Damsels in Distress

Rate this book
What happens when a fifteen-year-old secret between three best friends is exposed? Celeste Harper seems to be happily married and living life to its fullest. That's what she wants everyone to believe, but her failure to conceive a baby and the critical information she is withholding from her husband may demolish her house of cards. Ginger Brown meets a guy online and invites him to stay in her home. It isn't long before she finds herself having to ask for permission to go to church. Dirty dishes left in the sink, canned goods not neatly stacked, and missing curfew by just one minute earns Ginger a beat down on a regular basis. How long will the makeup hide the bruises? Portia Dunn is single and fancy free, but she has a dangerous taste for married men. She enjoys collecting money for her rent, car note, and bills. When a wife takes notice of mishandled funds and takes over the checkbook, Portia's free ride is over. Now faced with having to support her own shopping addiction, Portia puts a plan in motion to make it too easy for the Mrs. to learn of her husband's adulterous affair. These three women have shared an unbreakable bond since high school. They've also vowed to never make mention of what occurred in a dark, dingy basement during their junior year. When a heated fellowship between them develops into an all-out brawl with name calling, the very subject they've sworn to keep buried suddenly emerges. The Damsels turn on each other, and war is declared.

Part 2 please

I enjoyed this story. The things that the characters especially what Ginger was putting herself through was heartbreaking and frustrating. However what she went through made me think of how people invite certain things into their lives then realize that the very thing they invited in isn't good for them but become engulfed with paralyzing fear when trying to separate from it. Now Portia irritated me to no end because she went after guys that she knew weren't for her and expected so much more from them. This also makes me think of what people (including myself) knowing go after something that we know isn't right for us and expect grand things from it. Celeste reminds me that we can all be free when we stick to the truth from the very beginning of any relationship. They all show how valuable a great friendship can be. Ok, I'm done...didn't expect to go off thinking all deep. Lol..but I truly enjoy Nikita Lynnette Nichols' books. Can't wait to read many more

Review: Nikita did a good job. I enjoyed reading and each of characters in this book. It's a breathtaking, interesting and amazing read. Each of characters have been good friends since high school and telling their stories about what they have been through with men.

Question? When is part 2 of this book coming ? I'm looking forward to read part 2 of this book.

Ms. Nichols has done it again. Real life issues, intriguing characters and God's unfailing love. The author has a talent for bringing raw but real drama to Christian fiction readers. I love to read her books because they deal with the struggle many Christians face but may not openly talk about because "we are supposed to be Christians".

This book follows three best friends as their faith, friendships and personal relationships are put to the test. Ms. Nichols does an excellent job of letting the reader see the issues from both the outsider's and insider's perspective. Great Read!

I didn't realize this was a Christian fiction book when I got it because I bought it based on the name. It was an overall good read. Preachy and a little over the top with the cartwheeling church goers for the lord, but as it is in the Christian fiction genre, I can see where the target audience might have been moved by it. The writing is good and the characters are decently developed, though not much about their family was discussed. It was an overall good book.

After revealing a secret that has been kept silent for 15 years, 3 best friends turn on each other verbally, but will they let this destroy their relationship for good? This novel is fast pace, full of surprises and sure to keep you turning pages.

This book starts off being a hood story, but turns into a holey roller story. I was confused on if to drink a 40oz or drop down on my knees in prayer.

A true friend will have your back and tell you when you are wrong. That is just what Celeste, Ginger and Portia did to and for each other. It is also apparent that self esteem or the lack there of played a vital role in some of the decisions they made or behavior they absorbed. Experiences and true friendships allowed them to prevail.

Ginger, Celeste and Portia have been best friends since high school. They all have secrets they don't want exposed, but one day during a heated argument they forget that and start throwing things up that they tried to forget and not think about.
Ginger has a knack for meeting men online. The latest one has moved into her house, has no job, doesn't contribute anything, and on top of all of that he beats her. She has to damn near beat him to death one night when she comes home and he is high. This is the night she decides to stand up to him and when he tries to hit her and falls, she beats him really bad. This is when she decides that she deserves better and leaves him for good.

Celeste had an abortion when she was in high school and as a result of it, she cannot have children. The only problem is, her husband has no idea and he thinks they are trying to have children. When he overhears her talking on the phone to her doctor one day he finally finds out the truth. Celeste is devastated. Further on down the road, Celeste finally does get pregnant and when she does, she turns into a miserable pregnant woman and treats everyone around her miserably. When it's all over, she has a beautiful baby boy.

Portia has a problem sleeping with married men. When the wife of one of the men finds out, he has to stop giving Portia money and stop paying her bills. Before Portia leaves him for the last time, she leaves her earrings and a note behind for his wife to find. When his wife finds it, she has a heart attack. Robert is furious and he goes to Portia's house to confront her. She won't let him in, but he finds his way in when he helps a lady with her groceries. Portia cracks the door with the chain on. He breaks the chain and pushes his way into her home. He slaps her around. As he's leaving, Portia says she's pregnant. He turns around and comes back and proceeds to beat Portia to a pulp! When her friends see her, she is in the hospital beaten badly. Robert almost killed her. Hopefully she will learn her lesson, and stay away from married men.

This book was really good. Read: May 2014

Very good read! This book tells the story of three childhood best friends and the ups and downs of their relationships with each other and the men in their lives. It takes a lot of praying & faith to maintain and survive these relationships. A good read without all the cursing and street violence in a lot of novels these days.

Good read with a nice flow.

This was a interesting read where the characters drew you into their lives. I must admit the first half of the book was a page-turner. Celeste, Ginger and Portia's life seem to flash before you and it left me holding my breathe at times. However, after RICHARD was caught the pace slowed tremendously.

Pretty decent read. Three friends. One is in an abusive relationship. One is working over the married men in the city. The other one is lying to her husband about why she cannot become pregnant. A belief in the Lord weaves through the relationship somewhere. It ended in a nice way.
