The Daredevil Snared

Rate this book
Captain Caleb Frobisher, hedonistic youngest son of a seafaring dynasty, wants to be taken seriously by his family, and understands he has to prove himself sufficiently reformed. When opportunity strikes, he seizes the next leg of the covert mission his brothers have been pursuing and sails to Freetown. His actions are decisive, and he completes the mission's next stage—but responsibility, once exercised, has taken root, and he remains in the jungle to guard the captives whose rescue is the mission's ultimate goal.

Katherine Fortescue has fled the life of poverty her wastrel father had bequeathed her and come to Freetown as a governess, only to be kidnapped and put to work overseeing a child workforce at a mine. She and the other captured adults understand that their lives are limited by the life of the mine. Guarded by well-armed and well-trained mercenaries, the captives have been searching for some means of escape, but in vain. Then Katherine meets a handsome man—a captain—in the jungle, and he and his crew bring the sweet promise of rescue.

The sadistic mercenary captain who runs the mine has other ideas, but Caleb's true strength lies in extracting advantage from adversity, and through the clashes that follow, he matures into the leader of men he was always destined to be. The sort of man Katherine can trust—with her body, with her life. With her love.

The first voyage is one of exploration, the second one of discovery. The third journey brings maturity, while the fourth is a voyage of second chances. Continue the journey and follow the adventure, the mystery, and the romances to the dramatic end.

Stephanie Laurens was born in Sri Lanka, which was at the time the British colony of Ceylon. When she was 5, her family moved to Melbourne, Australia, where she was raised. After continuing through school and earning a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in Australia, Stephanie and her husband moved to Great Britain, taking one of the last true overland journeys from Katmandu to London.

Once in London, Stephanie and her husband both began work as research scientists in Kent. They lived in an area surrounded by history. Their own cottage was built in the 16th century, while next door were the protected ruins of an early Roman villa, and nearby was a 14th century castle.

After four years in England, Stephanie and her husband returned to Australia, where she continued to work in cancer research, eventually heading her own research laboratory. One evening Stephanie realized that she did not have any more of her favorite romance novels to read. After years of thinking about writing her own novel, during nights and weekends for the next several months, she began crafting her own story. That manuscript, Tangled Reins, was the first of her books to be published. After achieving a level of success with her novels, Stephanie "retired" from scientific research and became a full-time novelist. Her novels are primarily historical romances set in the Regency time period.

Stephanie and her husband live on peaceful acreage on the outskirts of Melbourne. If she isn't writing, she's reading, and if she's not reading, she's tending her garden.

A Daredevil Snared
2 Stars

In this installment, Caleb Frobisher is on a mission to find the mine in which the missing residents of Freetown are being forced to work. Once there, he encounters Miss Katherine Fortescue and sets about keeping the prisoners safe until a rescue force arrives.

Series note: As the books in the series all focus on a developing story arc, it is recommended that they be read in order.

Unfortunately, this series is not living up to its potential. The most significant problem in this book is the overly repetitious descriptions. Every single setting, event and character action or motivation is reiterated over and over. In fact, very little actually happens in the story and it feels as if Laurens is simply filling the pages so that she can complete the book and move on to the final installment.

Caleb and Katherine's characterization is abysmal. Despite his description as a daredevil, no details of his reckless past are provided, and neither is their any information on the financial struggles that led to Katherine becoming a governess in Freetown. Moreover, their romance is weak as they have zero chemistry and it is never clear why they develop feelings for each other.

If I weren't invested in finding out how the prisoners are rescued and the backers in London caught and punished, I would not bother with the final book.

I don't know if it's because of "middle book" syndrome or what, but this was the worst book in this quartet so far. If there were half star ratings, it'd get 1.5. I finished it in 5 hours because I skimmed and flipped through most of it going "don't care, don't care". There's a difference between adding details for world building and bludgeoning your readers with them. And the character I was the most interested in was the plot moppet ("a small child who has no purpose or development except to drive the plot forward" - SBTB).

