The Way of the Shaman #2

The Kartoss Gambit

Rate this book
A product of the latest technologies, Barliona is a virtual world brimming with fun and entertainment. The government has become the guarantor for the in-game currency, allowing its free circulation. As a result, the population floods Barliona in pursuit of easy money.

It doesn't take long for the game developers to discover a source of free labor: real-world prison convicts. While their bodies are locked in special auto-maintenance virtual capsules, the prisoners' minds are released into Barliona's virtual mines.

Dmitry Mahan has been through it all. Sentenced to eight years hard labor, he now struggles with an unpopular class - the Shaman - and an equally unpopular profession of a Jeweler. His fight for survival becomes anything but virtual.

Vasily Mahanenko is a fantasy author working in the new genre of LitRPG - the MMO-based fantasy and sci fi. His Way of the Shaman series took Russian literature by storm in 2012.

Vasily dipped into his college-days insider knowledge as a hardcore gamer in order to create a believable world of the virtual-reality MMO game. His bestselling series combines fiction and video games, telling the story of Shaman and his friends stuck in the ruthless reality of Barliona. He used his more than ten years' experience as an ERP implementation project manager to approach his writing in a well-organized manner, working to a strict schedule, a set of deadlines and even a budget. At the moment, the series boasts six novels with the seventh one in the works - this time the author expands on stories of Shaman's companions and those who helped and supported him in his trials and tribulations.

The first book of the series has already been translated into English, with more translations to follow, aiming to make the Way of the Shaman series available to the English-language reader in its entirety.

Vasily's other passion is space exploration which is why he now works on a follow-up series entitled Galaktiona. Set in a space-simulator based world, the first book of the series in already finished while Vasily works on its sequel.

I have started 2 series of books that based in a mmorpg world... This is in my humble opinion by far the better read. There are only 2 books out in this series but I intend to follow it and hope that sequels follow soon.

Our hero building a life in a computer world as he "does his time" leads ue on an enjoyable as at least semi-plausible story.

Mahan placed in the world as a convict miner has made a success of a very unpopular class and profession and his story continues. Highly recommended, enjoy.

I didn't even finish it.
I quite liked the first book; there was plenty of logic, the plot was moving smoothly and fast but not too fast and the MC was good but not exceptional.
Everything went bad in this book. Here are some of the things which made me dislike the story:
1) Too many quests! I was at 30% of the book and there were a dozen quests active for the MC. He is just a lvl 20 player and because he is a criminal he also has the distrust of the NPCs and he is staying in a completely remote village which in theory has basically no quests, but somehow he keeps getting new missions and even of a high quality. It is simply not believable......especially when he starts doing the quest for the 2 old ladies which seems the noobiest quest possible but somehow it turns out to be exactly what he needs for his class quest.
2) Too soon the MC is meeting with the important people. He has left the prison for just a couple weeks and he is already in contact with the most important and high lvl players and with the Emperor, even thought other people can spend their entire game life without getting near any of them.
3) All the Shaman thing about instincts etc. is too much supernatural to be appreciable. Every time the MC does something outside the normal range the author simply justify it by saying that his instincts kick in and resolve the problem.
4) All in all everything is happening too fast.
I'm sorry, but I will have to drop this serie of books. It started well, but the author tried to put too much stuff in it and ended up exaggerating.

The story is quite nice actually, but the amount of legendary items, quests, boni and improvements he get's forced down his throat are ludicrous - even for a LitRPG. You're a lv21 noob and have a portal scroll? No problem take the command of the 500 man raid of lv300+ players. Oh you leveled like for 46 levels by this. Oh you helped some old NPCs carry some letters? Nice, here get some quests for a legendary dragon pet. You have a legendarya lv1 Dragon Pet that is extremly hard to train? Oh no problem, let it play with a NPC to instantly level it to lv36. Oh you can't speak with the goblins you try to lure into a trap by crossdressing? No problem, just take these languages others grind half a year in a library for free. Seriously, this is way to much for a extremly low leveled player. If it would have been toned down a bit, I would have given it something around four stars I guess, but not like this. Where the first book was too slow, this one progressed him way too fast.

Boring. You won't find anything surprising here. The plot is so basic and novice and a lot of things just don't make any sense. The MC suddenly has some master intuition (which is vaguely explained) and some stupid backstory behind him getting screwed over by his hacking teacher (funny that the first time wasn't enough for the idiot)... There's people level 300+ and the fact that a level 10 or so shaman was able to create this work of art or whatever that has everyone looking for him is just dumb. At least make the plot more believable. The first book really led me to believe this would be different than the other crappy novels flooding this genre. It's not. It's awful. The plot seems like something a 16-year-old would come up with. Nothing more than wish-fulfillment for people who want to feel like they're a special butterfly.

