My Rating is 4.5

Brian Boru is a story set in the era of AD 919. Story of a boy who knocked off the eye balls of Ivar of Limerick, who killed his parents and tried to murder his brother. Years later, he comes back to take revenge and claim back his kingdom. The history of Brian Boru, which was debated for years by historians is portrayed with utmost conviction and a bit of fictional element. Every character is crafted carefully and with conviction. Each event is linked and interlinked seamlessly. Especially the method adopted by the villagers to get rid off the soldiers in their houses. I don't know if it has happened in history or if its just fiction but it was brilliant.

The love relation between Brian and Saiorse is rendered palpably. The depth of their passion is conveyed without unnecessary erotic build up, which itself proves the talent of the author. I am sure that the movie adaptation of the book will be exemplary.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Brian Boru is a story set in the era of AD 919.
The history of Brian Boru is portrayed with a hint of fictional element. Every character is crafted carefully and with a clear purpose. Each event is perfectly linked and intertwined. It was a compelling book that made me want to dive deeper into historical fiction.

The love interest between Brian and Saiorse is sweet and passionate. The depth of their passion is conveyed beautifully without being over dramatized as it so often is nowadays in many books therefore that Is certainly an accomplishment for the author.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction, war, especially if you want to be able to relate and sympathise with the characters. Teenagers and adults alike will enjoy this book!

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review almost 2 years ago. And I couldn't have the time to finished it.

It's been a busy couple years. When I first got this book I was starting my first job. It was really busy, I worked 12 hours a day. So I had no time to read or do anyting. I basically got lost in working. And after a time I totally forgot about this book. Recently I quit my job and I'm trying to get back into reading again. And I finished this book. I know after almost 2 years later. I'm trully sorry about that.

The book is about a brave man Brian Boru, great leader to his people. The story takes place in Ireland in 919 AD, he is trying to free his people from Norse. Even though I'm not a historical readings, I really enjoyed this book.

Thanks for the book again and I'm sorry for the delay.

I got this book from goodreads giveaway.

I enjoyed reading this book though the first half of it was quite hard to get into, but once I did I was captivated by the story. Brian Boru is an interesting character, most of the relationships are rich, there's a lot of action. Nonetheless, I thought some parts were overwritten and some lacked depth.

Overall, this book is an enjoyable and easy read that I would reccomend to history lovers.

Mark Mahon is quite an accomplished writer. Freedom Within The Heart may quite possibly be his best work to date. It’s an easy read about the story of an Irish king that is full of excitement, fictional lore, and compelling story telling.

“A grim smile appeared on the third assassin’s face. The then lifted his axe into the air. Just as he was about to deal Brian the same hand as… , Dalcassian ran up behind the murderer. He jerked the assassin’s head back with his left hand and sliced the killers throat open with the dagger that he held in his other hand”

This is the type of excitement you can expect throughout the entire experience. I personally love this aspect of descriptive narrative that almost feels like you’re reading a screenplay.

As a lover of fictional war titles, I can highly recommend this book with great confidence. The story has everything that one could love when reading a book about revenge, especially in a war genre. In this book, you will constantly be worried about the fate of the Irish clans, and whether or not they will succumb to the enemy, or will Brian Boru, the admirable King be able to avenge his family?
The author effectively demonstrates both the tragedies of war as well as the importance of history of one noble leader and their service for an entire nation.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction, war, especially if you like em’ dramatic. Teenagers and adults alike will enjoy this read.

I was very happy to be contacted by the author regarding a review of this book. I had read a bit about Brian Boru in the past and jumped at the chance to get to know him in a new light. I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed.

This is a story full of fascinating history. The exploits of Brian and his brother as boys and then as men are filled with action and adventure. We are taken along with them as they seek revenge for the murders of their parents and village.

The author has created a lovely story of what actually was and what might have been in this fictionalized version of an Irish hero and legend. It was very easy to feel that I was learning while being entertained - my favorite kind of story.

I highly recommend this book to history lovers and I think it would be an excellent way to get reluctant readers (especially of the young male variety) interested in a great tale.

I just finished reading “Brian Boru – Freedom Within The Heart” a few days ago. I have to say that this has been the most interesting novel I have read all year. Without giving away too many spoilers, I will say that this is an epic tale of love, lust, honour and family ties set in the historic times. If you love reading about Vikings, kinship, friendship and clan wars, then you will love this book. What I also find surprising is that even though this novel is a historical one, it is really easy to read. The author is very descriptive and imaginative. I love the kinship and strong brotherly love between characters Brian and Mahoun. It is inspiring. The novel gives a nod to familial ties and a love that knows no bounds despite the terror of war and violence threatening to tear their whole clan apart. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of a novel that is easy to read, has very well-developed characters and a fantastic plot line. I enjoyed the book from the beginning until the end.

As an unabashed history geek and half Irishman this was right up my street. This is a classic story of a hero driven by revenge. His parents killed by Viking raiders spur Brian Boru on to become a much loved leader of the Irish people against the Norse oppressors. I really like how this is a story from the opposing view to the Vikings. Too often the Vikings are romanticised and let’s be honest 99% of stories involving them are from their point of view. I found it very refreshing to see things from the opposing side and see Vikings for what they are/were.
The story itself and Brian Boru’s motivations really get you on board as it’s the kind of thing we all like to think we would do if we were wronged in this way. It is a fast paced and really enjoyable read. If you are into action packed historical stories then you will love this.

I was pleasantly surprised at this book. The storytelling and the battles was close to the D&D genre I was in love with. I was also much surprised that this was part of Irish history.

