At the time, he brought not only a fresh tone, but also a new theme to contemporary German-language literature with the tragic and bloody history of the former Yugoslavia. Stanišić's prose was a shining example of "immigrant poetics" that broke with conventions and fertilized the supposedly boring German monotony with its liveliness, through other cultural experiences and perspectives.