This is the third book in the series and my favorite so far. At the end of the previous book, A Buccaneer at Heart, Caleb has stolen Robert's journal and departed for Freetown, to take up the next leg of the investigation. He is the youngest of the brothers and considered to be rather reckless. He wants the respect and trust of his brothers, and has been unable to convince them that he can be responsible.

As this book opens, Caleb and his crew, and fellow captain and friend Philippe and his crew, have located the slavers' camp and take it upon themselves to wipe them out. They are also smart enough to make it look like the slavers have simply moved on to greener pastures. Their next move is to find the mine and send its location back to England for them to mount a rescue. In doing so, they meet a young lad and one of the women, the only two captives allowed outside the gates of the compound.

Kate is the missing governess, who was taken to be in charge of the children. She is stunned by the presence of Caleb and his men. They bring hope to a group who have increasingly realized that they won't leave the jungle alive. Kate is able to make use of her trips outside the gate to get information to Caleb that is useful for his mission. She knows he'll have to leave, to return to England, but the hope he leaves behind will have to sustain them.

But Caleb can't bring himself to leave the lovely Kate and others in danger. So he sends the information off with his ship and most of his crew, while he, Philippe and others remain behind to watch over the captives. Unfortunately, the mercenary in charge of the mine discovers the men and makes them captives too. Caleb isn't too concerned. He is a man who is used to making the best of situations, and he immediately settles in to becoming part of captives' unit.

I have to say that I loved Caleb. He is one of those people that nothing can keep down for long. He is also smart, intuitive, and easy to like. He quickly makes a place for himself with the captive leadership, helping them to find ways to help themselves. A realistic look at the obstacles they face has them pulling together to survive until they can be rescued. I loved seeing Caleb's natural leadership abilities emerge. He doesn't simply take charge, he involves everyone, right down to the children, in the efforts to save them all. Of course, one of his biggest motivations is the desire to get to know Kate better. Kate is the perfect match for him. She is just as strong a leader and devotes her efforts to keeping hope alive among the women and children. She is also clever and thinks well in crisis situations.

I loved the development of the relationship between them. Caleb had been taken with her from the moment he saw her, meeting her simply solidified his fascination. Kate's fascination with Caleb was equally strong. Somehow, in the midst of the danger, they manage to have a truly wonderful courtship. With nothing but time stretching in front of them, they have the chance to truly get to know each other. Some stolen kisses ramp up the attraction they feel, and the hope that they will survive to explore it further.

But not everything goes smoothly. The captives are fully aware that when the mine is played out, they will be killed. They have to find a way to keep the mine going until their rescue can be accomplished. One tunnel is nearly depleted, and they have no idea how many diamonds are in the second tunnel. Plus, with the addition of Caleb and his men, there are more bodies able to dig. When it looks like that tunnel may play out before they are ready, the captives must come up with ways to delay that won't rouse the suspicions of their captors. I loved the spirit of cooperation that imbues them all, and the cleverness of their actions. But things look increasingly bleak as their efforts still bring them up short. The arrival in camp of one of the conspirators from town is just one more straw to be dealt with. A desperate attempt nearly goes horribly wrong, but in the end, brings an unexpected reprieve. We are also left with a cliffhanger, as the captives are still waiting for their rescue.

In the final part of the book we also finally get a look at the backers of the mine, and discover just how evil and highly placed they are. Their greed knows no bounds, and two of them decide that it's time to go to Africa and apply their own brand of motivation.

We also see Caleb's ship arrive, and the information sped to London and Caleb's brothers. Just as they are reading it over, still in the hallway, a carriage arrives, obviously in a hurry. From that carriage steps the oldest brother, Royd, who had been sent for by Wolverstone. To the shock of Robert and Declan, Royd is not alone. With him is a woman, referred to only as "Trouble". I'm so glad I already have the fourth book, as I would not want to have to wait to read the conclusion to this exciting series.

Geez, this was a loooong asssss story.
I feel it kept talking about he same issues, concerns and problems over and over again. It was never ending regarding the mine, the risks etc...
But, fuck I have to read the last one to sort all this shot out.

