From the pages of Secret Wars comes Old Man Logan, but not even the golden pen of Jeff Lemire and great art by Andrea Sorrentino, can lift this to any serious heights, despite the character being such an obvious one to create some great new mythologies around! 6 out of 12, Three Stars.

Old Man Logan wakes up naked in the 616 universe with no memory of where he is, or how he got there. So. Basically, for him...it's a Tuesday.

description

Instead of sensibly realizing that he's been transported to a different earth, he assumes that he's traveled to his past and been give a second chance of sorts.
Yay! Now he can stop his dystopian future from ever happening!
So, like an unhinged Santa, Logan is making his list and checking it twice...

description

Ok. His list of Who To Kill leads to a confrontation with the new (and Totally Awesome) Hulk.
But wait? Who's this new kid? Where's Banner?!
I'm asking myself the same question, old guy...
Of course, it's not his style to ask questions first, so Cho is forced to gently break all of his ribs, and send him packing with a little internal bleeding. Confused, Logan goes to lick his wounds at his old friend Hawkeye's house.
Spider Buggy Bros for life!

description

Except...Hawkeye.

description

More hijinks ensue as Wolverine insists that he needs to kill off people that no longer exist, and eventually Old Man Captain America steps in to slap some sense into him.

description

It didn't blow me away, but I thought it was a pretty decent start for this title, and I'm definitely interested in reading more.

Just when I’d written off Jeff Lemire he comes out with a really good superhero comic - and of course it’d be for a fellow Canuck like Wolverine!

Old Man Logan is the best Wolverine story bar none. Originally a standalone (and I know this is a DC term but it’s fitting) “Elseworlds”-type story by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven from 2008-09, the character and world was revisited in a Brian Bendis-written miniseries during last year’s Secret Wars and now it’s an ongoing.

Not realising he’s in a different universe, Old Man Logan thinks he’s time-travelled to before the world became a wasteland and he’s been given a second chance to save everyone: the heroes and his family. He just has to kill the Incredible Hulk…!

Like a lot of his books, Millar’s Old Man Logan was really, really dark and, surprisingly, Lemire’s kept the tone here - this is one of the darkest non-MAX Marvel books I’ve read. Logan is a broken, desperate man willing to do brutal things to keep what he thinks is his future from happening.

Despite colourful cameos from Amadeus Cho Hulk, Kate Bishop Hawkeye and Old Man Cap (and I love that we got to see these two old geezer versions of the characters meeting), the tone of the story is very grim. Andrea Sorrentino’s art certainly helps maintain that atmosphere!

I really enjoyed Sorrentino’s work in this one. There are some really cool splash pages like the brilliant Dark Knight Returns homage, the fight scene framed in a Canadian maple leaf, and the flashbacks showing the ruined world with downed helicarriers were awesome. It’s weird how he’s modelled Logan’s face on his own though…

Partly because I love Millar/McNiven’s original and partly because I love Mad Max, but I really liked that Lemire spent some time in Old Man Logan’s world via the flashbacks because it’s such an interesting place to be explored further. I love that a character like Logan, who’s defined by his violent nature (hence the subtitle Berzerker), is forced to be a pacifist in a world where he would thrive if he gave in to his base nature. It means the writer has to be more creative than simply have Wolverine SNIKT in a scene and end things with a bloody brawl.

Disappointingly, it’s a short volume at four issues and Marvel pad it out by including a reprint of Millar/McNiven’s Old Man Logan Giant-Size #1 from 2009 which you’ll have already read if you read the original collected edition.

Old Man Logan is one of the few gems to have emerged from the hot mess that was Secret Wars. It’s not as amazing as Millar/McNiven’s book but it’s a surprisingly good continuation of that storyline. Good Wolverine solo books are rare, guys - it’s well worth checking out if you’re a fan of the character!

And Jeff Lemire: sorree - you’re alright, bub, eh?

Reads as a nice follow up to Mark Millar's Old Man Logan book. Logan suddenly appears in Times Square of the current Marvel universe. After he gets his bearings, he decides to kill every villain who threatened his family in the future. A nice romp ensues from there. Good, gritty art by Andrea Sorrentino. It's overpriced though, as it's $17 for 4 issues plus a reprint of an issue from Mark Millar's run.

The Wolverine that we know and love...

May be a little soft in his old age...

But when his country calls...

Err.. his world calls, his claws will come slashing!

Now, what if, for some weird reason, if Logan is transported in time/worlds and can change the horrible past/see how a different world is?

Well, let me back track. So bad guys took over. Good guys became bad guys. World is crap.

Hulk had children.

