HISTORICAL SENSATION
Story of the Gallic War a Hoax?
(Rome) As has been communicated to us from well informed sources the history of the Gallic War most likely must be rewritten. It seems like the author C.J.Caesar (✝55) omitted a whole chapter when he published his book De Bello Gallico !
In this chapter, which carries the number XXIV and is titled "Setbacks in the Fight against the Indomitable Gauls in Armorica", the years of unsuccessful fight of the Roman legions against the inhabitants of a small Gallic village is described.
That this fact is now known we owe a whistle blower who calls himself Polemix, and who we could identify as Julian A. (44) currently resident of the Ecuadoran embassy in London, England. According to his own statements Polemix managed to get hold of the papyrus scroll #XXIV and brought it to the aforementioned small Gallic village from where the text was further distributed "mouth-to-ear"...full story here...

Caesar writes his memoirs but is talked out of including the chapter on his greatest failure: the village of crazy indomitable Gauls that holds out against the Romans! Nevertheless, the scroll is leaked and Caesar sends his men to find it before its contents are revealed to the world and he is humiliated. Except the missing scroll has made its way to Asterix and Obelix…
Like all iconic characters, Asterix and co. continue to have adventures after their creators have died/retired. The new creative team of writer Jean-Yves Ferri and artist Didier Conrad continue their run with this second book, The Missing Scroll, though unfortunately it’s not as good as their first, Asterix and the Picts, and that wasn’t very good to begin with!
There’s a contemporary flavour to the book with its premise of releasing information to the public, referencing Wikileaks - the Lutetian journalist, Confoundtheirpolitix, who has the scroll is a dead ringer for Julian Assange. That’s about it for the satire though and it doesn’t translate into the best story either.
Without dwelling too much on the flaws of the flimsy premise (I know, it’s a kid’s book), the narrative’s not very interesting in itself. Asterix and Obelix stand about until Getafix gives them an even flimsier goal to close out the book and then it’s just counting the pages until we get there. There’s no tension, the Romans remain the jokes they are, and then it’s over. The horoscope subplot was even weaker and what humour there was failed to hit the spot.
It’s remarkable how similar Didier Conrad’s art is to Albert Uderzo’s, and it definitely feels like an Asterix comic but The Missing Scroll is also not nearly as good as the canonical first 24 volumes by Goscinny/Uderzo. I’m a lifelong Asterix fan but I was disappointed with this uninspired and boring effort.

Buy a new Astérix is somewhere a regressive attitude. A memory of an happiness time. And Goscinny died. Goscinny, the soul of Astérix. He had worked at Mad Magazine. A monumental sense of humour, a graduated mechanics of gag, a real Latin culture. Since his death, we were a little orphan. We sought him in each new album.
And Uderzo decided to give up. Thus another team. The feature is slightly stiffer but it is rather well. Nostalgia should be given up. Times they are changing as said Dylan.

Skandal! Caesar hat bei seinem epochalen Werk "Commentarii De Bello Gallico", das wir alle in Latein durchackern mussten, ein wesentliches Kapitel unterschlagen: Nämlich jenes zum Dorf von Asterix und Obelix, das eben nicht erobert werden konnte.
Wundervoll vergnüglich wurden im neuen Asterix historische Ereignisse in die Welt der Gallier eingearbeitet und moderne Aspekte auf die alten Sitten adaptiert. Da gibt es einen Whistleblower namens Polemix, mit seinem nubischen Schreibgehilfen (Mammamia diese Nubier werden wirklich total politisch inkorrekt dargestellt - so herrlich subversiv können wirlich nur die Franzosen sein). Großartige satirische Details wurden außerdem in die Geschichte eingeflochten, sogar die deutsche Printmedienlandschaft wurde in der Übersetzung berücksichtigt und irgendwie hatte ich das Gefühl, ständig über Analogien zu Twitter zu stolpern. :D
Das einzige, das mich in meiner Euphorie stört und verhindert, dass ich diesmal die volle Sternezahl verleihe, ist der asterixspezifische Plot, der aber einen eingefleischten Fan überhaupt nicht stören dürfte. Immer reisen Asterix und Obelix wahlweise auch mit Miraculix irgendwohin, ....Verwicklungen am Reiseort, im Dorf und bei den Römern...., letztendlich kommt dann der Zaubertrank zum Einsatz, und die verzwickten Situation ist gerettet. Das finde ich ein bisschen langweilig, aber nur ein kleines bisschen.
Fazit: Ein grandioser Comic zum Thema Medien und Kommunikation. Stürmt in die nächste Trafik und holt Euch unbedingt den neuesten heißen Scheiß aus Gallien, es lohnt sich!

