From the moment they met as children, there was something special between Noah Chase and Gracie Taylor, something that grew and matured right along with them. Despite Gracie's troubled family--and Noah's cold, distant one--they man-aged to make each other laugh, and keep each other's dreams alive...

But Noah's father already had plans for his golden boy's future--plans that did not include the likes of poor, ordinary Gracie Taylor. And when he succeeded in tearing them apart--on the night before their wedding--it seemed those childhood dreams and teenage passions had been crushed by more grown-up things, like sorrows and secrets and lies...

Now, Gracie has returned to Idle Point, Maine--and so has Noah. Over the years, they've wondered if those dreams were just delusions, or if a love like theirs could ever happen again. Maybe they'll find out at last...

I thought I was really going to like this book. I love stories when the main characters have known each other for a long time and one of them has always been in love with the other... but in all honesty, this one just didn't do it for me.
For starters, it had way too much backstory. Sometimes it feels like Noah and Gracie are actually secondary characters and the plot revolves around their parents and their dislike for each other.
I never really felt the romance between the "main characters". What little does happen, happens too quickly... and then we get a non ending explanation of things that happened in the past.
I really think the author could've summed up the whole first part in a few chapters instead of letting it drag on, and then given more care to the second part.
There's also one thing that really freaked me out: (Spoiler alert) If Gracie still thought Noah was her brother, why in the hell did she sleep with him?? I get that she loved him and so on... but it still grossed me out. I knew they weren't really brother and sister, but I still couldn't enjoy the reconciliation. I mean... what was she thinking the whole time? "Omg! I'm f**king my own brother!"
That's just messed up!
And lastly, I got the feeling the ending was written like that because the author couldn't think of a better way to put all the bits and pieces together. I might be wrong, but it just didn't make a lot of sense to me.

There were many aspects of the book that I truly enjoyed. The writing is emotional, the characters developed. I will not go into detail because I do not want to have any spoilers, but toward the end of the book, Ms. Bretton had the characters having a scene that did not sit well with me. Nonetheless, the rest of the book is a compelling and unique read. Happy reading!

I really like this book. The author gives you the back story and the current story while maintaining the mystery of the conflict that prevails in both. Very interesting and I loved the characters.

Totally loved this story. Gracie and Noah, stories from childhood to adulthood and the heartaches they suffered before they found true happiness together.

This book was . . . okay. The resolution to the conflict may as well be a giant red flag waving every few chapters, that's how predictable it was. The MCs, when children, seem to have a huge amount of insight that doesn't ring true. I'm not sure how an isolated five-year-old being raised by her drunk father and harried grandmother would have such a keen sense immediately of how unusual her life was. It's your very first day of school and you've never met these kids or been to anyone else's house . . . so why would you immediately have these feelings that everyone else had a kind of life that you didn't?

“There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved.”
George Sand
Simon Chase is the proud member of a dynasty. The Chase family can trace their roots to almost the beginning. They were the founders of Idle Point, Maine and remain the richest and most influential family in this part of the state. Simon’s duty to carry on the Chase line weighed heavily on his mind. When he married Ruth, they were sure their lives would be full and complete. This dream was soon dispelled when no child came. Eventually, with the passing of too many years, they both gave up any hope of the family they both had dreamed of. Somehow, after all, years of disappointment, Ruth was pregnant.
Noah Chase entered the world with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth. His legacy didn’t stop there as his father had plans and great expectations for the son he thought he would never have. This put unbelievable pressure on and caused him incredible loneliness and heartache.
In kindergarten, he met Gracie. Graciela Marie Taylor came into the kindergarten class with a mixture of fear and dread. She already knew her letters and numbers and even read the few children’s books she had. When the boy approached her and welcomed her into this new world, a ban was instantly formed.
This relationship seems doomed from the beginning. They were from opposite ends of the financial and social scale. Noah was soon sent off to a series of boarding schools in an attempt to form him into the heir his father wanted. Noah fought tooth and nail to foil the plans he had no intention of living up to.
When he returns to Idle Point after Gracie’s high school graduation, the attraction hadn’t lost any of its fervor. He made her whole and she made him stronger. The question remains, is this enough? Gracie has the dream of becoming a veterinarian and a college scholarship. Noah has a father that is still determined to mold him into his lifelong dream.
This romance is also a family drama. Mapping the lives of so close and yet so separated by so much. It is a big story in a small hamlet, where everyone knows their neighbor and secrets wouldn’t stay hidden for long.

This is a story of boundless love and illimitable loss. This is a chronicle of the strong and weak people that call the picturesque village of Idle Point, Maine. I didn’t know what to expect when I opened this book but wasn’t disappointed at what I found. This is a feel-good tale that is sure to cause a sigh and smile to all who read it.

This sort of story is right up my alley, second chance love, family secrets and a cute wee girl :)

Gracie has lived at Idle Point her whole life. Her mother died when she was a baby and her father turned to alcohol. This meant that her Grandmother pretty much raised her. Her father never seemed to get over losing her mother and seemed to forget that he even had a daughter.

