This book is so fun. It never takes itself seriously, and consequently, I never took it seriously either. It served a much-needed break from the rest of my life.

laughing hilariously

It originally began as a 番外 for another of her books, 逢魔时刻, and follows the story of 祝筱筱 & 严洛's son, 严谨 (a.k.a. 小魔王) and 梅瑰 (a.k.a.

I enjoyed it, but I feel guilty about how much I enjoyed it. My largest issues with this book isn't actually unique to it: I've noticed many 言情小说 have the same themes.

Theme #1: the girl is a huge pushover who cries at the drop of a hat.

梅瑰 is such a weak, passive character. Everything she does is a reaction to something else. She never instigates anything. Not that there's anything wrong with that - I mean, to each her own - but given societal context, I think the author may need to re-think her character development.

I'm not saying she should be rash and do things just for the sake of doing things, but, I mean, if you're not going to help, the least you could do is not cry, right?

Theme #2: the knight in shining armour always riding to the rescue. =="

Fine. I get it. He's better at fighting. He's the popular one. But -- does he really have to rescue her every single time? I'm not even asking for much - just, can she save herself for once?

Please?

Theme #3: the guy discouraging the girl from pursuing studies because she will ultimately become [his] housewife anyway.

I hate it when that happens, and it's happened so many times. And why is that a thing? Because, come on, that's just misogynistic.

description

I won't even talk about the fact that the guy is always portrayed as smarter than the girl, butwhy is it acceptable to discourage girls from furthering their own careers? This is going to be read by girls everywhere, and what are they going to think after being bombarded repeatedly with the message that if they fall in love with a rich guy, they're never going to have to work again?

Girls shouldn't exist solely in relation to the guy, they should have worth independently as well. I'm not saying that people only have worth when they can prove themselves academically or career-wise, but if that's what the girl wants, then who is the guy to dissuade her from it?

description

On the whole though, it was a good book. I enjoyed it. I may not agree with some of the content (hence 3.5 instead of 4 stars), but I had fun with it. It was funny, it was light, it was cute, and it delivered what I had hoped it would deliver.

And also, they were so cute together!

It's now 4/3/24 and ... I'm currently [slowly] listening to the prequel of this book - didn't realize they were connected 🤷🏻‍♀️ who told me to be illiterate 😅 (TBH thank goodness though cuz I might've already DNF'd the other/prior book without having first listened to this?)
Anyway... I don't even know how to classify this like it's OBVIOUSLY a book for adults, but more than half of it they're literally children - by which I mean, like 7 years old? And then it ends when she's ... I think 20? But like that's only the last ~two chapters?
So ... this was like ... a children's book for adults? O_o

I also kept thinking "this is the Chinese children's version of x-men 🙃" but evil re: the guy collecting/experimenting on people.

ML was a bit of an asshole [a lot] but also he was a literal child so ...
I dunno. I'm not mad I read this, but I definitely wouldn't re-read it.

[This ... might also be the first modern book I've listened to/read in full?]

C8 😱 they’re/bad people are looking for people like FL (and her mom?)
Not loving all this kid stuff but 🤷🏻‍♀️

C16 don’t love that they’re still what ML 10, FL ~8? 😐 interesting FL can hear SO many thoughts. Def don’t think they’ll find her mom till the end though…

C17 🤷🏻‍♀️ now he’s 15…
WTF why is her school being taken hostage. (And how is he going to explain knowing?)

C32 🤦🏻‍♀️ lol I literally said “oh fuck” when she says/thinks they have a sibling relationship. Also though 🙄🙄🙄😒😒😒🔪🔪🔪 these fucking idiots and their goddamn miscommunication. Like… why is it her fault.
Fuckheads.
Is this a stupid YA too? He just turned 18, she’s 16…
*sigh*

C34 😹☠️ when ML beats the crap out of the thugs & makes them call the cops on themselves 💯

C36 🙄😒 doesn’t XiaPei know not to talk about his school? Fuckhead.

C42 though insanely unrealistic I bet whatever “accident” that cut FL’s hand was some baddie trying to get her DNA for a test.

C43; changed to 1.87speed with this stupid ass XiaPei shit 😒🙄😡 why are people letting him meet with other dude.

C47 😒😡 I really hate how unintelligible the fucking phone call from ML’s mom is (are). Also 🙄 plot hole ML is already 18 but now his parents are saying he’s only almost 18 …

C53 😡 ShenFei the guy who ~likes FL is the son of baddie?! And 🤢🤢🤢 so is FL… ugh no wonder he says he’s her uncle so he can’t like her. There is that.
Yay secret plan COME ON KIDDIES.

C59 I like that they waited till he was 22 & she 20 (and then they immediately got married?)

O.o super abrupt ending with the cousin side story… well and ML/FL et Al looking maybe for the neighbors?
