Seraphim Revival #2

Throne of the Dead

Rate this book
In an empire ruled by the honored dead, seraphs are the ultimate weapons. Fueled by the pilot's very soul, these colossal humanoid war machines are unstoppable in battle. Only a few possess the gift to control such craft, and those men and women are prized above all others.

Quennin S’Kev was a seraph pilot before injuries scorched her mind and stripped her abilities. Exiled by her people for reasons she does not understand, she lives on without honor or purpose. It is an existence so repulsive to her that she openly considers ending her own life.

All that changes when enemy commandos kidnap Quennin and bring her before the renegade Veketon. He claims he can restore her talents, even make them stronger, and offers her a place in his army worthy of her skills. It is everything her heart secretly desires.

His price?

She must swear allegiance to the worst traitor her people have ever known.

Jacob Holo has been a recreational geek since childhood, when he discovered Star Wars and Star Trek, and a professional geek since college, when he graduated from Youngstown State University with a degree in Electrical and Controls Engineering. He started writing when his parents bought that “new” IBM 286 desktop, and over the years, those powers combined to push him to the next level of nerddom: a sci-fi author who designs intricate worlds and tech systems...and promptly blows them up in a string of nonstop action.

He is the author of seven books, including national bestseller The Gordian Protocol (with David Weber), military sci-fi The Dragons of Jupiter, YA urban fantasy Time Reavers (a Kirkus Reviews Best Indie Book of 2014), and the mecha space opera trilogy Seraphim Revival (Bane of the Dead, Throne of the Dead, Disciple of the Dead); and YA steampunk fantasy The Wizard’s Way (with H.P. Holo).

Between novels, Jacob enjoys gaming of all sorts, whether video gaming, card gaming, miniature wargaming, or watching speed runs on YouTube. He is a former-Ohioan, former-Michigander who now lives in South Carolina with his wife/boss H.P. and his cat/boss Nova.

This sequel was so much better than the first book....and the first book was awesome!! Holo knows his stuff when writing sci-fi/fantasy novels!! I liked that there was some time that had passed between the first book and this one (5 years), it allows us readers to "check in on things". Just like the first book, there was plenty of action, dark humor and suspense!! I can't wait to dive into the third book!!

I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Great Sequel!!!

I read the first book, "Bane of the Dead", and was quickly drawn in. I picked up the second book as soon as I could. The story and plot strengthened and didn't slow down. An amazing sequel in my opinion. Even though there was a 5 year gap between the two books, it wasn't noticed. The gap was filled smoothly. It saddens me knowing there is only one book left in this trilogy. A must read for sci-fi fans such as myself that enjoys space battle and giant mechs!!!

Attack of the Eleven!

Jacob Holo creates a superb look at the future with his descriptive writing style. I have read other sci-fi that incorporates living bodies into warrior ships but Jason Holo brings them to life. His creepy but graphic description of the thrones adds depth to the non-stop action. Veketon’s return and Quennin’s kidnapping set the stage for a new intensity in this eternal war with the Eleven. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

Another fantastic book the builds wonderfully on the first books conclusion, it introduces new characters and without spoiling does a fantastic job at least for me showing how the main cast are all reasonably flawed because of the lives they live. would recommend to anyone.

Instead of a review, I leave you with this question. Is it wrong for 10,000 year old guy to abandon his multi-millennium master plan to attempt to romance a 30 year old? You decide.

Throne of the Dead follows Bane of the Dead, continuing the intense action and dramatic plot from book one. Holo definitely stepped up his game when it came to creating an emotional connection to the characters this time around, and I found myself drawn into the story much more than I was in Bane of the Dead, while still heartily enjoying the action and grit. Book two continues to be intriguing and engrossing, and left me immediately grabbing for the next book!