This book is trash. Not even fit for 5 dollars.

rare epic or legendary.... stupidly lucky and totally unrealistic of any video game ever made. To many times the MC's of these types of stories get stupidly powerful or lucky right away. I assume it's to keep the interest of the reader but personally it would be much more entertaining if he really was like everyone else and had to work for it instead of getting everything handed to him by the system that is suppose to be a punishment. Out of billions of players since it's made clear that this is basically the only game how would one random prisoner get so lucky and why would they allow it when it is suppose to be a prison sentence.

Read it in one extended sitting, instead of doing basically anything else. Really like Mahanenko's take on "trapped in VR", already want the next in series!

I thought this was a very good book that built on the previous book, but at the same time changed a lot of the rules. Since Man is now in the game and not at the prison mine, there is no level limit to his character of 13. Also there are a lot more quests and ways to get experience. So while it took him forever to gain experience and levels in the mine, the rate he was able to gain experience in the main game was incredible. We also find out more about being a shaman.

Part of the story that I kind of liked that was much different from other LitRPG books is the inclusion of Man using his intuition. The Shamans all tell Man to trust his feelings and not to do what he thinks is the right thing to do, but what he feels as the right thing to do. Now, he is in a virtual reality world, so I don't know how a game could be programed to understand intuition. I can see how another reader might find this annoying, as it does not make a lot of sense. It makes me wonder if there is something else going on. Man finds himself at the center of a lot of change. Things that have never happened to anyone else before, seem to happen to him all the time. If I read all the books and find out there was nothing to this aspect of the story and it was just a coincidence, I might be a little annoyed. As it stands now though, I am just interested to see where it goes. Things like: how at his low level is he able create such epic items with his crafting? There is almost a spiritual aspect to the story (spiritual might not be the correct word: faith in self? belief in purpose? It is hard to describe, but I do like it). At the same time the character uses his intuition, he also uses his head. There are good explanations on his problem solving skills. There were sometimes he was kind of slow on the uptake when events were happening, but overall I really enjoyed his problem solving ability and his inner fight between his head and his heart.

Very enjoyable story and I can't wait to listen to the next audiobook.

This is the second book on "The Way of the Shaman"series and it advances the story far faster then the introductory one did. Here we see Mahan use his instinct rather than just him looking at statistics and situations. He has fully embraced his characters Shaman abilities. After successfully leaving the mining correctional facility and rejoining the Barliona world, he has been sent for a stint in a little town out of the hustle and bustle of the world.
But he seems to have found himself in interesting times, for a smallish town. He thought it would be impossible for him to level up. But hardly does a moment pass that he does not find a new Quest of challenge posted for him.
Mahan is involved in a lot of action and this book is chock full of constant action. You will be glued to the book up to the very end when you discover a complicated plan that Mahan has landed himself in.
This is a super fun book and it really shows off LITRPG.

Honestly as far as Lit RPGs go it was pretty fun. It was much more complicated than the first though which was fairly detrimental to my enjoyment. Pages and pages of stats and quest descriptions that often went a little over my head really bogged down the narrative. It was really fun to see how everything came together in the end though.

As a fan of RPG-lit I really enjoyed this second book in this series. You feel really involved in the story as there are quests which do not have immediately obvious solutions. The plot has lots going on which keeps you engaged and the crafting stat is really interesting. Great book and looking forward to reading book 3!

O forse no.

A lot of potential but it never quite made it. The plot is good but I don't know if it was the translation or just the original writing style but half of the first few books seemed to be written for 10 year olds and then you get a plot line that felt normal then back to the 10 year old again.
I stuck with it though and finished the series.
The YA writing style got better around book 3 but then soon the plot started to get all confused. The final major plot point was pretty ridiculous and ended lowering my opinion that had been slowly rising over books 5 and 6 . Overall I give the series 3 stars. I would recommend the series higher for ages in the low to mid teens. But for more advanced readers I would say pick up Alterworld or The Land.

Oh LitRPG you guilty pleasure of mine. I usually love reading them and hate at the same time ('cause it's a relatively young genre and most books suck) but this one was a refreshing one.
I recommend this if you read LitRPG stories but if not then you should really avoid it, it will seem weird to you.

I gave it 4 stars 'cause well... gamer's love.

This book was better than the first book in regards that it had a rising climate at the end. The beginning of the book started off fairly slow and up into about a third of the way thru the book nothing really happened. But then all of a sudden things start to occur and then more quests appear and then before you know it Mahan has a dragan and is about to command the world's leading clans at level 21. Like what?! The ending to this book was awesome. I thought the addition of the curse chess board was a genius idea and will spice up future battles in the coming books. Looking forward to Mahan starting his clan with his pals he made in the clan! Gonna start the next book now.