I am glad I started picking up historic romances- they actually have plot outside of romance. So far, most of the contemporary romances are just about the romance, which is ok if you like that.
In this one, the fight to free the captives continues with the youngest brother who is headstrong and brazen, but looking to gain the respect and trust of his older brothers.
I rather like Caleb, he is rather funny.
Kate is strong, in a different way from the other two women for the older two brothers.
She is a nice foil for Caleb, a responsible mature woman, but she still has the adventurous spirit to match his.
It will be interesting to see how she interacts with the much more headstrong Edwinna and Aillen.
There was actually a good bit of action in this one, from the capture of the men, to the mine collapse.
I love how Kate and Caleb are both so good with children as well, as that acknowledges what a lot of romances don't- babies usually follow! So far, the first book has shown this as well, with the second not really touching on it.

Really closer to 3.5*, but 3* isn't enough. The tension in the slaving compound and the mining stratagems (delaying tactics) brought the tension level up and counterbalanced the author's writing style. And the cliffhanger was really expected, since the 4th and final mission is in the last book.

This is book 3 in the Adventurers Quartet series -- the whole series is just WOW!!! I love Stephanie Laurens and she has absolutely outdone herself with this series. This book is just out and I can't wait for the next one. You really, really need to read this series in order because each book builds on the last. You could certainly read and enjoy this book as a stand-alone, but you would be missing such a rich background for the book!

In this series, the four Frobisher brothers each undertake a successive leg of a mission for the crown. People are going missing in Free Town and nobody is taking it seriously or even looking for them. A deep rooted conspiracy is suspected and therefore, the crown can't use its normal channels for investigation because they don't know who might be involved. The crown has even sent an undercover agent to investigate and he disappeared. So, the crown enlists the Frobishers to carry out the mission. The first mission is to find out basically what is going on and as much about who is involved as possible -- then get right back to England to report that. The next mission is to try to locate the slave camp and identify any more people who are involved then get right back to England and report that. The next mission (the one covered in this book) is to locate the mine the missing people have been kidnapped to operate and the fourth book will be the rescue and final wrap-up. The whole series is suspenseful, dangerous, and of course has a wonderful love story between a wonderful hero and heroine.

Captain Caleb Frobisher is the youngest of the four Frobisher brothers -- and the one who is deemed reckless and not grown up yet. Caleb wants to prove he can be responsible, so he steals his brother Robert's notebook from his leg of the mission and sets out on his own to take up the third leg of the mission -- that is the responsible non-reckless thing to do -- right.

Caleb along with his good friend Captain Phillipe Lascelle and his crew find the slave traders and decide to take them out so they can't kidnap and hurt any others. Then, they set out to find the mine and learn what they can. Once they find the mine, they happen across a young boy named Diccon. Diccon cannot work the mine because of severe allergies and is therefore allowed to roam the forest to pick fruits and nuts for the prisoners to eat. Diccon provides them with much information and tells them of the people within the camp.

Katherine Fortescue was kidnapped from Freetown because she is a governess and can manage the children who have been kidnapped. Katherine is a formidable advocate for those children and is the reason Diccon was allowed to collect fruit and nuts rather than being put to death. She's brave, intelligent, resourceful and beautiful -- what more could you want in a heroine. Caleb is attracted as soon as he sees her.

I won't go beyond what is above in my description of the story because it would surely spoil your read. Just know that it is full of twists and turns and you rarely know what is going to happen next. I just can't wait for the next one!!!

Very good continuation in the mystery that is this series. Caleb, youngest of the 4 Frobisher brothers, stole his older brother's notebook and has sailed to Africa to discover what has happened to the missing people. Along with his friend, Captain Phillipe Lascelle, they find the slaver's camp and mine in the jungle. After sending his ship home with detailed maps, he has to wait for help before being able to free the prisoners.

They meet a young boy, Diccon, who is allowed out of the camp to pick fruit and nuts. He tells them how the camp is run and who is there. Then one of the women, Kate, is allowed out to help Diccon. But Dubois, who runs the camp, becomes suspicious and finds the sailors. Caleb allows them to be taken as he can learn more inside the camp. He is also very attracted to Kate and wants to help her.