Σχετικά αξιοπρεπής προσπάθεια που σαφώς δεν έβγαλε παρά ελάχιστο γέλιο και δεν φτάνει ούτε κατά διάνοια την σπιρτάδα του Γκοσινί, είναι όμως πολύ καλύτερο από τις αθλιότητες που κυκλοφόρησε ο Ουντερζό μόνος του. Το σχέδιο προσωπικά μου άρεσε πολύ, είχε τα gags του αλλά και πρόσεξε τις λεπτομέρειες κάνοντας το σύμπαν των Γαλατών πιο "πλήρες" σε επίπεδο πληροφορίας (π.χ. το δεντρόσπιτο του γεροδρουίδη στο δάσος των Καρνούτων και τα μουσικά όργανα του Κακοφωνίξ) και αναβαθμίζουν κάπως τα επαναλαμβανόμενα μοτίβα των σχεδίων του Ουντερζό, από τις όμοιες καλύβες και περιβάλλοντα μέχρι τις στολές και τα ρούχα.
Εκδοτικά, το χαρτί ήταν κακής ποιότητας και δεν έλειψαν και τα λάθη στα κείμενα, μαρτυρώντας βιασύνη εκ μέρος της Μαμούθ.

For the 36th time Asterix the Gaul & his best friend Obelix have an adventure that have their origin in modern themes. Roman Emperor Julius Ceasar writes his memoirs but is advised for political reasons to leave out the chapter about his failures with a certain Gaul village. This left out chapter gets stolen and winds up in a certain village which leads to another adventure involving all usual suspects and the usual people get their behind kicked.
One would expect that a new Asterix the Gaul comic without any input without the original writer & illustrator would be somewhat lame. But it really isn't the case the story is fresh and funny with themes that come from our times. Snowdon will be pleased. I looked forward to this release and was not disappointed. Long live Asterix & friends, and may they continue to release such quality stories.

Der letzte Asterix-Band, den ich gelesen habe, war noch von Uderzo & Goscinny, und es muss so ungefähr das Jahr 1973 gewesen sein. Empfehlungen und das Medienecho haben mich nun bewogen, den jüngsten Band DER PAPYRUS DES CÄSAR zu lesen, für den ein neues kreatives Team verantwortlich zeichnet.
Und die Überraschung war groß: außer dass sich das Lettering geändert hat, merkt man diesem 36. Asterix kaum an, dass Jahrzehnte vergangen sind. Zeichnerisch ist alles beim Alten geblieben und die Figuren haben sich nicht weiter entwickelt. Es soll immer noch gelacht werden, und zwar immer noch über genau die selben Witze wie damals. Never touch a running system, der Verlag weiß, was er an Asterix hat, und die Leser werden es größtenteils wohl danken und als Verläßlichkeit verstehen.
Ein bißchen traurig hat es mich gestimmt, dieses Abenteuer, das mich nicht besonders gut unterhalten hat; ich war weder von der Handlung gefesselt noch konnte ich wirklich lachen.
Da sich das Comic nur wenig verändert hat, muss es an mir liegen, dass die frühere Begeisterung ausbleibt. Die Zeiten haben sich geändert, Asterix nicht. Leider nicht. Daran ändern auch die Anspielungen an das (fast) aktuelle Thema Whistleblowing nichts.

