Mel Whitby is a milkman's daughter with a passion for horses. She can't believe it when she finds a mysterious horse in a railway field. The enormous horse is in desperate need of attention and food - Mel knows she can take care of him.
This is a great short novel for kids, especially girls, who love horses. A schoolgirl in England finds a friend in a lonely, abandoned carthorse. She names him Thunderfoot and keeps going to see him even though she's supposed to be looking for a pocket money job, with her dad being laid off from his job as a milkman.
Young readers will learn how hard unemployment can be for the whole family, a few solutions, and something of how life works, bullies of all ages included. They will also learn how to break and train a draught horse, and some of the realities of keeping such a large horse.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story, which is set in England. I have not read anything else by this author but will look out for her work. This is an unbiased review.
