Magic, leader of the Ouachita clan of big cats, has had his fair share of missteps when it comes to females. One that ultimately cost him his mate, leaving him wounded inside and unable to heal. Now he’s determined to keep his clan from making the same mistakes. No mating is the rule they agreed on, but one-by-one they want to break it. None of them know the risks like he does, and he won’t watch his clan go down that road without a fight.
Fun loving city girl and longtime friend of the clan, Josie, is always down for a good time. She can’t understand a man as hard and buttoned up as Magic, and she’s determined to find a way to help him live up to his name. When she comes to the lodge to help her best girlfriend work through some private problems, she finds herself wanting more from the big, snarly cat who never takes her seriously. But a secret ten years in the making throws Josie into a world of harsh realities, where she is somehow mated to the one panther shifter hell-bent on staying single.
Torn by the past and an undeniable connection to a female he doesn’t want to lose, this is Magic’s last chance to get it right. But can he let go of history long enough to see how wonderful the future for the Ouachitas could be?

I really wanted to like this but there was one thought going through my mind that stopped me and that was:
It will always be Mandi’s cat.
And the whole double standard only-men-can-cheat-but-it’s-not-cheating-because-men-said-so bullshit doesn’t work for me. And the this clan choosing to be faithful makes me think they weren’t always so no...not feeling it. I’m gonna try another series from this author though (one without cats) because I actually liked the story...just hated elements of it (hence no rating).

I liked the first book in this series more. I think mainly because I tired of the hero pushing the heroine away. Also, I tend to not be a fan of romances where there is a dead mate, etc. (which this book has) It was still an ok read but not one Id likely recommend.
I knew this story would be hard, but I was not expecting what I got.
First, I really like this author's books. I think of them as light and fun shifter books. The Ouachita series was sure to not be as light and easy as the Dirt Track Dogs, just because of the history of the cats. However, I really liked the first two books and was really intrigued by Magic.
Taking on really hard subject matters is really difficult in any book, but in a fairly short shifter book? It seems like an uphill battle. What was delivered was an emotional read. It is not what I prefer to read in my shifter/mate stories, but I cannot deny the depth of the story delivered. That makes rating and reviewing complicated. My personal preferences may not agree with much of the plot, but I did not expect this to be a totally "safe" read for me. So my rating is based more on the quality of the story than my personal enjoyment. I do not do this often, but it feels right. (I did find the stuff with Josie's accident to be confusing in how it was told, but I eventually got it.)
Do NOT read the spoiler below unless you want to hear significant plot spoilers.
Plot: Magic is the leader of the Ouachita clan of big cat shifters. He's grumpy and surly, but with good reason (to an extent). He's instituted a rule that none of them can take a mate (there's a tradition that male cat shifters can't be faithful and he suffered a tragedy involving that tidbit and his mate, who is now dead). But now Josie's here, and she makes him want something more. For Josie's part, strange things are happening in her head, and they all seem to be related to Magic and his dead mate. But how can she even find out what's happening if Magic refuses to interact with her at all?
Character development: I didn't like this one as much as the first one in the series, I think because Magic was so incredibly grumpy and it took so long to see those feelings of true mates. He was meant to be grumpy, I know, but his surliness and refusal to even consider a way past what he knew was bordering on ridiculous. His idea was that the male shifters could not be faithful, rather than admitting that they did not want to be faithful. He was very mean to Josie in the process, and she was more understanding than she needed to be, in my opinion. I felt a little guilty, thinking so badly of him, because truly, losing a spouse must have been terrible, and he had suffered all that time. On the other hand, though, it was his fault - he could have stayed home with her instead of telling her he was going to cheat. On the other other hand, I think she might have had some mental issues that were separate from that incident. But also (lots of other hands here), that sort of society that sets up women with a true mate and then says they just have to accept that they will be cheated on is one that doesn't care about the well-being of their women. And Magic's solution of never taking a mate to solve that problem - it was like seeing a speck of dirt on the floor and blowing up the house to get rid of it. It hurt everyone in the process. He was such a jerk to everyone around him. So while I was happy for Josie and for Magic that they resolved their problems, it just seemed so idiotic that there were problems to begin with. And I'm not a huge fan of the dead mate/reincarnation trope. Nalini Singh did a good version with Dmitri and Honor (Archangel's Blade)
Magic is the leader of the Ouachita clan of cat shifters. After his mate died, he and his clan mates made a pact to never mate because of the inevitable pain the females suffered. He's a real hard-ass kind of guy who lost his sense of humor along with his mate. Josie is kind of flaky. Well, not really flaky as much as free-spirited. She lives for the moment because you never know if that moment will be your last. But she has spent 4 years settling into responsibility. But she has also been attracted to Magic, and loves to needle him when she goes to the lodge to visit her friend, Bethany. So the two must overcome their issues, especially Magic, in order to make a new path. Interesting people in a character-driven romance, and a different twist on the "I-want-you-but-I-can't-have-you" trope. Grammar and usage are good (meaning no glaring errors no one but a grammar geek would notice), and the narrative is smooth. An above average read.
Throughout this series I'll admit that Magic (sorry, HATE the name) became pretty much an ass to the point that his dialogue may have sounded like the adults on 'Charlie Brown' movies. Wauh wauh wauh... And this was while reading it! Then up comes his book. And as usual he's an ass. Quite honestly I think that the problem for me is in the premise of this series. If I can't believe that it will stand the test of time then it's usually something I stop reading. Yet here I am still reading these and giving them good reviews! I never claimed to be consistent! Anyway, I did really enjoy the unique story in this once we got past the annoying part. So, however confusing this review may be, always remember that you and I probably like entirely different things! Because of this I rarely, if ever, read reviews and definitely don't read a book or see a show based on someone else's opinion. Buying a TV? Yeah, I pay attention to reviews. That's what they're good for. 🐺
I was very excited for Magic's story- it did not disappoint. Heartbreaking and sexy- Josie was very likable and relatable. This would've been 5 stars, but the side plot with Beth put a damper on this for me a bit. I was constantly anxious as to how that was going to play out because I knew it wouldn't be good (it ended up playing out in a fairly good way). Beth's behavior was quite appalling, I thought- and it was also a bit ridiculous. Like, they've had a child already, it's only been a few years, they haven't tried anything to see if they have a fertility issue, just straight to "let me get my friend to be a surrogate to a shifter baby when she doesn't even know they're shifters. Also, my partner is against the idea, but I will do my best to manipulate him into agreeing with something so invasive." Though I will slowly be working my way through the author's back catalog because I love this series, I may skip Beth and Renner's story in whichever shifter series it's in.

