Using humorous dinosaur mashups as a creative way to introduce and explore history, The Presidential Masters of Prehistory explores the lives of six famous presidents.
The endearingly illustrated Jurassic Classic series uses humorous, prehistoric dinosaur mashups as a creative way to introduce and explore nonfiction and history. With a mix of "dino" puns and fun wordplay, The Presidential Masters of Prehistory features six famous presidents and explores their lives and contributions as dinosaurs, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, or Abraham Lincolnathus as the dinos might say. Each "prehistoric" president featured in the book includes a brief biographical history with a prehistoric twist, as well as a clever parody on each president's most famous contributions to our nation's history.
Odd. Endearing format and illustrations, but...the content strikes me as offensive. 6 presidents, 3 of whom were enslavers (making the 'master' in the title extra creepy) are featured and given dinosaur personas. The book frames the Americas as a wild, wild place, led fearlessly by 6 dinosaurs (or white men, depending on the time period in question). Nevermind the slave labor used to build the fancy houses highlighted in the book. Never mind the indigenous people that were forcibly removed to "make way" for others as more territory was purchased. I feel like I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill, but it's precisely BECAUSE this is a kid's book that I find the comparisons jarring.
This was such a fun read with the kiddos! It was a fun way to get the kids reading and learn some new facts along the way. The art was fun and kept everyone’s attention through the story.
I read this book with my 6 year old son and he really enjoyed. He loves dinosaurs and loved the dinosaur names given to the presidents. We both learned some really cool facts about the presidents. We both like the fun drawings and the easy to read layout of the book. I received this book through a giveaway in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.
