What a great ghost story I read close to Halloween! I loved the cover of this book right away but the story was very captivating. I felt bad for Jamie Bradshaw as her life was throw into such dismay with a ghost not being helpful along the way. This book kept me on the edge of my seat wanting more through the whole story. It was a hard book to put down. * I choose to write a honest review after receiving this book from the author*
“The Flies” was a suspenseful, shiver-sending read in the traditions of classic thrillers. Here you have it all: the haunted house, the lonely owner, who doesn’t know if she’s being paranoid or if the house indeed has its own dark secrets, the invited priest, and all those things that will make you turn pages faster. I really enjoyed the suspenseful atmosphere and how it was slowly growing to become something bigger, something more sinister, until it reached its climax. I also couldn’t help but sympathize with the protagonist, Jamie, who had no other choice but to deal alone with her “nightmares,” after her husband had left her. As it turned out, the mysterious house had something to do with it too… If you love thriller and classic ghost stories, this book is definitely for you. Very enjoyable.
Strange things happen in Jamie Bradshaw’s house. After her failing health drives her husband away, Jamie drifts through life in solitary fashion. Her house is filled with sounds, the master bedroom is freezing cold and she lives in the basement. When she decides she needs help she calls in a priest. Then the buzzing of a million flies begins.
Ju Ephraime knows how to write suspense, creepy suspense. Her stories always keep me turning the pages in eerie trepidation and I am never disappointed. "Flies" delivers. The ending honestly blew my braincells.
"I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review”.
Jamie, following her separation from Josh, has been living all alone in her house in Cheshire, Connecticut. She has been sleeping in the basement because of the constant sound of footsteps above… So begins this classic ghost story…a lonely woman all alone in a house inhabited by an evil spirit… Noises, unexplained presence, closing of doors, switching of lights, noises… And what about the flies infesting the house..? She calls in the local pastor. Suffice to say this is a taut, tightly-controlled story that will keep you on the edge of your seat… Be prepared for a host of scares and surprises. Great yarn.
Author Ju Ephraime never fails in captivating an audience, and this brief but terrifying little book certainly is no exception. In this one, abandoned wife Jamie Bradshaw finds herself alone in a house that seems increasingly more alive...The creaks, doors opening and shutting, disembodied voices, and the constant sound of footsteps drives Jamie to involve the local priest. But the haunting doesn't stop there. Fans of mystery and thrilling stories with lots of creepy dark twists and turns will devour this little book in an evening. Ephraime's The Flies follows in a long tradition of unsettling stories; in Edgar Allan Poe fashion, her story will haunt long after the final page.
"The Flies" is a ghost story where we see the lives of two people / families trying to cope with a long-dead third. We see how lives get ruined even when outside help is asked for. There was a twist in the story that I didn't understand, but I'm not going to write spoilers, so I'll leave it at that. :) Overall, I liked the book, the atmosphere it created really fit the story. I usually call books I like "fun reads", this time it's not exactly the right word to use. :) Horroristic, in a good way. :) Great story!
In this short but satisfying ghost story, a woman trapped by circumstances in a house that would rival the hotel in The Shining fights off spirits with less than good intentions at heart.
The main character’s back story adds to the reader’s empathy of her plight, and makes her battle much more difficult and believable. And the out-of-the-blue plot twist either leads to dismay or joy – depending solely on the reader’s imagination.
Loved it!! Being a fan of author Ju Ephraime, I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. The Flies is an incredible, frightening read…I'll never look at an insect the same way anymore. Not one to give spoilers, as others have fleshed it out pretty well. This is quite a haunting page-turner, a fairly short read, full of twists and turns. And I highly recommend!
Wow, there is some spiritual warfare going on inside Ju Ephraime's book, 'The Flies.' This haunting of a tail had me nearly sprinkling Holy Water and chanting, "The power of Christ compels you!" I totally recommend this spine tingling read. 5 stars!!!
An amazing book! I don't read a lot of fiction, but this book was amazing! The author put a lot of work into this book to keep you guessing and believe me... the end will blow your mind!
I am excited to read more from this author as once you get one of these books, you want to read them all!
This is a ghost story! Ephraime delivers a spooky tale about the haunting of a Connecticut house. Jamie moved into her two-story dream home with her husband. Instead of luxuriating in her spa master bathroom, she finds herself living in her finished basement because she's so scared of the house. What follows is a great ghost story. Eerie, hair-raising fun!
A very enjoyable read especially for those who are Poe lovers. It reminded me of the movie The Fly. The protagonist was well set up in an empty house for 4 years after her husband left her because she had chronic illnesses that zapped her energy. Alone in the house, she's living in the basement because their are strange occurrences happening on the upper levels. No spoilers but be prepared for a tightly written, fast paced read with a very surprise ending.
A fabulous thriller. I read The Flies by Ju Ephraime, from beginning to end without taking a break. Jamie Bradshaw is in quite a predicament, alone in a house that appears to be haunted, or is she losing her mind? You won't want to put the story down until you discover the unexpected outcome.
A great read, not to be read alone in a creaky house at night.
The Flies by Ju Ephraime is a tale of a frightening nature. Flies are annoying little bugs at the best of times. Not to mention that disgusting thing that they do with their food. But, can you imagine being possessed by one?
Jamie Bradshaw hears footsteps and banging from things that she cannot see. It has become so bad that she has resorted to living in the basement where the spirits don't visit. They're behaving themselves, to a degree, at the moment; so, are they really there or are they just in her imagination? No one else seem to see them.
So, it's now that the flies make their entrance. Up until that point, the rest of the scene is set; a lone, disabled woman whose fears are magnified each day that she lives as a recluse in her basement. The appearance of these infuriating insects are the beginning of the end for Ms Bradshaw; this is the point where I feel the story starts to become much stronger.
However, could the reader have been left to discover what the intention (possession: as told in the introduction) of the flies were? I think it would have made this story that much more chilling to read. Maybe less telling and more showing would have increased the chill factor, too. Saying that, overall, I quite liked Flies. The storyline is definitely more interesting than some of the usual horror that I have read. Also a majority of the story can be read, say, over a lunch break, leaving the conclusion left to be read at a later time. That is, if you can't wait that long!
This is certainly a departure from my usual read. A spirit inhabits Jamie Bradshaw’s house and is destroying her life. Her marriage fails, she’s beset with unexplainable illnesses, a pastor is called to exorcise the ghosts. The tension rises as Jamie battles her demons terminating with an unexpected twist coming at the end. I found it an interesting story, the concept of a haunted house is the recipe for a chilling story. I enjoyed ‘The Flies’ but it did not completely captivate me. I felt the writing could have been tightened a little, a few typos etc. I’m sure lovers of the paranormal would enjoy ‘The Flies.’
