Emily and Socks showed everyone at the Talent Scout Clinic that they belonged, winning the jump off and securing a place on the Junior Olympic team and a ticket to train in Europe. But back home things are going from bad to worse. Missy is moving out. Emily’s mother and her step sister Cat are moving in and it’s not right. Emily doesn’t know why her father wants to patch things up with her mother but she knows that she doesn’t want him to.

And Fox Run is hosting a Halloween show. It will be Bluebird’s big comeback and a chance to show everyone that he is back in the game. But Emily has to keep Socks in the game too now that they have been picked for the team but she is worried that with Missy moving out, it won’t be long before she changes her mind and takes Socks away from her forever.

So when a new horse shows up on the circuit that everyone wants to buy, Emily thinks that maybe he might be the one to replace Socks in her stable of jumpers. But there is something about the horse. A dangerous past that the owners want to keep hidden. But danger is exactly what Emily needs because living on the edge is the only way she can escape everything else in her life and riding dangerous horses can give her that thrill. But at what cost?

Claire Svendsen was born and raised in England, which means she talks with a vaguely cool accent and drinks a lot of hot tea. Obsessed with horses almost before she could walk, Claire spent her summers dragging the old family typewriter into the garden where she would write books about a rich family giving her a horse. Though she would like you to think they were the masterpieces of a young prodigy, the truth is they never went much further than the first chapter and were awful.

Claire likes to think she can write a lot better now. She also finds writing this biography about herself in the third person both weird and alluring all at the same time. Claire now lives in Florida because she doesn't like cold weather and when she's not busy writing, you can find her hanging at the barn with her thoroughbred Merlin.

In this book you learn a lot about the characters personalities when faced with a sad and depressing situation. This is said in many different quotes throughout the book. One of them is “I think we’re all messed up. Life messes you up. It’s how you deal with it that counts (110).” That quote said by rob I believe sums up the book beautiful. He is saying no matter how many times you get knocked down you just have to deal with it and move on. In this story there is a lot of bad things happening, yet everyone just gets up and moves on. That’s the major thing I learned from the characters in this book.

Dark Horse Review

Just when you think Emily's life has a chance of smoothing out, she can't catch a break. Not only has she lost her step mom and brother due to her dad's actions, now her father has lost his job and they will need to leave Fox Run. Her dad rescued her mother from her abusive marriage to another man, putting his own relationship on the line. Now, Emily's mom is under the influence of alcohol and not easy to be around. All the adults in her life are a mess and she realized Nye, the newest horse to the barn, has a dark soul. Although Emily has experienced victories in her riding, no one person has this many bad things happen to them in one year. It would take a self confident person to handle so much stress, and yet she's only 15. It is good Emily is a fictional character.