When Gracie was 5 years old she met Noah at school. He was a sweet boy who took her under his wing and made her feel welcome at her new school. Her grandmother worked for his family so she spent time in his family home after school.

Noah was sent off to boarding school when he turned six and didn't return to Idle Point until he was seventeen years old.

Gracie is a focused and determined young woman the next time Noah sees her. She is doing well at school and working hard to save for University to realise her dream of being a Veterinarian. Noah is completely entranced by Gracie and loves that she knows what she wants to do with her life and prepared to work hard to achieve it.

Noah hasn't hard to work hard for anything. His father writes cheques and his education seems to come to him on a plate. His grades however are another story.

These two still have that beautiful bond they shared as young kids and a summer romance bring them even closer together. Everything is looking bright for them until Noah's father delivers earth shattering news to Gracie which has her running from Idle Point and her sweet Noah.

Eight years later and Gracie returns to Idle Point. Noah has also recently returned, with a daughter intow but no wife.

What happened eight years ago to make Gracie leave him so suddenly?

There are many secrets to be revealed and a lot of heartbreak but will these two finally get their happy ever after?

Got this free on the kindle, and I really wanted to like it more, but I couldn't. I didn't feel connected with the story, and I felt little to no emotion at all. The story's simply telling you what happened, and you read about the romance - but you don't feel it at all. It's a beginning from when they were little kids to their mid twenties. I mean, there wasn't any depth to the book either. It's in the 3rd POV, and we hear a little bit from everyone. I sometimes like the 3rd POV, but it just didn't work in this book for me. I mean, yay for happy endings. But it was a bit too cheesy at the end. Here's the last couple lines:

Well, it's a pretty predictable plotline. And all I can say is, wow, Gracie's such a gullible character. I mean, (at like 80% of the book) I thought the author was going for

The story was sweet if predictable.

What bothered me was that a seasoned writer (I have never read anything else by this author but see on her profile that she has published multiple books) would permit so many inconsistencies and sloppy editing. In some places the 'hippie' family has 11 kids, in another 12. In some places a character is called Ann and a page or two later it is Mary. There are many places where sentences aren't separated by full stops, where words run into one another.

I find that bad editing prevents me from becoming involved with a story. It is almost as if these constantly remind me that it is just fiction. I want a story to be so well written, and so well edited that I can fall headlong into it. To only surface again as I turn the last page. One should be left with the feeling that every word, every comma is essential to the story.

I am sure that there are many people who love this book, but it is not for me.

This is my fourth Barbara Bretton book so obviously I am a fan. Noah and Graciela have known each other all their life(since kindergarten). This is not only a love story but tragedy as well. Gracie mother died very young. She had to deal with an alcoholic father and was raised by her grandmother in poor setting. Noah is from a rich family and his father noticing both children care for each other even as they got older did not like it. It is revealed that Noah's dad had a relationship in high school with gracie's mom and later had an affair with her. The book has a wonderful concept of these young people whose love has grown from kindergarten all the way to adulthood. I was not crazy about the length of backstory that kept me from giving this book more ratings.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book...a lovely story about coming-of-age, grief, romance and past mistakes and secrets. My first read of this author and won't be my last. Haven't read a book that brought tears to my eyes in awhile, this one did. I'd recommend to those who enjoy romance, family secrets and finding yourself in the midst of it all. Hard to put down!

Absolutely loved!

I loved this book! It broke my heart, made me fall in love, cry, and smile. It was an emotional read but I loved every minute of it.

Gracie Taylor has had a rough childhood. Her mother died when she was just a child, and her father hit the alcohol. She was raised by her grandmother. She met her best friend, Noah, when she was 5 years old in kindergarten. from the day They met, something special grew between them that was untouchable. Noah's family were wealthy and Gracie's grandmother worked for them so she would go there after school until she got off work. Gracie came from the other side of town. But that didn't matter to Noah.

Noah Chase grew p in a privileged home but never had his father's love. He couldn't understand why, his mother adored him but his dad tolerated him. There was a feud between Noah's father and Gracie's dad that the kids never understood. When his Dad realized that Noah was attached to Gracie, he shipped him off to boarding school at 5 years old. Noah started acting out in every school to get his attention, he came back when he was 17 years old.

After getting kicked out once again. When coming back to Isle Point he runs into Gracie all grown up and she's beautiful. She has goals and dreams set. She wants out of Idle Point. She wants to be a veterinarian, while Noah has no clue what he wants to do. He's just looking for the next party.

There are so many secrets that his parents are keeping from the kids that will change their lives, but because they are selfish they keep them to themselves.

