Maya Connor was already embarrassed after a dare—and a shot of vodka—resulted in one seriously sexy kiss with an even sexier stranger. She had no idea that the man she made out with was hotel magnate and reputed playboy Jamie Sellers. Or that she would soon be working for him…
Maya won't let anything get in the way of her ambition. And she's determined to be taken seriously as she begins her career—and not give in to the heat that's constantly driving her to distraction. Lust, that's all it is. The more Maya and Jamie ignore it, the stronger it gets. But ending up in the boss's bed won't just be Maya's wickedest fantasies come to life…it'll be the end of her dreams.
J. Margot Critch writes steamy contemporary romance and romantic suspense. She graduated from Memorial University with a BA in Religious Studies and Folklore. She currently lives in St. John’s, Newfoundland, with her husband, Brian, and their two little fur buddies, Otis and Chibs. She spends equal amounts of time writing, listening to Jimmy Buffett music and looking out at the ocean, all the while trying to decide if she should have coffee or margaritas.
A girl's night out turns super sexy and super hot quite quickly when sensible introvert, Maya lock lips with a super gorgeous stranger. On a dare, Maya schmooze’s the sexy Jamie Sellers and let me tell you, the sparks between them could have melted steel—wow! I really enjoyed the storyline. It's fresh and sassy and the characters are realistically portrayed that it's hard to imagine this is J. Margot Critch's debut novel. Maya reminds me of me at the opening of chapter one. Her inward thoughts mirror mine. She's twenty-five with no experience when it comes to being a social butterfly. Jamie on the other hand is the polar opposite. Back in the day he had been wild and carefree. But now, he's a hardworking, reserved guy who the press just doesn't get. He has dark demons in his closet but that doesn't deter him from following his dreams. In fact, his past motivates him to be the best man that he can be. But now having Maya working for him tests his self-control. Things get intense when Jamie offers Maya a job as his assistant. It's all professional at first but Maya and Jamie secretly have wild thoughts for each other. Eventually they act on these thoughts and boy does the air turn hot between them! Every aspect of In the Boss’s Bed is pure reading pleasure. The writing is taut and incredibly passionate. Ms. Critch makes Maya and Jamie's journey a joy to read. There is witty dialogue, sharp inward thoughts, intense physical attraction between the hero and heroine, and also a supporting cast who add layer and depth to the story. I was hooked from the moment Maya acts on Abby's dare! Every scene from then on is a wild frenzied war between chemistry and brains clashing head on. All in all, every word of this passionate, dramatic and intense tryst made me a contented reader!
I was rather ambivalent about some things here. I started out really liking Maya - never a heroine spoke more to my heart with being an introvert and not really wanting to go out and being so quirky and what not. But I liked her less as the story goes on. She kisses nightclub mogul Jamie Sellers on a dare, sees him the next day and ends up being hired as his assistant. For his part, Jamie is smitten and is trying very carefully to balance his desire for Maya with his wanting her to be successful and have a good job experience. Jamie was damn near perfect, except for his stubborn pride. Maya was a bit of an emotional coward and as her friend continually tells her, sabotages her own relationships, finding reasons to end them before they get too deep. Well, she does a great job here.
Both Jamie and Maya finally do succumb to their attraction, and then they agree to be friends, and then they succumb again, then they're off and then they're on again. It's like whiplash with these two and most of the problems can be laid at Maya's feet. The whiplash I don't necessarily dislike, but Maya's response to pressure - running away and breaking Jamie's heart - was not cool. And then later believing lies about Jamie - again not cool. So it's Maya who ends things both times and hurts Jamie. Does she apologize? No, not really. She explains, but she never apologizes for hurting him. Their situation called for a serious grovel session. And because she's really at fault for both "off agains" I found it really hard to sympathize with her situation. Maybe if I hadn't been seeing how much Jamie was hurting I could have. This needed a longer, more drawn out ending to resolve this.
The steam factor here was a solid one and Jamie and Maya have a great chemistry when they're together. I'm a bit of a sucker for that work place romance and finding the balance between professional and unprofessional. So this was good for that. I also really liked secondary characters Abby and Trevor.