The prisoners work the mine and clean the diamonds knowing that when the mysterious backers have enough they will be killed. Their goal is to drag out the mining until help comes from England. The story does slow some as they wait for help. That allows time for Caleb and Kate to fall in love.

There is a lot more going on but I hate to ruin the story. I am looking forward to the final book in this series. Stephanie Laurens writes wonderful books. I hope, in the future, she writes one for Captain Lascelle. He is very interesting.

big disappointment. the story was so highly detailed that you couldn't help but wonder if this was a retelling of something that actually happened. details and details and details. you are "set up" from the beginning of the book to expect a rescue. the book was very suspenseful and you just kept waiting for that rescue and the big fight. i expected that the next book in the series would track down all the bad guys who set this up in the first place. and speaking of which, it would easily be just as "economical" to hire people to work in a mine as it is to pay mercenaries to guard them, pay a big-time mercenary to oversee the compound, to pay people to kidnap people to be slaves. really just as economical to just hire people! no real love story here. just a romance "on the side". and you wait for that rescue! and it never comes. you are just left "hanging" at the end. no satisfaction, just frustration. i feel like i wasted my time reading this book.

this is what I would call the bridge book, in most series it's usually the 2nd book,

but in this series it's the 3rd book,

and it drove me a little crazy as there was no "conclusion" type of thing because the real conclusion would be in book 4
please see the deluise book series on youtube for my reading of this book in November

FINAL DECISION: My favorite of the series so far.  I loved the hero Caleb and I thought the story was active and interesting and I loved that Caleb and Kate spent so much time together falling in love.

THE STORY:  Caleb Frobisher, the youngest brother, has taken on the next part of the mission -- without permission. His brothers have worked to discover the secret of the missing English people in the West African town of Freetown. People are being abducted by slavers to work in a mine.  Caleb is to find the location of the mine and send the information back so that a rescue can be mounted. Katherine "Kate" Fortescue is a governess who has been taken by the slavers to care for the captive children.  She meets Caleb and under extreme circumstances, the two find a way to bring hope to the captives and fall in love.

OPINION:  This is the third book in the series and I really think the action has picked up from the second book.  Caleb is a daredevil who might seem reckless but is actually an amazingly optimistic and flexible thinker. He is willing to change plans, to make adjustments, to work towards a goal without being deterred by setbacks.  I really loved his character which I found compelling. He seems like a guy I would like in real life. He doesn't have an ego that demands he be recognized as the leader.  He is willing to share responsibility, work with other people and take suggestions. All of these qualities are ones that Kate admires in Caleb.  The most important thing he brings to the captives, including Kate, is hope.

Kate is a leader herself. Independent. Strong. A woman who has made the best of a horrible situation. She is willing to take the hope that Caleb's presence provides and work for her rescue and future. She is a good match for Caleb.

One of the best parts of this book is how Caleb and Kate manage to have a relationship in midst of bad circumstances. Somehow, they have a sweet courtship and get to know one another.  There is something beautiful about love in the midst of horrible circumstances. It gives hope and also shows that things like friendship, love, community can prevail even in the most dire of circumstances.

This book has a countdown clock on it and thus the pacing was well done. Things matter in this book -- every moment is important. The captives need to live through this by working together towards making it to their rescue.

This book has set up the series for a great conclusion.

WORTH MENTIONING:  Oh, oh!  I can't wait to find out who the troublesome woman is in the fourth book.

CONNECTED BOOKS:  THE DAREDEVIL SNARED is the third book in the Adventurers Quartet.  While the romance is self-contained in this book, there is an overarching story which is told through all four books.  The books are meant to be read in order.

STAR RATING:  I give this book 4.5 stars. This review was originally posted on Top10RomanceBooks.com

The Daredevil Snared is the third book in The Adventurers Quartet series by Stephanie Laurens.

