I have to say it again (yes, I know, go on, roll your eyes) but authors’ world building is such a huge draw for me, especially with paranormal shifter stories. There are so many tropes out there, not to mention the vast quantities of lore that can be used or thrown out. Do humans know about them, or are they hidden? Fated mates where they know instantly, or a more gradual realization? So many variations can be done or the author can throw it all out and start from scratch.
In 'Garret's Dilemma', the first book in Fel Fern's 'Darkfall Mountain Pack' series, the paranormal community has only been known to humans for the last twenty years and interspecies dating is still frowned upon. Bo and Royce have been together for a year and Bo considers himself lucky that a wealthy, successful gentleman and leader in the shifter community would be attracted to boring, workaholic Bo. Bo's mother has tried to warn him though, particularly about the gossip reports about Royce's ex-boyfriends all having disappeared. Bo isn't worried though.
"Royce wouldn’t hurt me. He never had. That was a lie he kept telling himself though, wasn’t it? Bo kept stifling the tiny voice in his head reminding him Royce wasn’t completely right in the head."
Bo should've listened to his momma, ‘cause Royce turns out to be one seriously cray-cray bear. One who hunts humans as prey and since he's now tired of Bo, well it's time for him to go. Bo, however, manages to use his brain and not let fear overtake him, and challenges Royce to a chase through the woods versus Bo just being tied to a bed and tortured slowly. I had to hand it to Bo that was smart thinking. Running gave him some chance even if it was a small one.
Bo never expected to find another cabin way out in the forest but he's so grateful when Garret opens the door. Garret helping him is good but also poses massive risks within the pack as their rules are very definite. Garret knows he and Bo can escape most of the punishment if he mates and claims him. Since Garret's wolf is screaming that Bo is his mate, it should be an easy decision, except Garret's mate died five years earlier and they should only get one. Garret mates and claims Bo and all should be well but there is someone in the pack who despises Garret and decides making a deal with a crazy werebear is the way to proceed.
A good beginning to a new series with a story that pulled me in, despite the numerous typos and other errors. I really liked Bo, and Garret definitely grew on me. I'm looking forward to more in the series.
NOTE: This book was provided by Siren Publishing for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews
The editing is bad enough to distract me from the story.. not the worst I've seen but does it matter? Should tell these authors proofread YOUR OWN work before submitting cus you aren't gonna get shit from Siren! ehhh.. End Rant.
I wanted to like this... kinda sorta?? There just feels like some strong inconsistencies to me. Like, Bo getting protected by Garrett is a big deal...other option is to become a pack sex toy.. HUH? But then after all resolutions, Bo moves and likes the town, which is RUN by shifters and has no problems. This... I'm sorry this puts the pack in general in an extremely bad light for me. Makes me think, bastards.. so why am I now gonna want to root for any of these jokers????
Oh, and what was so special about Bo making it a year before Royce decides to go to town, cashing in his special treat? Cus I didn't see the 'put up a fight and challenge' mindset Royce seemed to believe. Seriously?? They were practicing some bdsm and submissive stuff!
This would have been a lot better if there had been some better pacing with it. They go straight from 'oh my god the boyfriend I love and trusted just tried to kill and eat me' to 'I love my new werewolf' without any sort of transition. It comes off as really jarring. There's a lot of details and issues that were added that are just.. not necessary and often detract from the story, it's like when the author wrote this in her first draft she tossed everything into the book, then tried to make it work. It's not good and it definitely would have benefited from somebody else, just about anybody else, reading this and pointing out that adding in things like 'your choice is mated with me or pack sex slave' is rarely ever a good idea.
Fel Fern - I hope you read the reviews of your books on goodreads. The editing is absolutely disgraceful, from page one to maybe 10 (that I pushed through to read) there were so many errors I gave up. You need to talk to your editor and give them hell. One star is even too much.
I had actually purchased the first three books in this series as a bundle, but had decided to review this story separately. It had a pretty compelling plot with Bo, human, running away from an evil ex boyfriend who suddenly changes on him and wants to kill him. He ends up on the doorstep of a grumpy wolf shifter, Garret, and begins to melt his heart. I appreciated the fact that, Bo, already knew about shifters ahead of time so that the story wouldn't drag with waiting for him to be told by his mate. There was danger(even with the strange pack rules), heat, and a happily ever after. Loved it.