Noah and Gracie start to date while they are both in different colleges and get serious. They start to make plans for the future. Noah wants to go to Paris and write a book. She loves him and will put off medical school. After they sneak off to another county to get a marriage license, Gracie gets a visit from his father with a bribe and to walk away and the real story about her mother's past. What she learns will change both of their lives. So she runs, leaving Noah a note and goes off to medical school.

Eight years later, Gracie is a Doctor at a high end Manhattan Veterinarian practice. When her Dad calls her and asks her to be in his wedding she's so taken back, she agrees without thinking about it. She hasn't been home since she left. She knows that Noah's abroad so no worries there.

When she gets home everything has changed. Even her Dad. The second day she's there, she runs into a little girl with no cost who kicks her in the middle of the street. Not knowing who she belongs to she brings her back to the place she ran out of only to discover that she is Noah's daughter. She is distraught and leaves and when she's alone she cries only to have him follow her.

He doesn't realize how much he missed her until he sees her again. But there is so much anger in him still. He wants answers, he deserves them. When he realizes that his mom tricks him into spending thanksgiving with her new family to try to get them together, Gracie finally tells Noah the truth. Together they confront his mom, who denies everything. When his mom realizes that she is going to lose her son, she finally decides to come clean about the secrets and lies.

Can this couple finally have their happy ending? Or will all the lies year them apart?

A must read!!

Idle Point, Maine Stories - Book One

I absolutely love this story of Gracie and Noah. They become friends at a very young age, but were separated by distance until they were teenagers. When they meet again, they fall in love, but dark family secrets keep them apart. This book has enough twists and turns that kept me turning page after page to see what would happen next. I read it straight through.
I love all the books that Barbara Bretton has written; I have never been disappointed by any of them, and would recommend them to anyone who likes a good romance.
I originally picked up one of Ms. Breton’s books because her name caught my eye.....my last name is Bretton. I love that the books I’ve read have all taken place in Maine, which is where I grew up.
Read this book. I loved it and I know you will too!

This book reads like a Biography at first, then becomes a Contemporary Romance. By this, I refer to the style of the author in telling the story. In the first part, we get a lengthy exposition on their backstories. Then, we catch up to the present and I just didn't care anymore. The conflict brings up a lot of drama but I can't help myself from rolling my eyes. The way they were presented was like they were destined to be together, but circumstances keep them apart, when in fact, the heroine is just easily influenced and weak-willed and whiny and... Urgh, I just hate her character. She doesn't improve during the story. I feel sorry for the guy for falling for her.

2.5 stars. I'm sorry but I just really hate the heroine too much to enjoy this.

This is Wonderful

It's one of those stories you don't want to end. I'm glad there are more books that take place in Idle Point. Gracie has loved Noah since she was five years old. From first grade on Noah was sent away to boarding school, so they lost contact. As teenagers they rediscovered each other. Theirs was a forbidden love, and they didn't know why. They just knew it had to be hidden from everyone. Noah comes from wealth and Gracie's family is poor. Her father is an alcoholic, but her Gramma Del is her rock. Aside from that, the cards are stacked against her and Noah ever being together. Saying good-bye to Idle Point was hard, but she must. A story you won't be able to put down. Plenty of emotion, sadness, and joy. Don't miss this one.

The story was cute, although predictable. I read this as a break from heavier reads and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. As other reviewers have stated, the backstory was entirely too long. I also had a very hard time looking past the editing errors. The number of children one of the families had changed from 12 to 11, and name of another character flipped from Ann to Mary and back again. Those were the most egregious errors I noticed, but there were many other punctuation and paragraph errors that made it difficult to read. I expected more consistency from a seasoned author.

This was a pretty bad book. I got through the first couple chapters and realized that I really didn't care about the characters. I'm supposed to be reading a contemporary romance but I'm reading about children.

I skimmed ahead and found that the main conflict was...worrisome and I didn't care to read the rest. I read the last chapter to confirm my suspicions.

The writing left something to be desired. The structure of the story wasn't good. There was way too much backstory at the front end of the book. Overall, it felt like an early draft of a questionable story.

At Last

Lies and deceit can ruin lives forever if you allow them to. Noah and Gracie have loved each other since they were five but can they find their happily ever after?

The story is very good but the first half of the book sets the story. The second half is the present. There is one plot but several view points. Many times it is hard to figure out who is speaking and from what view point you are reading from. All in all this is a good story.

They grew up together, sort of. Her grandmother worked as cook for his parents. His father hated her father. The family’s never got along but the two of them fell in love and planned to marry. His father found out and told her something that caused her to run for eight years. Read Noah and Grace’s story of heartache.

I loved everything EXCEPT......
She gave in to desire and slept with him while believing he was her half brother. That was a bit weird, but the writing, the back story, and ultimately, the love story were great to read. Brought out a few tears at the end (even though I knew what would happen).

it was an interesting small town romance with a few scary twists. POSSIBLE SPOILER- the scenes with Noah's daughter sound so contrived, but the bath went on and on longer than needed, running off to the shore. Otherwise good.