Après une série d'épisodes pas toujours bien inspirés du dessinateur Uderzo, il semble que la saga des irréductibles gaulois renoue un peu avec la verve qui avait fait son succès. Un des grands ressorts, se moquer des stéréotypes nationaux, arrive à bout de course, faute de nouvelles contrées à explorer, mais il reste encore la veine satirique, les calembours, fausses étymologies et autres anachronismes pour donner de la matière à cet album plutôt bien ficelé. Les réseaux sociaux, internet et les théories du complot sont à l'honneur dans ce scénario, que le druide Panoramix résume ainsi: "Souvent, les gens ont tendance à croire ce qui est écrit. C'est un phénomène étrange!". Ça me fait penser que si j'ai lu la Guerre des Gaules, il me reste encore à lire le reste des écrits de Caïus Julius César!

Μου αρεσε:Που προσπαθησαν να μεινουν πιστοι στην αρχικη ιδεα του αστεριξ και δεν ακολουθησαν την λογικη των αλμπουμ που εβγαζε κατα καιρους μονος του ο Ουντερζο.
Δεν μου αρεσε. Η φαση με τα περιστερια και τα απειρα υπονοουμενα για το τουιτερ. Ελεος.
Οι λεξεις που χρησιμοποιουσε ο ρεπορτερ. Οπως μεταφραστηκαν ηταν κουραστικες.
Οι χαρακτηρες ηταν λιγο πιο επιφανειακοι απο αυτους που εχουμε αγαπησει.
Αντε το επομενο να ειναι καλυτερο!!

Now we're talking. Better than this team's first Asterix outing, Asterix And The Picts, and the best new Asterix album since The Flying Carpet. Eschewing the whimsy of the last few Uderzo-created titles, Ferri and Conrad take us back to the spirit of classics like The Bannquet and The Secret Weapon, pitting the little village against the machinations of the mighty Roman Empire. There is a topical note in the Wikileaks-like premise, but comedy and adventure are favoured over satire as the plot unfolds.
I can't wait for the next one!

Now I really want to reread the old ones again. This one was better than the other newer ones if you ask me but still hasn't exactly the same quality as the ones by the original writer and illustrator.

The second outing for the Ferri/Conrad partnership sees Julius Caeser write his famous book about the Gallic Wars! However, he's told to edit out the part about the Village of Indomitable Gauls and instead claim he conquered all of Gaul...certain parties are keen to preserve the real story. Typical shennanigans ensue, complete with long-suffering legionaries, arguments between villagers, pirates, violence, puns, irony and irreverence. The whimsy is dialled down compared even to its immediate predecessor, let alone the extravagances of Uderzo's authorial efforts but for me the best Asterix books take our heroes to a foreign country and take the mick out of the cultural stereo-types. Here the Gauls never leave, well, Gaul. Still, it's an at least averagely good entry in the series and that average is pretty high quality!

Die frühen Asterix-Bände habe ich geliebt, war jedoch von einigen Bänden nach dem Tode Goscinnys so enttäuscht, dass ich die Reihe nicht mehr verfolgt habe. Aber die neuen Autoren / Zeichner machen vieles richtig, dieser Band kommt schon fast wieder an die alten Hefte heran. :-)

J'adore lire les bandes dessinées d'Astérix. Avec mon père qui a toute la collection, c'était sûr qu'il allait acheté ce nouveau tome dans la série et j'en profite pour le lire.
Et puisque je suis malade aujourd'hui et que la lecture d'un livre serait trop pour ma tête qui ne veut pas vraiment se concentré, cette lecture m'apparaissait comme un bon compromis.
J'ai bien aimé ce tome et de retomber dans les aventures d'Astérix et Obélix. Ça me redonne le goût de relire toutes les BDs de la collection, mais hélas, le temps me manque et j'ai beaucoup d'autres livres à lire.
Je dois simplement admettre que le style à quelque peu changé des originaux et c'est normal puisque les personnes ont changés, mais j'ai quand même apprécié et j'espère voir de nouvelles bandes dessinées dans le futur.
Et puisque je suis malade aujourd'hui et que la lecture d'un livre serait trop pour ma tête qui ne veut pas vraiment se concentré, cette lecture m'apparaissait comme un bon compromis.