They are all evil. You have evil, green-super-human-things destroying whatever they want to destroy. They destroyed something very important to Logan. Logan isn't happy. Logan comes out of retirement.

The art in this is so different in this book. I love how dark yet beautiful it is.

It can get pretty gory,

But the way things are interpreted on one page is so cool and interesting.

Well anyway, Logan is on a revenge streak, Captain America is old, "other Hawkeye" (Kate Bishop) makes a stand against Logan, Hulk had way too many children and he is also evil like most of the super heroes we have come to love and adore.

What's next, Lemire?

Despite the “1” on the spine, this is technically a continuation from a previous Old Man Logan graphic novel, probably the one by Mark Millar advertised on the inside back cover. All you really need to know, though, is that the titular Logan has apparently traveled back in time from a dystopic future. Intent on avenging his murdered family, he sets out to find the people responsible. Or, I guess, who will eventually be responsible. It's not a bad setup, and it soon becomes apparent that Logan’s future may not be as immutable as he thinks …

And that's only the first half of the book. The rest of it is comprised of Old Man Logan Giant-Size #1, which is written by Mark Millar and apparently continues from his original storyline. And there's a text page summarizing that original tale, which is nice for newbies like myself. All due props to Jeff Lemire, but I found Millar’s story the more interesting of the two. Then again, his tale doesn't continue in the next volume …

Anyway, this was fun. Recommended!

I read this because I saw Jeff lemire wrote it and am always hopeful he will write a Big House (Marvel) superhero comic (versus the indie stuff he does better). I am usually disappointed in this quest, but this was good, maybe 3.5, though I don’t really care a whole lot about this alternative universe, and the dialogue isn’t all that great, but the idea of having someone—Logan-- go back in time to the present to try and change the course of a history that would seem to be disastrous for a lot of his Marvel superhero friends, that’s pretty interesting. And finally pretty well done. And darker than Lemire usually gets. The subtitle Berserker is apt here, but it’s complicated, too.

I read this without having read Millar’s run, so that is a problem, but they do include one of Millar’s issues so you get a little background. Those bad Wolverine movies, eh, and there’s not enough good Wolverine comics at least that I know about . . . so it was pretty good, I was pretty entertained.

Old Man Logan finds himself in the past.
description
Logan is embracing his second chance and is determined not to let his future come to pass.

I liked Berserker overall, but I think I would have liked it more if I read it prior to beginning Extraordinary X-Men. Chronological order is important. So Logan has decided to annihilate the people who ruined his future to make sure it never happens. Logan is good annihilating things.

This volume is a good bridge between the Secret Wars Old Man Logan series and the staff of Extraordinary X-Men. It walks the reader through everything taking place with Old Man Logan.

This was okay.

Basically Wolverine from Old Man Logan is here to kill people. If you didn't read Old Man Logan go read it. It's stupid as fuck but also really really fun. So now that Wolverine is in the regular world he starts killing people who screwed him over. That works out not so well as one guy isn't even there, Hulk isn't Bruce, and later on he finds out he's dead.

Kind of fucked up huh Wolvie?

The volume ends on a sour note and now we wonder what Wolverine's life will be. Sadly I don't care much about him but I'll keep reading to see his interactions. The one with hawkeye alone was worth it. I don't think this series can live very long though. Maybe 3 volumes max.

One of the best Logan's stories in years, and the one talking hated Millar's Old Man Logan.
Lemire & Sorrentino are a great team, giving us back everything made the character great and striking the reader at the heart.
If this volume included issue #7 with the ending of the Deathstrike/Marauders mini-saga, this was going to be a 5 star review. Luckly I've read it as individual issues and had not to wait for vol.2 to be released to read the awesome epic finale.

And the Dark Knight Returns reference made me smile :D

Its still a solid series and I love the way it unfolds and the way he goes against the Black butcher and we bounce between his past in the wasteland and present in marvel 616 and his face off against Hulk and then team up with Kate and Steve and how he is content now and the way the story deals with PTSD is amazing and gives hope to a character who lost it and is a great start to Logan in 616 and also loving the way they explore his mindset atm and the art is gorgeous and just makes this series so much better.

__________________________________________________________________________________

It was a surprisingly good book, we pick up with Wolverine as he is in Marvel prime 616 and he thinks its his past and he is on a mission to hunt down the enemies that killed his family or destroyed his world "the wastelands" and the first target is Black Butcher and its bloody and then a clash with the new Hulk Amadeus and then team up with Kate to go after the mysterio until it gets too bloody and so its upto Steve to Stop him and there is a realization that your past doesn't have to define you and meeting with the X-MEN and then finally a tale of Banner vs Logan in OML timeline! It was a great, brutal and bloody book and the art is just freaking gorgeous and just shows the paranoia and the choices some men make when given a choice to restart life! Amazing writing by Lemire as usual and some scenes were gory and thats awesome!

