Boerke aka Dickie #1-5

Le Petit Dickie Illustré : Oeuvres complètes 2001-2011

Rate this book

Pieter De Poortere (1976) made his debut in 2001 with ‘Boerke’ (Dickie) and immediately won the prize for the best Dutch-language comic book of the year. Four Dickie-albums have appeared since, and the Dickie-comic strip is published in various Flemish and French papers. The combination of cynical jokes and an innocent style forms a distinct personal signature.

D.L. June 2012 = "Seconde édition" = 35,50 €

Page 215 is as poignantly wise and philo-analytically stimulating as any one-pager anywhere! I'll call it "literature" due to it's not being a "gag" or even really "humor"- it just uses it's action as a joke while being pan-relatable without fluff or extremity.
->The store sign happens to render the same in English- but you needn't have ever even encountered reading any language to get what I'll term the "four-dimensionality" of the play on how the rich care for the poor, adorably starring Dickie sans domicile.

I love Poortere's non-words comic style, it keeps your mind into vigilance while "reading" - in fact you need more effort to understand his jokes than comic strips with text. His humour is dark but very clever!

I was very excited with his work when discovered it, but I would recommend his more recent works as personally I found them more entertaining.

A collection of De Poortere's popular one-page graphic stories about "Boerke" ("Wee farmer") or sometimes his cousin "Hoerke" ("Wee whore") who endure the craziness of the universe, usually dying in some all too plausible way at the end. Not really for me; too much punching down, rather than punching up, and an attitude of depressed fatalism leading nowhere very much.
