"You are so beautifully mine," Ondry whispered. "... I know of no joy that equals this."
"And then once in a while a palteia comes along, and that's the one person they're ever allowed to love ... A palteia is the only being a Rownt can ever love unconditionally and keep forever."
"I was proud of every good trade you made. How could I not feel pride when I had taught you to steal?"
"I will defy the gods on the matter."
"You don't believe in the gods."
"Then they will be easy to defy," Ondry said.

"You worry we are not compatible, but I know of no joy that equals this."
"What are they doing?" Ondry asked as he watched a pair of humans press their faces together oddly.
"Um... kissing." (...) "Two individuals press their lips together. Humans have a lot of nerve endings in their lips, so that's sensitive skin." (...) "It's a ritual to show affection."
"Is this a ritual I should use with you to show my fondness?", Ondry asked.
Maybe Ondry had been a terror when he was forty, but he was pretty perfect now.
"I will not lose you. The story scrolls say only a palteia can defy the laws of the gods with impunity, for even the gods would hesitate to stand between a palteia and his chosen chilta. They fail to say the same is true of a chilta. I will defy the gods on this matter."
"And after a while of having someone put me at the center of his universe, I pretty much feel the same about him."

“To excel and to know how to show it is to excel twice.”
-Baltasar Gracián

“When Ondry hovered over him, Liam felt so wonderfully trapped. He needed another word for it because trapped had such negative associations, and Liam loved this feeling. It was love and caring and safety and comfort all in one. Trapped was not fearing the future because Ondry would never let go. Every time Ondry pinned him down, Liam had physical proof that he could trust Ondry to always want him—always hold him close.”
“A human would get tired of having to make me the center of his life.”
“And I am not human.”
“We’re palteia. They feel love. I don’t care what Colonel Diallo told you; the Rownt do feel love the way couples might, but they can’t have it. They are a world of Doms, and they aren’t allowed to touch anyone. Touch is all about control. And then every once in a while a palteia comes along, and that’s the one person they’re ever allowed to love.”
An Extraordinary Story with an Outstanding Narration