I'm really enjoying this run written by Lemire. I'm reading the single issues (thru 8 as of now) which is more than this volume covers. Lemire picks up with Old Man Logan showing up in normal Marvel continuity after the Secret Wars destroy the multiverse. He thinks he traveled back in the past so he sets out to stop the future he experienced with the villains banding together to kill all the heroes. The art works really well here for the most part. Looking forward to reading more.

I bought into the single issues because it's Lemire and because of late Marvel has not been putting Wolverine in OHC. Still waiting on Aaron's second half of his run to get the second omnibus.

P.S. Lemire's best work right now IMHO is Descender (waiting on my Black Hammer issue one to come in the mail).

Catching Up on the Old Man Logan stories!

Amazon is selling most of the Old Man Logan collections for only $1.80 or $2.20 each. So I picked up Volumes 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5. From that point on i collected the series with paper comics. I had a lot of questions that hopefully will get some answers to. I like this version of Logan. Just not crazy about another time traveling muatant.

After the flawed Brian Michael Bendis-penned Secret Wars tie-in in order to place the former Wolverine into the main Marvel continuity that is Earth-616, Jeff Lemire begins his run on the ongoing Old Man Logan series.

Following the literally world-bending cataclysm that was Marvel’s 2015 big event miniseries Secret Wars, Old Man Logan suddenly wakes up in a world that has not yet become the Wasteland. Believing he has time-travelled to his past (because that’s what the X-Men usually do), Logan makes a kill-list of people in order to save the future from the supervillains that will rule his world.

One could perceive this as a time-travelling twist to the classic Death Wish revenge story, Lemire continues this central theme going back to the original miniseries by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, which is Logan being a man out of his comfort zone. Along with our anti-hero trying to adjust to his new surroundings, the book does flashbacks to his time in the Wasteland, a post-apocalyptic America where he could’ve embraced his violent animalistic side, but instead to choose a life of family and pacifism.

As always with this incarnation of Wolverine, it is dark given his backstory and yet there are pieces of humour sprinkled throughout this volume, which is largely his interaction with superheroes who differ from what he remembered during the Wasteland, from Amadeus Cho’s Hulk to Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye. Kate Bishop, in particular was a real treat as not only do we get a cameo from Pizza Dog (for those who have read Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye run), the banter between Logan and Kate evokes the many witty partnerships Wolverine has had towards young female characters i.e. Jubilee.

Once again, Andrea Sorrentino’s art is a real highlight as he provides a unique presentation to both Earth-616 and the Wasteland, collaborating with colourist Marcelo Maiolo who uses bright colours to punctuate a moment. Known for his unconventional panel layouts, Sorrentino’s action sequences are bloody spectacular with Logan as always slashing his way through various adversaries and be warned, things go gory, not least an explosive mistreatment to a cow.

If there is any criticism, is not so much the story itself, although it is only four issues long, the packaging of this book is the issue. Concluding this volume is the inclusion of Old Man Logan Giant-Size #1, the climax of Millar and McNiven’s comic. This is just out of place, to only put this at the end of the book, but you should’ve read the entirety of that miniseries prior to reading Lemire’s run.

Although this is not as good as the original Old Man Logan comic from 2008, Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino craft a solidly fun first volume, which makes me excited about the continuation of this Wolverine’s violent adventure.

An intriguing redemption story giving a defeated Old Man Logan the chance to fix things once and for all, no punches pulled. While this first volume takes most of its time to set up the character and the world, there's the promise that things will get much more interesting. Andrea Sorrentino's art works wonderfully with this narrative, beautifully capturing the destabilizing sensation of loss and confusion.

It was okay. Would rather have skipped the origin story. Well, it could have been told in 5 panels or less. This whole book seems a bit unnecessary. Rather just have Old Man Logan get on with integrating with his new world. Developing supporting cast. A hook for the book past another x-man from the future sent back to stop ruination of the world. Rachel, Cable, Bishop, Nate... Been on this road before.

The day after I wrote the above, I've come back to add that I think Old Man Logan will be a very interesting character to have around the 616 (if it's still called that) for a while.

And I'm off on a tangent...
I'm getting to be a bit uncomfortable with the way Marvel is tossing away all it's main characters. I like that they're adding some diversity. (Disgruntled. Not that any of major new male leads is gay yet.) Thought that was going to be the Totally Awesome Hulk. Or Hercules. C'mon Marvel. Need a major gay male lead.

