Decades ago, a being known as the Giant of Light joined together with Shin Hayata of the Science Special Search Party to save Earth from an invasion of terrifying monsters called Kaiju. Now, many years later, those dark days are fading into memory, and the world is at peace. But in the shadows a new threat is growing, a danger that can only be faced by a new kind of hero—a new kind of Ultraman…
Pop idol Rena Sayama takes center stage as her concert kicks off, but the alien Adad arrives and announces his intent to kill her along with everyone in the audience! Shinjiro and Moroboshi aren’t about to let that happen, and the crowd is stunned at the appearance of not one but two figures in Ultraman suits. Then Bemular drops in…
More of the same. Choppy world building and story with cool fights.
World: The art is the best part of the series. The newest one that shows up looks cool. The world building is still very much in fits and starts and slow. The stage is merely set for the fights but the logic of the world is a stretch.
Story: Overly complicated and choppy. The emotions rang hollow but the fights were awesome. This is not a series for story that's for sure. The pieces of the story still moves insanely slow but the cast of characters is growing even if there's not enough time for proper character development oh well.
Characters: Still very basic and now there's even more. I need more quiet moments for world and character but I can't argue with the fights. New characters again...
There is a new sheriff in town - but does UM believe in the same 'law' that he does? A very nice take on the old UM series. I grew up watching UM and still remember how all my friends had their favorite monsters from the series. This is a very edgy update on UM; I really like the monsters - they are very powerful and bloodthirsty!
Well we wrapped things up with the serial murder situation and now we're dealing with yet another Ultraman showing up. I'm glad I finally finished these volumes I had from the library but I'm not sure I'll bother with looking for future volumes. The art style is fine but I feel like it would be better/easier to follow in color. There's not quite enough to get me attached to the characters since I have no nostalgia for the original.
Pretty good action, but the main plot is really murky. I don't like feeling like I don't know where the story is going (or if it's going anywhere at all). Plus they're just adding new characters, but it's not clear how everything fits together. Good action, but random.
Yep, I'll confess that it felt good to catch partially up on what I missed by reading volume 7 before this (still looking to read volume 6 which my guess is more action/fight oriented than this installment).
I liked that they are bringing in bits from the original television series, both Ultraman and Ultra 7, in a manner that works, but I swear the Star Council, and its characters are taken from the old Space Giant movies (showing my age even as a 10 year old me give a fan boy squee).
This is one of the few times I've come across a Japanese series which does the super hero, with a little bit of science fiction added, well. That's not a criticism. Some countries do things better than others, and that adds diversity to the overall media experience and an opportunity to see things from a different cultural perspective (I mean does anyone do messed up, depressed noir/investigator series than the Scandinavian countries right now?).
This is a plot heavy volume. We finally get some answers, but those only lead to more questions. And a new misterious Ultraman shows up - Ultraman Ace. He knows Shinjiro's identity, but we still can't be sure if he is ally or not. It's a fine volume, but maybe they should've distributed the plot dump a bit better between this and the last/next volumes.
Eeh. It's starting to lose me. The fights were difficult enough to follow with just Ultraman himself, but now with four total characters with the exosuit look...plus, the adult cast is starting to pick up intrigue-wise, but they aren't terribly interesting. There are only two more volumes before I'm caught up, so I'll see this through.
