course Lud DeVere. Even though he's deliciously bad, you just can't help but love him!

I was confused by this one only because it seems like it should have been first, not third. Hopefully the next book will explain about "present-day" Diana and Lud. I've absolutely LOVED getting to know the characters, and Ms. Vane as well!

If you like a scintillating novel rich with vivid love scenes and history, you definitely need to pick up this series!

We first met Viscount Ludovic DeVere in A WILD NIGHT'S BRIDE when he talked his pal, Ned Chambers and Phoebe Scott into a dare that results in them waking up in the King's bed. Then we followed his naughty influence on the incorrigible Vesta Chambers when he assists her in her plan to kidnap his own brother, Hew DeVere so that she may seduce him in THE VIRGIN HUNTRESS. All the while, we get hints that the Lady Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley - cousin to Ned's first wife, Annalee and godmother to Vesta - has a past that connects her to Ludovic DeVere in a way that makes their blood boil whenever they are placed in the same room together.

In THE DEVIL YOU KNOW by Victoria Vane we get the backstory of the steamy past that connects Lady Diana to the Devil DeVere. We learn that Ludovic is not totally immune to the emotional charms of a woman. We learn the reasons he holds women in such low esteem but enjoys them as his greatest pleasure. We also get hints of a darker side, of secrets he keeps even from his own brother and his undisclosed covet of his dearest friend Ned's loving marriage.

Ludovic DeVere is a man of means, a man of passion, and a man who can raise desire in any woman he sets his sights on. He carries a less than proper reputation but is, in fact, a loyal and caring friend to anyone who cares enough to call him friend. In THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, we get to know the Devil Himself and discover that his heart may not be as immune to love as we have been led to believe. This segment of the series, however, is not complete in its story-telling but rather a connector story that will help to tie all four novellas, that make up the Devil DeVere series, together. There is no happily-ever-after for DeVere or Diana in THE DEVIL YOU KNOW but rather a stay tuned for the conclusion ending yet to come in the final novella - THE DEVIL'S MATCH.

Victoria Vane writes her stories with a hint of reality floating beneath the surface of the backstory. Her tidbits included at the end of the novellas gives us an insight into the story behind the story which help bring her extraordinary characters to life. THE DEVIL YOU KNOW is the story behind the other stories. It's the answers to questions that have been plaguing us about the Viscount Ludovic DeVere and it paints the man as more human than he wants anyone to believe. Of course, now there are new questions that need answering.

Creative, steamy, insightful, and historically accurate, THE DEVIL YOU KNOW by Victoria Vane is extraordinary writing that fills in the blanks connecting Ned and Phoebe's, Vesta and Hew's stories together with Ludovic DeVere's past which is completely exposed in such a way that this series is mounting to be one of the most innovative, creatively beautiful and romantically drawn Georgian romances ever.

I highly recommend reading THE DEVIL YOU KNOW by Victoria Vane as well as the first two novellas and specifically in the order in which they have been written. This series is extraordinary and literarily unique and shouldn't be missed by anyone who calls themselves a lover of historical romance. Each one unique and distinct yet better than the next even as I find myself eagerly anticipating the next for I've just learned that Victoria is going to be adding 2 more after the next, THE DEVIL'S MATCH plus a spin-off. Can it get any better than that?

"The Devil You Know" is novella #3 in this novella series and
its events take place prior to the events of novellas #1 and #2.
(Technically this novella can be read first.)
This can be read as a stand-alone novel.

How are the sex scenes?

Full of angst and very, very lustful.

How are the story lines?

They read like a full length novel, with one main plot and several smaller ones.

Summary

"The Devil You Know" is a Georgian historical romance based in Surrey, England. It prologues in 1768 then jumps to 1779, telling the unvarnished story of Ludovic "The Devil" Lord DeVere.

The Devil's to-be fiance tosses him aside for a man of higher rank and after she marries he decides to take her as his mistress. There is no greater revenge.

Baroness Diana, accompanying her cousin Annalee and her husband Sir Edward Chambers, expects to meet her husband at The Devil's residence after journeying apart for some time.

To Diana's dismay, her husband has gambled away all their assets and is now relying on a horse race to set their finances right. The Devil steps in to assist matters and pursues Diana earnestly, claiming he wants to "make amends for [her] husband's disgrace and fuck [her] senseless."

Review

Ms. Vane has transformed one of my least favorite characters into my favorite heroine of the entire series.

Diana is steadfast and strong, accepting her fate with quiet dignity and doing everything possible to save herself from ruin. Except for selling her body to DeVere.

"There is something you clearly do not yet understand, my lord. My virtue is neither for sale, nor for barter - under any circumstances."

This historical heroine has brains, backbone and doesn't resort to snarkiness in hopes of gaining the upper hand (which never works). Finally. Historical is a favorite genre for many, but the whiny, needy and over-the-top sassy heroines are used too often.

Women can be subtly strong and firmly polite. Thank you, Ms. Vane, for proving it.

We also get to meet the lovely Annalee, Sir Edward's deceased wife in the first two novellas. It was sad to read her - and to like her - because I knew she would be dead before the year was out. But I enjoyed getting to know her. May she rest in peace.