It's important to note that this book ends on a cliffhanger! A while back I read the fourth book in the series! A big mistake really because the angst I should have been feeling towards the captives in the story just wasn't there because I knew how it would end for them. But if you are sensible and read this book first then I am sure you will appreciate the drama!

OK, so...Katherine Fortescue is working as a governess in a place called Freeport. She gets kidnapped by people who want her to look after children forced into work in a diamond mine. In fact, all the miners and helpers in the mine have been kidnapped.

Captain Caleb Frobisher is the youngest son of 4, and so far two of his elder brothers (featured in the first two books) have done their part in trying to find and rescue the people in the mine. It's now Caleb's turn and he is determined to prove his worth by making sure the rescue is a success. He and his men put their all into finding the captives and even when things go terribly wrong, they could still turn out to be a bonus after all.

The story that follows, for me was a little drawn out but a lot of that might have been because I knew the ultimate outcome. A little of it also was because it took a long time before the romance started in the story. I am all about the romance! Thankfully the story took off once Caleb and Katherine met.

The characters were interesting and their part in trying to escape the clutches of the mercenary who had every intention of killing them all once they outlived their usefulness. I also enjoyed how despite their circumstances close friendships were formed. I am sure once you have read this book you will have to buy the next one because you will have to know the outcome. I am happy to say that the climax of the story is fabulous and that particular book earned a glowing 5-star review.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: THE DAREDEVIL SNARED is the third installment in Stephanie Laurens’s Regency-era historical romantic adventure series THE ADVENTURERS QUARTET focusing on the Frobisher brothers and their search for several missing women, children and military personnel in Freetown, South Africa. This is youngest brother Captain Caleb Frobisher, and governess Katherine Fortescue’s story line. THE DAREDEVIL SNARED can be read as a stand alone although I recommend reading the series in order as each installment builds upon the events of the previous story lines, and the ongoing ARC throughout.

Told from several third person perspectives THE DAREDEVIL SNARED continues the search for a number of missing children, women and British military officers in Freetown, South Africa presumed to have been kidnapped by a band of European slavers. Captain Caleb Frobisher and his men including best friend Captain Phillip Lascelle have been commissioned by the British Crown for the third leg of the search and rescue to locate the ‘mining camp’ and report back their findings but an unexpected encounter finds the Captain exposing his men to the enemy they seek. Caleb and his crew are imprisoned and forced to work the mines along with the men and women they are seeking but not before our hero is able to send off his report to the people back home. What ensues is the building relationship between Caleb and Katherine Fortescue, and the struggle to slow down the mining operation before their would-be rescuers arrive.

THE DAREDEVIL SNARED is an infinitely detailed story line with a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including men, women and children, as well as the captors and the revelation of the people in charge. The slow building story line becomes lost in the numerous, small details about mining for diamonds and the dangerous working conditions of which the prisoners have been exposed. Although their captor is not one to be crossed he does allow the prisoners some freedom and personal expression.

Liked many middle books in trilogies THE DAREDEVIL SNARED loses itself in a lack of real story line and series build up ; too much repetition, detail and focus on the mining for diamonds; and the slow building romance is more of an afterthought due to their circumstances and the potential for rescue from abroad.

THE DAREDEVIL SNARED is a story of adventure, greed, struggle and love. The premise is somewhat tedious and I lost interest very early due to the lack of any true drama or conflict. Hopefully the final installment LORD OF THE PRIVATEERS featuring eldest brother Royd Frobisher brings some much needed action and intrigue.

4 stars.

The devil-may-care youngest Frobisher brothers, Caleb was super-curious when first Declan and Robert rushed back into England from West Africa. But when Robert wouldn't let him know what it's all about, he went aboard Robert's ship and stole Robert's Captain's Log.

After learning all about his brothers' missions in Freetown and knowing that the next phase of the mission would be to locate the prisoners, he decided to see to the task himself, knowing that his older brothers wouldn't let him go otherwise.