The book was an absolute perfection until I reached 99.9 % and as a result it can never be a five star to me . The plus ! The chemistry was good . The HEA was fantastic The characters were well developed and well described. The pace and plot of the story was excellent .And I felt engaged in the story for real ! And a absolutely round of applause to the author for not including cheating or mind games in this story because I refuse to pay for that type of crap. The minus or misses ! (That made it a 4 star . ) Author you left a serious cliffhanger here without realising it ! Wow 😠 And wonder but maybe in ten years when you update the cover like all other author and increase the price you may fix the cliffhanger with an epilogue. Where did they eventually settled down . Montreal or Vegas ? Who was the culprit that intrudes on their private moment? What are his hang ups . You hinted of them but you never really said what it was ? And what is with all this alcohol every other page is everyone A.A . P.S Anyway hott guy on cover . Otherwise it was a fantastic and sweet read . 😏
Rarely do I like the hero way more than the heroine but this is what happened. The beginning and meet cute was well done, their attraction and suppressed sexual tension was delicious ! It was steamy but once they got serious, things went downhill.
According to the author, a Blaze heroine was strong, and ironically Maya was not. She's ambitious career wise, but she ran away at the slightest obstacle. She gave up on Jamie not once but TWICE. He was totally justified in not laying it all out by professing his love for her first! Because when the going got tough, Maya protected herself FIRST. Always!
Her bestie called her out on her self sabotaging behaviour and luckily she acknowledged her faults and saved the relationship before it was too late.
I don't have confidence in their relationship in the long run though, so not what I want when I read a ROMANCE.
It all started with a dare. Maya went up to a guy in a bar on the dare of her friend and kissed the daylights out of him. She was embarrassed but enjoyed the kiss..Little did she know she would be seeing him the next day..Jamie ends up hiring her as his assistant..he thinks he probably shouldn't have but they work really well together..there are sparks that just jump though the more time they spend together..on a trip to Vegas they go with those sparks and it ends up a fire but on the day of announcing Jamie's new hotel they get thrown a curve ball and Maya runs...She is hurt and Jamie is too..can they work through everything and be together? Was a good read.
This sounded like just my sort of Blaze - hot, sexy and just a little bit naughty. Sex in the office? Yes, please!
I wasn’t disappointed as soon as I started to read - I just adored Maya. She was fun, feisty but also a card-carrying introvert and I felt an immediate kinship with her. Her first interactions with Jamie were cute, sexy and also very realistic. Apologising for kissing him was genius!
From the start I also really enjoyed the writing style. It was quirky and fresh - a unique voice that even made me laugh out loud at certain times.
But as time went on in the book, I started to seriously lose interest. It seemed like nothing much would happen or if it did, it was a little samey. Let’s be colleagues. No - let’s be lovers. We can’t - let’s try colleagues again. Et cetera. I also really don’t like when sweeping statements are made to show the passing of time. “The next two weeks were much the same…”
With those big gaps in the timeline of the story, I also felt that a lot of the chemistry was missing. Sure, their inner monologues told that they could barely keep their hands off each other but I wasn’t seeing much evidence of their connection. I even started to skim the sex scenes because of this and that’s not like me.
Once the affair came out the story got a little bit interesting again but by that time I felt Maya had changed into a person I didn’t recognise or even like. Some random tells you she’s been sleeping with your man and while you don’t really believe it or even pitch a fit, you still tell him to get out of your life. What?
As other reviewers have really liked this book, I suppose it’s just horses for courses. It’s not one I took a great liking to but I will read more of J. Margot Critch’s books because I can see that if the story grabs me, I’ll really like her writing. Just 2 stars from me for this one, though.
When I read romance novels I tend to gravitate toward historical or paranormal genres not contemporary but this one was still a decent, entertaining read.
"Maya’s determination and independence are qualities that will make the reader sit up and take notice. Everything in Critch’s romance points to lasting love" (4 1/2 stars OP PICK! @ RT Book Reviews).
I enjoyed this book! The characters were likable and relatable. The storyline was a little drawn out at times, but still held my interest the whole way through. This story was peppered with many steamy scenes, that kept me breathless and wanting more. Very well done!