Great storytelling, nice choice of words, great structure over-all gives this novel by Mark Mahon an advantage over other of this genre. This was told in a way you'll never connect to a country's history. The details, description, action sequences was told in a simple yet picturesque manner. Th plot, was a unique combination of revenge, war, conquest, treachery and love. Brian Boru is one great hero, in the eyes of the people and in the eyes of his love. For those looking for an epic novel with action, romance, war and plot twists, don'y look far, Freedom within the Heart will satisfy you in all this. Great, great novel.

I decided to download this one after it was recommended to me by a friend. My friend spoke very highly of this book, so I thought that I would give it a try. I noticed that it was available through Kindle Unlimited, so I downloaded it. I was so impressed with this book and the plot. I'm an adult reader and I would say that the book is actually perfect for every age group. I thought that there was a lot of action in this book and it had a lot of spunk to keep me interested. Brian Boru is the main character and is trying to avenge his mother's and father's death. I liked how much energy Brian had and how much it meant to fight for the lives of his parents. Highly recommend this exciting action adventure!!

The story takes place in Ireland in 919 AD and deals with the struggles of this age and time. We got one of my favorite genres here, historical fiction. I really want to read more of this talented author. As already mentioned in my title, it is thrilling, well written and a fluent read, which I appreciate, because it saves you a lot of time while reading. I believe even people who are not into historical fiction can find a liking to this genre thanks to this novel. Freedom within the heart is entertaining and a great start for history newbies.

I found it enjoyable, reading it in my lunch break and didn't feel like I needed to read things five times over, which was often a problem for me when reading historical novels. Simply put: A beautiful book that deserves its 5 out of 5 stars!

Action packed historical fiction! Brian’s character growth is the greatest part of the story. I loved Brian's character. He's compelling and smart and I really liked the way the author wrote him. I think any youth (or old person, for that matter) would really sympathize with him. The writing is clean and appropriate for YA readers, offering up just enough action to keep it entertaining. I was interested in learning more about Norse culture and its influence in Ireland. The story reminded me of The Saxon Stories series. I would urge any fan of The Last Kingdom to read this as well. Awesome, informative and thrilling, a truly fantastic read!

The beautiful fields of Ireland have been plagued by Norse Tyranny for a long time now, with the Irish facing crude injustice and living under harsh circumstances. All this is about to change, as one young Irish revolutionary decides to win his freedom from his Norse oppressors. Brian Boru, the fierce revolutionary, is determined to free his people. He will go through challenging trials and defy all odds on the back of his unyielding spirit to save the Emerald Isle.
This novel is based on the award-winning screenplay with the same name as well as the movie due to be released in the near future.

A delve into the annals of history as the author carefully crafts each and every character purposefully. Set in the Irish clans is an inter-play of love and hate, oppression and resurrection, deeds and revenge. It expresses suppression by the Vikings, which leads to the murder of Boru’s parents. Will he sacrifice his braveness in the altar of fear? This is a must-read for all fans of historical fiction and the likes.

I read this author's graphic novel first and loved it so much that I had to get his novel. I wanted to read the full story about Brian Boru. Brian was a man who had to deal with a lot in his with his parents being killed when he was such a young kid. It was an interesting and touching story which I enjoyed reading and remembering some history at the same time.

I actually kind of liked this one. The story plot twists were really unexpected yet not at all mind blowing, but I did enjoy reading this one because it seemed like there's something that lured me into reading the tale until it was properly finished.

Brain Boru was the last Great king of Ireland in the year of 1002 to 1014. Also, he was the greatest military leader. He was born at Killaloe, Ireland in 941 and martyr at Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland in 23th April 1014. He has defeated the Ui Neil dynasty and became a high king.

Mark Mahon’s, “Brian Boru - Freedom within the Heart,” takes us back in time, to Ireland, where the land is filled with castles, beautiful mountains, lush forests, and beautiful women. The book opens up with a scene in which a father sits with children encamped about him while he tells the story of Norsemen, and what they do to his people. He cautions the children about Norsemen’s behavior, laughs while being truthful about the very real danger of being attacked. The village is indeed attacked very suddenly, leaving Brian Boru, the main character, to fend for his younger sibling. They grow up learning to love those who provided them with refuge, while harboring deep hatred, and making a vow to repay Ivar the Limerick for wiping their village out. As Brian good on his promise, his leadership skills, and ability to overcome is shown throughout this book. He plans surprise attacks, is reunited with a love one he thought was murdered, and eventually goes from pauper to king, after overcoming the odds. The author uses vivid details that add to this books awesomeness. It reads like a movie. There is nothing about this book that you will hate, and one can easily see why Mark Mahon scored so many nominations. In terms of adventure, I give this book a 10. Every chapter is written thoroughly. Every character is alive, and complete, not just a made up character, but people that you cheer for, wince for, and applaud for. This book has my vote.

Once I picked this book up and started reading it, I could not put it down. This is the story of a young man named Brian Boru (real person, by the way), and his battle to free his people from the Norse king Ivar of Limerick (also another real person). The author did an incredible job of making a real story educational and fun to read. It takes place around 919 AD in Ireland, during a time when the Norsemen were raiding the Irish villages and killing the people who lived there. Brian boldly faces Ivar, and leaves him with a scar to remember him by. Years later, the two cross paths again, when Brian leads a revolt to take back his land and rescue the Irish people. I don’t want to give away the ending here. This story was absolutely amazing and very well written. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the battle scenes. If you’re into medieval stories, or if you’re just looking for a great read, I strongly recommend this book.