Love shifter books, So found a author I haven't read from. I thought the story was good. Little fast, at first with Bo and Royce. Needs some editing done, but I didn't feel like they were walls to stop me from reading. Garrett and Bo had chemistry that heated the pages up nicely. The shifter book was different from others that I have read, so that made it a nice change. Hope to read more from the author.
The editing was more than terrible or even nonexistent Wrong names, missing words and grammar errors. If I can spot them everyone can so I’m guessing it was nonexistent.
If the above weren’t enough, there were plot holes the size of Texas.
As allways since it’s such a short book I’ll try the next book in the series.
I purchased this book months ago. It has languished on my device for such a long time that I unfortunately I forgot about it. Then I recently saw #9 in the series and wanted to read it. So I went backwards and purchased # 9 down to #3. Apparently I had both #1 and #2. I am so angry with myself for not enjoying this series sooner.
This first book introduces the reader to the main characters: Bo Ramirez a Human accountant, his Bear shifter boyfriend wealthy successful businessman Royce Masters, and Garret Marks a Wolf shifter driven to seclusion by guilt over the death of his mate.
Other key players are the top level of the pack: initially one Alpha was mentioned, his name was Freddie Torres who was hard, believing in the old ways, but still a decent leader and confusingly another Alpha Sergio Estaban, his Beta younger brother Alessio, and their Gamma sister Michella. Plus a couple Enforcers twins Jared and Janet.
And an arrogant, not well liked, large, powerful bully, Wolf shifter Declan - who also happens to be the older brother of Garret's deceased mate, Brandon. Needless to say there's no lost between the two of them. Declan blames Garret for his brother's death. Another Wolf pack member was introduced, Harley a smaller much more likeable shifter despite his friendship with Declan. It seems Harley spends a lot of time trying to keep Declan from getting into more serious trouble with the other Darkfall Wolves.
Bo is a workaholic geeky young man whose boyfriend Royce forces him to take a much needed vacation. He often wondered what attracted the big beefy handsome Bear to an average joe like him, but he enjoyed the attention despite a few of the Bear's quirky habits. Royce always said it was part of his shifter's nature that he sometimes lost control.
But this time Royce went too far and Bo knew how vulnerable he'd allowed himself to be. His family had warned him against dating shifters, but he didn't let that stop him. How will he ever get himself out of his terrible situation? Will someone come rescue him if he screams loudly enough? Or is he just in such an isolated location in the woods that his cries for help are useless?
Garret lives alone in a small cabin in the Darkfall Mountain forest. Even though he's a Wolf shifter, he doesn't like being around the pack all the time, especially since the death of his shifter mate. He doesn't much enjoy being around most...Humans or Shifters. He likes his peace and quiet. Still he has a couple friends in the pack he knows he count on, a redhead Mark and his older dark-haired brother, Matt. So why does he think he hears a cry for help?
Garret is very reluctant to get involved in the rescue of a Human stupid enough to get himself in such a bad situation. And he also knows that the Darkfall Mountain pack isn't kind to Humans who fall into their clutches. Garret's not happy with the young Human, but he is very attracted to him. Could he possibly have a second Mate?
Bo is not happy either to be with another shifter. But there is something different about this grumpy Wolf who seems to spend most of his energy glowering. And Garret has no idea how tough & determined that Bo truly is. He has a strong desire to live as well as being very protective of those he cares for.
This story is full of action, danger, betrayal, denial, protective Alphas, a strong willed Human, a ferocious Bear, a Wolf pack who that does not like Humans, but there's also a second chance & a HEA for one couple. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was captivated, never knowing what would happen next in this action packed first book of the Darkfall Mountain series. As previously stated I purchased the rest of the remaining nine books.
Not overly long, but I've read a few quite long books recently and it was a nice break. If you're a Wolf Shifter / Human pairing fan you ought to enjoy this one. I've already begun the second book in the series.
I wanted to like it more having read and enjoyed the Puppyville series in all it's horrible, cracky glory, but unfortunately it didn't work for me at all. The editing is atrocious, and since it's not a self-pub I'm not as willing to forgive it, and there is a myriad of small inconsistencies and contradictions handwaved for the sake of the plot. And honestly, why would I care for people who use innocent humans as slaves, sexual and otherwise?
I can't believe the story line mistakes in this book..... I can understand Grammar mistakes but if you can't remember your own character history than something is wrong...... Siren must need money to let editing get this bad.... Ugh..... Author should be ashamed by this.....
