Laura Teagan has always had a passion for story telling. From an early age, it was verbal story telling, singing, and acting. It wasn’t until junior high that her love of books and story telling came together and she began working on her first book.

After a career in the traditional publishing world, Laura decided to launch her own writing career by self-publishing her first novel, The Assassin.

She’s currently finishing college, and she’ll graduate with a degree in public relations and advertising, plus a minor in creative writing, a degree package perfect for self-publishing.

The Assassin is the first book in The Cassie Morgan Series, and Laura is currently working on the sequel, Double Played, which will be out in early 2016.

When she isn’t working on one of her books, Laura runs the popular writing blog, Ginger & Books, and she’s recently launched the writing community, The Social Writer.

This is my friend's debut novel, and because of that I wanted to love it - and it does have potential, but overall the Assassin isn't there yet and I hate myself for saying it. Despite eight years being invested into this project, I feel it still needs a good revision and edit. And I know how hard Teagan has worked so it pains me to say it, but that is my honest opinion. I feel more research into FBI protocol is needed to give the book a feel of authenticity (you know, the whole write what you know?), and stronger emphasis between the character's fatal flaws and the movements of the plot (which currently follows a very similar structure to Janet Evanovich's One for the Money, an obvious strong point of inspiration).

Because of the latter, The Assassin stands as a tribute to One of the Money rather than standing on its own two feet. Unfortunately. Therefore,I am awarding it 3/5.
With a proper revision to make this novel come into its own, and a good edit to make it shine, it could easily be awarded higher.

If you haven't read this novel you need to go and buy it now. I'm not saying that because Laura is one of my friends but because this novel is ridiculously great. I loved how the suspense and engagement from this novel created a bubble that I didn't want to leave.

As a UK citizen I didn't really know much about how the FBI works but as an avid fan of all the CSI shows, along with Bones and Criminal Minds I can see how although this might not be exactly what happens in real life it definitely stuck with what I knew about the FBI. This brings me to Cassie Morgan, our main character.

First things first, I freaking love badass, rebellious woman. I feel strongly about a woman who knows and gets what she wants and Cassie does exactly that. She doesn't allow the constraints of the FBI to stop her in her beliefs and actions throughout the novel. She is a brilliant character and honestly I cannot wait for the next instalment.

Anders was a brilliant character. He seemed so mysterious and his chemistry with Cassie was off the charts. I loved how even though he was her mission she shot him in the leg and then ends up working with him to bring in another bad guy.

Overall this novel was fast-paced and had high stakes which keep you on the edge of your seat. Definitely pick this up if you're looking for a decent crime novel with a female twist.
