Hachiman Hikigaya is a cynic. He believes "youth" is a crock-a sucker's game, an illusion woven from failure and hypocrisy. Unsurprisingly, he's not the most popular guy. Meanwhile, there's Yukino Yukinoshita-brilliant, beautiful, and chillier than winter in Antarctica. Would you believe she's not exactly beloved by her classmates either? The unlikely pair gets forced into a club dedicated to helping solve their fellow students' problems. But will an ice queen and a screwup really be able to help anybody?
This is a manga adaptation of a Japanese novel. I read the first two volumes and though it is not bad, I find it pretty bland and unoriginal. Basically, a bunch of loners and outsiders are thrust together into a school club to help them learn how to make friends, sort of like Haganai: I Don't Have Many Friends #1. The characters are pretty stock: the romantically-oblivious goodhearted boy with bad luck, the tsundere bitchy rich girl who is good at everything except making friends, the earnest bubbly girl with a secret crush, the fat geek boy. Three of the characters are linked by an accident in the recent past, though they are not all fully aware of the connection yet. The concept that their Service Club helps others allows the easy introduction of new characters and storylines. I wouldn't actively seek out volume 3, but I might pick it up if I stumbled upon it sitting on the shelf at my local library.
Read the first two and a half chapters, but didn't find this engaging. Hard to follow, not clear who is saying what and when I did understand there seemed to be a lot of repetition. Also relied on a lot of pop culture references and Japanese stereotypes that I didn't know and couldn't relate to.
Since this is a tie-in to a novel I have yet to read, I would like to sum up my rating of 4/5 briefly: The art style is great in a way that it represents the harshness of high school while helping bring to light the author's wish of expressing comedy in what is initially sad reality. Reading this helped me visualize not only the characters themselves but which direction they're headed in the story. However, I don't blame the mangaka as much as the author for parts that felt they were dragging momentarily. And I'm also worried that the manga will follow other tie-in issues, where little details or big changes from the story's narrative will pop up in the near future. But I'm looking forward to reading the next volume soon, nonetheless. I'd definitely recommend for those who want a slightly comical high-school slice-of-life.
Good job kalau ini.
Maybe 3.5, it was a rocky start of an unlikeable main character calling people "normies" and thinking everyone who enjoys life is just lying so the book didn't make the best first impression. The bluntness of the honest characters is contrasted nicely by their dishonesty with themselves regarding their desire for friendship. It seemed like they were moving toward making friends though so I look forward to where things go in the next volume. It's likely that they're all connected by that car accident at the beginning of first year but I imagine they'll take their time revealing that.
This was an amazing book. The protagonist is a self proclaimed loner who's views on the world and society are a lot different than your normal protagonist. However underneath his negative views on the modern "food chain" of modern society he wants to help people, even if his methods are unorthodox and in some peoples eyes, crule.
I would recommend this book to anyone in the teenage years who is looking for a different type of protagonist other than the stereotypical white knight protagonist like Harry Potter or superman.

Might seem weird to rate something 4 stars that I don't remember super well. I finished the last third of this volume, which I started probably more than 6 months ago. I reread the first several pages again and remember liking the premise and the characters, and I did enjoy the last third, haha. I just have way to many other things to read to read this over again, so there you have it. Maybe I'll watch the anime sometime.
What a way to start up a series! And I love it! I’m here for the character development for all of these characters and for the friendships I’m sure they’re going to make. The art isn’t cutesy or anything (this definitely isn’t a shojo) but I love how “wordy” this series can be. I love that Hachiman narrates the story for us. This reminds me of the Toradora manga so much!
One of the worst stories I've read in a while. Couldn't even finish it.
It's about 2 students that are outcast, kind of, that are in a club together to help other students with their problems. It had potential to be funny, but it's not. It's pretty pointless actually.
I probably won't continue with this series, as I'm not all that fond of the main character and his penchant for calling girls bitches and other such names. I do like some of the side characters though, so I'm not completely ruling it out.
This one was so entertaining! Maybe because it's so relatable? Like, socially awkwardness, yeah, I know what that feels like. The characters are highly amusing and I'm really liking the plot of the story so far. The ending did kinda leave us on a cliffhanger of some sorts, so I hope it won't be too far in the future 'til I'll be able to pick op volume 2.
