Does being mates really mean a guaranteed happy-ever-after?

Isaiah already has enough problems in his life without adding a new one—his mate. The man Fate chose for Isaiah isn’t just any man, no. It’s the man who kidnapped Jamie for the Glass Research Company, the man Dominic kept locked up for a year. And now he’s out and living with the pride, eating with them and sleeping in the room next to Isaiah’s.

John knows he’s lucky. Dominic could have killed him for what he did, but the lion shifter gives him a second chance instead, and John isn’t about to waste it. He’s not all that comfortable around shifters yet, but it’s not like he has to like them. Even if he finds out he’s a shifter’s mate.

As if things weren’t already difficult enough, Isaiah has to go home and leave John behind. Will John come and help when Isaiah’s house is attacked? Will Isaiah finally realize he can’t live his life for his mother? And even if he does, will John take him back?

Catherine is the creator of several series, most of them paranormal, including the Whitedell Pride Series and the Gillham Pack Series. While she graduated in translation, she decided to go the writer’s way because it was more fun to create her own stories and characters.
She’s been living in Italy for more than twenty years, but she’s a daughter of the North—Belgium to be precise—and she misses it so much that she’s already planning to move back.
She loves pizza—probably too much —her pets, and of course, books. She sneaks some reading time in her schedule every time she has five minutes free from writing, demands from her various pets and son, and lastly, housework.

This was book 14 in the "Whitedell Pride" series. John Smith who is human has been locked up by the pride Alpha Dominic for a year John kidnapped Jamie he thought that the pride would have killed him. Isaiah who is a bat-ear fox has been watching him for a year he feels drawn to John he knows that John is his mate and he is not sure what to due about it. Isaiah is not sure how the pride will act when they find out and then there is his mother she is the Alpha of his birth skull the same skull that his father was the Alpha of who kick him out of when they found out he was gay. This was a good read when John finds out that he is Isaiah's mate he doesn't know what to think he is still a little creeped out by people changing into animals. When Isiah agrees to return home to become Alpha and to marry someone his mother has picked for him he and John get close during the weeks leading up to his time to leave. I really like Keenan he tries to help everyone and with Nysys these two are causing trouble. When a pack of wolves attack his skull Isaiah's sister call Dominic and the enforcers come to help while in the basement Isaiah finds that Nysys and Keenan are in there they have been shimmering in and out of the house. I also liked the girl that Isaiah's mother picked for him turns out she has a mate and is not planning on going through with the wedding and it makes Isaiah realize that he has to tell his mother who was not happy about it. This was a good read. This book was well written like the rest of the books in this series the book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling.

The last Whitedell Pride book, Nysys, pretty much brought to a close the original story arc of this series. The head of the Glass Research Company had been taken down and imprisoned and the shifters were being rescued from the labs that had experimented on them. There were only a few loose ends left to tie up, and one of those was mercenary John Smith, who for the last year had been held by the shifters after he kidnapped Jamie for the Company right back in the first book. John was desperate for money when he took the job to kidnap Jamie. He is a human who was taught that shifters were nothing but rabid beasts, however over the year that he was imprisoned by the Pride, imprisoned in a comfy cabin mind you, he got to meet plenty of shifters and discovered that there was nothing beast-like about them. Alpha Dominic has decided that it’s time to release John, who he believes is truly a good man.

Isaiah has suspected for the past year that the prisoner the Alpha had locked in the cabin was his mate, and he wasn’t sure how he felt about it. The man had kidnapped Jamie for that horrible company, and besides Isaiah couldn’t mate a man and stay at Whitedell even if he wanted to. He’s meant to be the next alpha of his fox skulk and his domineering mother already has his bride lined up. The most Isaiah can offer John is the chance to be fuckbuddies, though his fox is really not happy with that arrangement.

This book was almost filler between one story arc and the next, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t as good as the other stories in the series. We get some hints that tattooed hunters are going to play an important role in the continuation of the Whitedell books, though the author gives little away in this story. Isaiah (the book, not the fox) concentrates more on what’s happening with the characters within the pride house, rather than dealing too much with outside forces. John especially, is surprisingly endearing. I’ve liked him from the start but this book showed us his sweet side. The scene when he decorates Isaiah’s property before the fox leaves the pride was absolutely adorable. I assumed Isaiah, the cute little fox, would be the adorable character but instead it was the big, tough human.

Of course it wouldn’t be a Whitedell Pride story if Nysys and Keenan didn’t attempt to steal the show, and they certainly make their presence known here.

I’m excited to see where this new direction will take the series.

And of course…don’t try to read these books out of sequence.

Mate denial

That's bizarre: Jayden and Isaiah had a whole talk about John starting on page one and now he says, look! It's the guy who blah blah like he hasn't thought about him in ages.

His mom's an alpha!! She doesn't want to be but she is!! Oh well, she's awful, of course as women usually are in these sorts of shifter series. Oh but his sister's okay.

It's really good that John isn't just suddenly okay with dating a shifter, that he's unsure. It takes a long time for deep-seated prejudices to be erased.

So his sister Talia but he still has to protect his sisters when danger comes?

Wow, almost near the end before the first sex scene!! Way to go, letting it be logical! I like the sex but usually it's too much and often feels like it's inserted just to have it there.

Nysus and Keenan are both annoying and hilarious.

Wow, an HFN ending. Not sure how I feel about that.

Summary:

The difficulties between Isaiah and John stemmed from John's association with the Glass Research Company where John was instructed to kidnap Jamie, one of the mates. John spent the last year confined to a pack cottage after he helped them fight against the company. Isaiah's job a teck support allowed him to keep his eyes on John, but his interest was of a more personal nature considering John was his mate. This book had the potential for an incredible story, but somehow felt more superficial than the earlier books. Isaiah's story if fleshed out would have enhanced the plot, but instead it was just there. The growing feelings between John and Isaiah was nice, but in the end they still had yet to complete their mating leaving the reader wondering if that part of the story is yet to come. Overall I enjoyed the book, but was left with the feeling that it wasn't completely finished.

Reviewed for Prism Book Alliance

After reading 13 books in the Whitedell series and 5 in the Gillham series, my mind is a little foggy. I love these books. If you read my back reviews of this series, you will see that was not always the case. It took me about 7 or 8 books to fall completely for these characters. However, now I eagerly await each new installment.
