The Spider and the Tapestries

Louise Bourgeois' tapestry and needlepoint work deals with reparation in both a literal and metaphorical sense. In many of the works, fragmented tapestries are pieced together and repaired to create new sculptural forms. The recurring practices of weaving, stitching and mending express Bourgeois' identification with her childhood and the family business of tapestry restoration. Coupled with the medium of tapestry, Bourgeois' recurring motif of the spider symbolizes her mother, a weaver, and fully explores the complex relationship between mother and child. This publication includes archival photographs and facsimile documents from the Bourgeois family archive, as well as excerpts from the artist's psychoanalytical writings.

About the author

Louise Joséphine Bourgeois was a French-American artist. Although she is best known for her large-scale sculpture and installation art, Bourgeois was also a prolific painter and print-maker. She explored a variety of themes over the course of her long career including domesticity and the family, sexuality and the body, as well as death and the unconscious. These themes connect to events from her childhood which she considered to be a therapeutic process. Although Bourgeois exhibited with the Abstract Expressionists and her work has much in common with Surrealism and Feminist art, she was not formally affiliated with a particular artistic movement.

Ein außergewöhnliches Buch einer ausdrucksvolle Künstlerin.
Ihre Stoffskulpturen vermögen zu verblüffen. Es gibt Türme, Köpfe, ein weiteres häufiges Motiv sind große Spinnen. Das könnte gruselig sein, ist es aber nicht, denn die Spinnen wirken positiv und schützend. Siehe zum Beispiel Lady in Waiting.
Auch Garn findet da Einsatz als Spinnweben

Erwähnenswert auch „When I was young“. Viele weitere Werke sind leider ohne Titel.

Louise Bourgeois ist eine 1911 in Paris geborene Künstlerin, die in ihrer Jugend familiäre Probleme erlebte, zum Beispiel Ablehnung durch den Vater. Das hat anscheinend ihrem Werk eine psychologische Note verleiht. Ich denke aber, dass das dieses Buch nicht überbestimmt.
Manches wirkt leicht surrealistisch und es gibt auch bedrohliches wie Passage dangeroux.

Es ist ein schönes Buch, bei dem man aus dem Bestaunen nicht herauskommt.