This is almost like a boys-own adventure. Being the youngest, Caleb's nature is very different to his older brothers and very likeable. Katherine Fortescue is the nanny that was noted as being kidnapped from the settlement in the first book. I thought her character wasn't as well drawn.

The forced imprisonment of Caleb and his men and the various schemes they concocted to extend their life expectancy are very ingenious. A pity that due to it being the 3rd book in the series, Caleb and the prisoners had to still be captives so that there can be a "rescue", means this book ends with a cliffhanger.

A great continuation of The Adventurers Quartet by Stephanie Laurens. This story does build on the previous stories so I do not recommend reading this as a stand-alone. The baby brother of a shipping family, Caleb is ready for his chance to prove that he can be depended on and carrying on the mission that his family has accepted is his best way. He and his family have tracked down white slavers capturing men, women, and children who are being forced to mine diamonds. With the diamonds running low the captives are losing their chances of survival, something that Caleb will not let happen. After he and his crew are captured and added to the mix, governess Kate and the others work to find a new plan to keep them alive until help arrives. Because Kate knows that Caleb and his crew provide them with hope. It may be a little unconventional but Kate and Caleb can't help the feelings that are building between them even if they are in the middle of the jungle. Will their love last until the rescue is complete or will the diamonds run out and their countdown end? Really great story, great build up for the growth of the over arching plot line. Can't wait until the end!

“The Daredevil Snared” by Stephanie Laurens is Volume 3 in ‘The Adventurers Quartet’ series and centers on Caleb Frobisher as he follows the clues provided by his brothers and investigates the dangerous mystery that results in him meeting Katherine (Kate) Fortescue. Together, Caleb and Kate search for a way to thwart a sadistic captor, free all of those caught in the man's evil web, and pursue their mutual attraction.

This historical romance story is an interesting combination of exotic locale, atypical danger, and frightening exploration of the evils that can be perpetuated by greed. True to this author’s pattern, this story also shows the way courage can be demonstrated by those of all ages and classes, with ingenuity and intelligence providing excellent defense. I love that even the smallest or weakest prisoner is protected and encouraged while the indefatigable British perseverance is vividly portrayed. I regret to say that I have not read the previous stories in this series (yet) but the events leading up to this story were adeptly summarized and I had no trouble becoming immersed in the adventures of these folks. There are some events which strain credulity a bit but the overall story was a delightful light read that will undoubtedly whet your appetite for the exciting fourth book in the series.

I think I have said this in my reviews of 'Stephanie Laurens' books. It bears repeating. She is the Queen of stretching out a 'love' scene. This time she stretched out this story by mining diamonds: diamond by diamond. I love the story, the characters, and the mystery. I also like that the story continues from book to book/brother to brother. However, I hope to never read about another diamond. I skipped a lot until I got to the end of this installment. Thanks goodness the last installment is coming up. I am ready to get these people out of Africa. Recommend for all of the positive reasons.

The Daredevil Snared is a very slow pace book. Part of this comes from the fact that every detail is thoroughly written. EVERY FACT. The relationship between Caleb and Kate comes together rather quickly. They share their wants and needs for their future together almost right away, so therefore the rest of the book is full of the mine and how to stretch out the time that they have.
If you've read book 1 and 2 then of course this book is needed for the next step as there still is one final book in the series after this one. Just thought fellow readers should know what they're getting.

A cliffhanger?! I hate cliffhangers. I know why she did it and it makes absolute sense but I want to know what happens next and the next book seems so far away! Gah! It'll be interesting to see how Caleb and his men deal with the mine. I'm also intrigued by the oldest brother and his mysterious lady companion. So many questions to be answered so I need the next book now. Gimme

I liked this addition to the Adventurers Quartet. However, I might really just give it 2.5 stars. It felt like the author was just dragging out the story. I thought it was way too slow in the 2nd half of the book. Even so, this is a fun story and I am anxiously awaiting the end of it.

So long and drawn out...I guess I'm not a great fan of the writing style, although I wanted to love this story.

" Perché aveva pensato di pedinarla? Cosa lo aveva reso sospettoso? Oltrepassarono i cancelli aperti.