TW: suicide Overall, it was OK. Definitely not my favorite; felt a little disjointed and I didn't like the MMC. I had a problem with the way that the hero treated his mate that died (tw: suicide, survivor's guilt) so had a hard time forgiving him so that this new mate could take her place. The fact that he knew how she felt and still acted against it by going out and faking cheating (seriously dude) felt unforgivable to me. And his feeling guilty only after driving her to suicide was beyond. For me that was when he was done as a hero/MC. His commitment to celibacy was not near enough and the fact that his messing up his relationship meant other's shouldn't have them either was selfish and self-centered. And all of this was worsened by the way the story made her to be in the storm/purgatory/limbo for all the years he was wallowing because she loved him and was feeling guilty (that whole time) about his driving her to suicide. No. I also did not like how breeder focused he was. It was creepy and not at all hot. Glad to see a heroine with a seizure disorder... but did not love that the book used the chronic illness of epilepsy by using seizures to further the plot instead of as appropriate and in depth representation of a person with epilepsy. Also, nice to see surrogacy discussed but didn't love that it just ended with an oops we got preggo no worries. Considering the deft hand Jameson had in other books with infertility (given they are written later I think) I found it very wanting.

Not my favorite couple. While I do like Josie a lot and love her spirit, I just didn't care for the story of how she was familiar to Magic. It was just out there and weird. I feel like it didn't really fit in with the universe. It does explain Magic's clan rules and reluctance to have a mate though. It was just an ok read for me. It could have been better. There's little character development and I just found the story strange.
He sure wasn't named for his personality. Although I liked Josie ( the Heroine) , Magic wasn't my favorite character. He had too many inconsistent personality traits.
I do think that this series has potential. My main issue is the incomplete world building. I would like more background about the human/shifter history. And more actual shifting. Feline and Dragon Paranormals are my favorites, so I will continue with the series.
Magic was determined to never mate again after losing his mate. But something about Josie made her feel like his. Josie had what she thought was a near death experience. Now she realizes exactly what if was. But will Magic see it. Great book in the series. Moving and emotional. Filled with wonderful characters.
Just awesome the story of Magic and Josie then throw in a ghost named Mandi what an idea. I love this and how love can speak from the grave. It's love at its greatest level and how an author can have this story inside of them just fabulous. A book you most definitely should read don't wait run to get this book you will be more than happy you did.
What an emotional rollercoaster of coming to terms with so many different aspects of living and dealing with death. Wonderfully written, and had an ease of flow that made reading enjoyable. I highly suggest reading the series in order, to get the full impact of the storyline. That said, it’s a great book on its own!! Off to the next book in the series!!!
As usual this was a wonderful addition to the series. It was different how Magic and Josie came together but it was beautiful. I’m glad we got to read Magic’s story. So far this is a great series and I recommend reading all of the books thus far. Until next time y’all happy reading.
Ow!!! How do you overcome this kind of trauma? I'm not surprised that Magic turned away from love the way he did - that is basic self defence. To open himself up again? Now that takes courage. Hurricane Josie is just the woman for Magic - that woman takes no prisoners! What an awesome couple! This reminds me of the romance of Nalini Singh's "Archangel's Blade" without the blood.
Not your usual shifter story. Magic had a mate but tradition said cheating was normal. Mandi couldn't handle the idea of him cheating so she committed suicide. Magic made his clan swear not to mate. Now he's got a second chance but will he take it?
I will give this two stars only because I like the author & she tried to tackle a hard back story for Magic in a short read. That said, I didn't like either of these characters when they have cameoed in previous books, and delving into their mindsets really didn't make me care for their HEA (Magic especially), or make me want to continue with the series.
I knew Magic's story was going to be epic and boy was I right. Magic was antagonistic twords Josie for the moment he met her. This book will definitely pull your heatstring with some amazing twists. ♡♡♡

Not as good as the first one but still a good book.
We are lucky readers this series is off to a great start. The characters are likeable and fun, the storyline is interesting, and the writing is good quality.
This book was so good that I read it in one night. Just couldn't put it down. It is well written and great characters. Makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next.