Confession: I never liked The Devil DeVere before this novel. He seemed too self-centered and destructive to everyone around him - completely irredeemable. While he still may be those things, now we know why. Which, surprisingly, makes him entirely redeemable. I almost sympathize with him.

Almost.

Vane warns readers that "The Devil You Know" is darker than the first two stories. She is right, it's darker. Not so dark that you should pass it up, however. The "darkness" can be found in references to painful sodomy experiences and a description of cold blooded murder.

"The Devil You Know" is a bit disturbing, offering up the right amount of sinister to make it my favorite novel of the series.

You liked it. Why didn't it get 5 stars?

Read the answer here.

No, no, noooooo - How can it end there?! I must start the next book right away!!

A new to me author, and a new to me narrator too. First, the book - I really enjoyed this story and the characters. Well, except for the ones I wasn't supposed to like, they were pretty despicable! But, the protagonists, I wanted to get to know them better! Even the secondary characters grabbed my attention. Diana was an intriguing heroine. She is married to a worthless man who has brought them to the point of financial ruin. After 10 years of being beaten down by him and living in a loveless and childless marriage, she discovers something that shakes her to the core. This drives her to seek out the devil himself and perhaps even to find herself. Ludovic DeVere, otherwise known as The Devil DeVere, has a bit of a reputation, but I suspect there is a gentleman deep down inside. I really, really want to see them get their HEA!! Because I suspect they will be so very good together! They sure were hot together!! I liked the writing style too. The language felt more like books I have read actually written historically, like a Jane Austen. I liked that.

Now, the narrator Eva Hathaway - overall, I thought she had a very pleasing voice to listen to. Her accent was different from most of the English accented narrators I've heard, not better or worse but different. At the beginning of the audiobook, my impression was that she was not putting much emotion into the reading. The characters sounded the same when they were happy as when they were distressed. There also didn't seem to be much differentiation in the characters. After listening for a while, this seemed to improve. I never felt like the level of emotions in the narration quite matched the level in the story, but it wasn't a flat reading by any stretch. And after listening for a bit, I was able to distinguish the characters well too. I will definitely listen to more by her in the future!

I would like to thank the author for providing me with a copy of this audiobook to review.

Out of the three Devil Devere books I’ve read this is by FAR my favorite! Victoria Vane managed to weave a fantastic tale of intrigue, romance, passion and deceit! I was hooked from the moment I started reading!

This book has a definitive darker tone to it from the previous two. The first two were flirtatious and fun. While this one in no way lacks for passion or romance, it is filled with mystery and deceit that will make anyone sit up and take notice. The tone of the story and the writing are darker than the first two but not so dark as to block out the passion. The passion between Diana and Devil burns hot and wild. I found myself hoping for a few more passionate embraces before the end of the book. I guess I’ll have to hope we see more of those in the fourth book!

Diana has been in a passionless marriage for the last 10 years. Even though her marriage has lacked passion and romance, she is woman of principles and remains faithful to her husband. That all changes in the blink of an eye when Diana discovers the truth about her husband. Diana gives in to the seduction of Devil Devere and has two nights of unbridled passion like she has never known. It all comes crashing down around her because of her husband and Devil’s former mistress, the duchess.

Devil does the best he can to protect Diana. Diana takes what Devil offers, although it pains her to do so. In the end, neither are happy or satisfied.

I’m eagerly awaiting the fourth book in this series. I can’t wait to see what happens next to Devil Devere and Diana. I’m also extremely curious to find out who the guilty party is. I have my suspicions but I guess I have to wait until August 24, 2012 when The Devil’s Match will be released! I hope it’s as dark and twisty as this one! I really liked that new element to the Devere series!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I could have sworn I did a review already, but I guess it didn't save. Anyway, despite the lack of happy-ever-after ending in this one, I loved this book...probably more than the first two. I've had a soft spot for DeVere since the first book, so that might be why. There's something deliciously decadent about a man who takes his pleasure and makes you feel desired while doing so.

Move over, Christian Grey. DeVere is a true dominant, even if he doesn't adhere to BDSM in the traditional (modern) sense. DeVere is the sort of man who inspires women to jump to do his bidding, if only to gain an approving smile from him. Well, all except one.

Diana was not a sympathetic character in the second book, though there was some evidence to suggest she had her reasons. This is the story that gives us all those juicy little details, and I have to say I like her MUCH more now.

Overall, this book jumps back in time from the first two, but I'm glad Ms. Vane didn't shove it all into back story for the next book. With as much history as these two characters had, it needed room to breathe and develop on its own. If you don't mind waiting for Diana and DeVere to have their happy ending, then you won't be disappointed with this first part of their story.

I had very high expectation for this novella, after having read the first two in this series, and Ms. Vane did not disappoint. I've waited in high anticipation for Ludovic's story because I found him very intriguing in the other novellas. While he is obviously a rake of the highest order, I just knew there was a compelling reason behind his licentious life style. Even though I enjoyed the first two in this series, The Devil You Know is brilliant. I can't wait for the final novella to come out!