Representa uma subida de qualidade muito grande em relação ao anterior e pode-se comparar com o que a dupla Uderzo-Goscinny publicou sem ficar envergonhado.
Consegue equilibrar aquela dimensão de brincar com a lingua e abordar assuntos sérios que tanto apaixonam os apreciadores do original.
Não consegue, penso, criar ainda personagens e tiradas imortais, mas demonstra uma evolução no sentido certo.

O Papiro de César procura uma sátira à modernidade, apesar de manter uma base histórica, como é tradição. Gira em torno do livro A Guerra das Gálias, em que Júlio Cesar conta a história das suas campanhas na Gália, mas sobretudo de um capítulo suprimido que revela o segredo que o imperador procura esconder: César não conquistou toda a Gália. Um conhecido boateiro gaulês, de seu nome Gerapolémix, vai fazer chegar esse capítulo aos irredutíveis gauleses da Armórica, para que estes possam repor toda a verdade.
É uma leitura divertida, que mantém a sua essência: os trocadilhos, os momentos provocatórios entre o peixeiro e o ferreiro (Ordenalfabetix e Automatix), as críticas pegadas da mulher do chefe da aldeia e como este procura contradizê-la mesmo sabendo que ela tem razão, as demonstrações de "talento" do bardo Cacofonix e, claro, a gula de Obélix por javalis. Mas a nova inspiração revela-se bem contemporânea: o controlo de informação.
Ainda que Didier e Conrad se mostrem fiéis a Goscinny e Uderzo, quer em espírito, quer em estilo do desenho (que, diga-se, é irrepreensível), sinto que, tal como no álbum anterior, continua a faltar qualquer coisa: faltam-lhe as tiradas únicas dos seus criadores. Apesar de tudo, é muito bom voltar a ler novas aventuras de Asterix, até porque a tira final deste álbum não nos poderia deixar mais nostálgicos, prestando um verdadeiro tributo aos inigualáveis Goscinny e Uderzo.

O regresso das grandes aventuras de Astérix, com tudo o que o mestre Goscinny deu à série (e que Uderzo não conseguiu continuar com o mesmo brilhantismo): a sátira à modernidade, um humor cáustico e um divertimento incrível. Os gauleses estão mesmo de volta - e Didier e Conrad mostram que são os dignos herdeiros do património Astérixiano.

Les deux derniers albums d'Astérix sont de loin les meilleurs depuis la mort de Goscinny en 1977. Jean-Yves Ferri est un excellent scénariste qui a su retrouver en grande partie l'âme de la BD telle que créée par Goscinny.

Au prix où coûtent les BD de nos jours, ils pourraient quand même faire des efforts sur le scénario parce que bon, ce n'est pas le dessin et la couleur qui doivent leur prendre du temps dans un Astérix quand même. Bref, une BD pas top.

Cela faisait longtemps que je n’avais pas ouvert une BD d’Astérix et Obélix. Et dès la 6ème page, je savais que c’était le dernier que je lisais.
Cet ouvrage date de 2015, mais les dessins n’ont pas évolué. Ça ne dérange apparemment pas les créateurs ni le dessinateur de garder cette vision dépassée et caricaturale des personnes Noires, qui dans la BD sont dotées de lèvres charnues et d’un accent prononcé. Selon certains, il s’agirait là d’un "dispositif comique qui s’appliquerait à tous les personnages étrangers représentés". Mais qui cela fait-il rire ?
Et dire que ces ouvrages se retrouvent entre les mains d’enfants...

Ich fand diesen modernen Bezug mit Wikileaks und Assange etwas merkwürdig. Bisschen Gesellschaftskritik darf ja sein, aber irgendwie war mir das zu "modern" und zu sehr mit dem Holzhammer, bisschen subtiler kann das schon sein. Schön fand ich, wie der Stil beibehalten wurden, auch ohne Uderzo/Goscinny, besonders zeichnerisch sehe ich keinen Unterschied zu den guten alten Bänden. Dennoch würde ich mir fürs nächste Mal insgesamt eine klassischere Geschichte wünschen, ohne Wikileaks oder Aliens und so.