This didn't work for me on an emotional level. There are multiple flashbacks that are supposed to make us care about Logan's grief and his handling it by taking revenge, but they are all flat and generic. I really enjoyed the artwork though.

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino should work together forever. After their highly successful run on Green Arrow, the duo reunite to pilot Old Man Logan through the post-Secret Wars universe as he tries to deal with the fact that he's in the past, and could potentially stop the Wasteland of his future from coming into being. This brings him into conflict with the Totally Awesome Hulk and Kate Bishop, before having an old-people battle with Steve Rogers.

Sorrentino's art is so gorgeous; he doesn't get to show off a lot of his paneling choices until the latter half of the volume, but there are some double page spreads that are jaw-droppingly good. His use of shadows and zoom-in panels are also fantastic.

Logan's journey through this volume as he comes to terms with the new universe he finds himself a part of is well-realised, and having him meet counterparts of the characters he remembers in Amadeus Cho and Kate Bishop is a clever touch, and the acknowledgement of 616 Wolverine's death makes it feel like Marvel are committing to this direction for the character.

Back on track for the series of Old Man Logan. After issue zero with all the time travel I was not liking the direction the series was taking. Lemire does a great job at tying both stories together and progressing along. The book is violent and doesnt hold back, Logan is out to correct the past and make sure the future doesnt happen. Logan finds Hawkeye but it isnt the Hawkeye he remembers, and slowly he quest unravels. The art is the same as the previous books and its good, its gritty and loose. Lots of actions and violence the way a wolverine book should be. The giant sized issue (by Mark Millar) in the back is amazing, its the fight we waited for with Old man Logan and old man Banner. its bloody and messy and its Logan holding back nothing. Looking forward to Lemire writing more.

Interesting Logan stuff.

He's back from the OML timeline and he has no idea where he is.. but because of his timeline that's a wasteland after the villains killed everyone, well, he decided to start killing them villains. Fun stuff.

Also 4 stars cuz I fell in love with the artwork.

SO. MUCH. BLOOD. Blood everywhere! Awesome stuff.

Back in 2008, Mark Millar and Steve McNiven brought us an incredible Wolverine story called, Old Man Logan. For me, it stands as one of the best Wolvie titles I have read. It took place outside of continuity and brought us a real gritty tale of a Logan grown old in a post-apocalyptic setting.

It was the tits!

Now, thanks to Secret Wars, Old Man Logan has made it back into the 'normal' Marvel universe. It's actually one of the very few things Secret Wars did that made me really, really, happy.

So...now we have an ongoing Old Man Logan comic book with Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino at the helm. And you know what? They fucking nailed it!

I've always been a big Lemire fan so I was pretty excited to hear that he was writing this. I really dug the way he kept the gritty and dark tone of the original Old Man Logan story and was giddy beyond relief when he even revisits that past series through the use of flashbacks. It was hella fun being in that world again. But this isn't a story about that old world. This is a story about Logan being back in the Marvel universe - and I am happy to report that Lemire pulls it off wonderfully.

Of course, it helped that Lemire had Andrea Sorrentino on picture duty. The dude makes some pretty fantastic pages and there was a number of two-page spreads that made me whoop and holler in delight.

All in all - a great first arc! This makes me happy. I'm so used to Marvel shitting the bed on their books these days that it's always a real treat when I find something I like!

Yet another super-hero story where the "heroes" beat each other up because they have no communication skills. Every time something weird happens in the Marvel Universe the heroes all act like its impossible. Surely after the dozens of times Wolverine has traveled in time he would know how to approach things. Like, not act like a crazy person. Communicate his situation to the other heroes etc. I know, I know... I'm complaining about the stuff I should just ignore and suspend my disbelief.

I think I understand why people like this. Old Man Logan is a really cool character, the art is great, the pacing is fast, and the action is solid. I especially like Millar's story that was tacked on the end... lots of great Wolverine v. Hulk action!

Also in typical Marvel fashion I pick up "volume 1" to find out there's a Volume 0 and a previous stand-alone book with a shared title by Millar done a few years ago. That said, I don't think it affected the reading enjoyment!

Continuing from the previous volume, Old Man Logan wakes up in a post-Secret Wars world which he mistakes to be the past of his own world. So he goes on trying to prevent his future from taking place by killing the heroes/villains responsible. But it's a bit weird that he remembers his homeworld, while he's forgotten about the worlds he traveled to in the previous volume. Maybe it's a Secret Wars aftereffect. Will know when I get to it.
This volume also contains the final issue of the original Old Man Logan story by Millar and McNiven.
