Love and compassion have no place on the battlefield - and Captain Ira Byrne knows that. Recovering from the loss of his fellow soldiers during the first wave of attack in New York, he has to team up with brilliant mind to rescue an asset - known as Blackbird - who has been assumed dead, or missing, for six years - before the start of World War III.
However, the team will soon realize that Blackbird has, not only a connection to the enemy who started the war, but also to Ira. And he'll find that the person he once knew has been locked away, replaced with a stubborn, stoic killing machine.
This was a pretty good book. I wish it had been more unpredictable, I could predict a lot of things (that Blackbird was going to turn out to be Meryl, that Meryl would survive the collapse of the building, that it would be a happy ending), and I had sort of a hard time telling who everyone was. I felt there wasn’t enough background or explanation given even at the beginning, it just sort of jumped into it. The characters even had more than one name each. It was confusing for me. And even though Blackbird turned out to be Meryl, "Blackbird" would oftentimes be referred to as a "he". A good story, I would’ve just liked for it to have been clearer in some areas.

Risen From Ashes, by Taylor M.Shirley, is my one hundred and thirty-eighth book that I have received and read from Goodreads. I found this book to be a really fun and enjoyable read. This book takes place in the year 2028. Russia and the United States have been at war for six years. The war has cost both sides lots of people's lives and town's distroyed. No one knows what caused the war, people are confused and only two people know the whole truth. I will not go into the story, for that you will have to read the book. I will say that I enjoyed the book and the story is worth reading.
Very good read! The story flowed well and the characters keep the reader invested. This is a great first novel and hopefully more to come from this author.
I liked the basic story, but would have loved to see more realistic characters. I felt like they seemed a little one dimensional. The dairy is a good idea which could be further developed.
