A young slave on a Bronze-Age raiding ship fights to survive the Santorini eruption, and to understand the heart of Hibya, his beautiful Minoan rescuer. Amid the turbulence of the Revolutionary era, wounded English naval officer Sebastian "Selkie" Singer flees justice, desperately trying to explain the reasons in letters to the baby girl left behind. What mysterious thread binds their stories? An epic historical novel of mystic discovery. Woven across three thousand years, from the fall of Minoan Atlantis to the dawn of the Age of Reason, The Seas Come Still invites you into the hearts of a closely-guarded sisterhood, separated by millennia, but linked by a code of love and service older than faith itself. The ignorant call them witches, mermaids, or worse, as they struggle to protect secrets older than history, and a lifestyle pressed nearly to extinction. A vivid and passionate imagination of the catastrophe that brought down the kingdoms of the Bronze Age, the chaos that gave birth to religions, and the astounding secrets of Minoan navigation and science. From the palaces of Canaan to the windswept coasts of western Ireland; ancient Turkey to the mountainous Basque region of Spain, The Seas Come Still takes you on an unstoppable journey across culture and language, conflict and healing, fact and fable.
This is a literary historical fiction novel that spans a great deal of time to weave together a narrative that connects the distant past, the not-so-distant past, and the present. A well-researched novel with characters I came to know and like (and a couple I came to dislike, for sure). If you enjoy historical fiction with a literary writing style, then you'll love The Seas Come Still by Jamin. It's always fun to experience the world as it was hundreds of years ago. Jamin expertly weaved that experience together.
This story takes one on a journey through time and space, from the Aegean Sea prior to the eruption of Mt Thera to modern-day Japan. The beliefs and traditions of healing and meditation of the Minoan warrior-priestesses spread to their descendants across the millennia. Told through the experiences of a Bronze Age slave on a pirate ship and the journal of an 18th century British naval officer, here is an incredibly detailed, fascinating story of hardship and loss, masquerade, rejection, passion, and sacrifice. Beautifully put together.
Expertly written! I was captivated by the intricate detail of this period in history, the diversity, language, and plot twists kept me wanting more. Very impressed with this writer's masterful flow of combining historical fiction and fact in a fascinating story. Clearly a stand-out!
Wow. There are times that you want to read a book that makes you feel, think, has emotions in itself, ponders about life, and is about a family saga. Interesting you may feel you can be a part of it as well as the author draws you into the story and you want to stay. Will look forward to future books by this author.
