As a short story, I figured the purpose was to set up the rest of the series, but I didn't expect the book to end on such a deliberate cliffhanger. So the question is, was the short story intriguing enough to entice me to get the next book? I don't know.
The whole story felt flat. There wasn't really any tension or conflict and the characters were all pretty unremarkable. Successful short stories narrow the focus to a few characters and a main issue. This book was too broad and spread itself too thin in terms of developing the story and characters. At the end I didn't feel invested, which is pretty much the worst feeling at the end of a book. I'd rather hate something than feel nothing.
I'd skip this one. If I decide to read the next book, and it's awesome, I'll come back and update my review to let you know it is all worth it. But until then... no.
