Clay Randall is back in this exciting, fast-paced third installment of the Detective Clay Randall series. In Perception of Power, Clay faces his biggest challenge yet when a powerful politician becomes obsessed with destroying him. Filled with investigative insights, a murder for hire scheme gone awry, and surprising plot twists, the story leads the reader from the sandy Florida beaches to the Nevada desert as detectives search for answers. Conceived and written by a seasoned law enforcement professional, the author wrote Perception of Power to serve as a cautionary tale of what can happen when the raw pursuit of power matters above all else.
I met this author and bought this book, his 3rd novel, at the Amelia Island book festival earlier this year. The author served 45 years in law enforcement prior to his debut in the literary world. This by far is the best book I picked up at the book festival of those I've completed reading. It is also a first class production, showing virtually no warts that occur when authors do everything themselves. Credit must go to the author's wife who doubles as Bruce Thomason's editor. This book is about a murder-for-hire scheme where law enforcement officials get tangled up with overambitious and corrupt politicians. The author knows the law enforcement environment and portrays it very credibly. There is no mystery to this plot, but it is sufficiently complex to be much more than just a chase scene to land the criminals. The writing is clear, the plot keeps moving and nothing is tricked up. There are a limited number of characters. We learn the backgrounds of just a few of them. Character development is not the strong point of this book. I enjoyed this - a real page-turner.
Thank you to author Bruce Thomason for this Kindle copy of Perception of Power. And thanks to Goodreads for hosting the opportunity through First Reads.
This was a well done police procedural / thriller with a good story, characters, and writing. Just a few editing issues, but much better than what is normally seen in ebooks today.
The tight story moves along at a nice pace, and some light humor is injected here and there throughout the book. Nice banter among the characters.
Again, I thought this book was well done, and can easily recommend Perception of Power to everyone drawn to to this genre. A good read.
What an awesome book. I enjoyed every page. Even though Slater killed, his story had compassion and understanding for what he did. I loved the twist that he recorded everything. Great book.
The author of this story came to my book club to discuss the writing experience of his novels. What I thoroughly enjoyed was the story did not take a cliche path. After the initial storyline was set, the author did a deeper exploration of one of the "bad guys." The character development was excellent and I liked how well the dialogue flowed. Great book.
