When Johanna Huff arrived in Saginaw, Michigan, as a mail-order bride, she expected to meet Paul, the lumberjack who sent for her. Instead, she found herself ushered to church by a lumber baron accompanied by his mother!
Lumber baron Paul Worthington sent for a mail-order bride on the prodding of his mother, since it was hard to find a woman in Saginaw who wasn’t interested in his money. The only problem was that once he was wed to the lovely Johanna, his mother seemed less pleased than ever.
Will the newly married couple be able to fall in love, or will Paul’s mother make it impossible?
Clara Kincaid devoured every historical romance she could get her hands on. Every Saturday she could be found at the library checking out a too hot for a sixteen year old romance. At the ripe age of forty-four she began her writing journey as Madison Johns with the USA Today Bestselling Agnes Barton Senior Sleuths series.
She went on to write western historical romances that are both clean and sweet as Clara Kincaid. There's something about the old west that attracted her and with the Nevada Brides Series, she's been able to explore places only books have gone for her.
The story idea was okay, but it could have been so much better. The description of the story makes it sound as if Paul's mother was going to provide a lot of tension. However, for the majority of the story, she's not there - just a few pages in the beginning and at the end. Also, the dialogue was stilted and I felt Johanna was not just prickly, she was downright rude at times when she was talking to Paul. She kept saying she was a working girl, but then she was kind of demanding in wanting to see everything and meet all the workers - including going into their homes??? to make sure her husband was treating them right... pretty rude and lady of manor acting...
What is happening to this series? Reading Johanna's story was like watching bad acting in a soap opera. There was no depth, no real characterization...I wanted to love it, but it was tepid at best.
This book is part of the American Mail Order Brides series and the heroine was caught in the Brown Textile Factory fire, plus has other experiences in Lawrence before becoming a mail order bride. While it's a good story with a unique storyline, there were several writing errors which should have been caught by the author or editor.
So many parts of this story surprised me in a good way! Nothing predictable about this book at all! I loved the relationship between Johanna and the staff, but I especially loved the way Paul treated his wife!!
Loved this book! I enjoyed it as much as I did as I was expecting him to be a rough logger instead of the owner! Wish it was just a little longer as I liked them both!
Johanna and Paul's love story is sweet and realistic, but my favorite part is Johanna's personality and values. Even though her station in life changes drastically, she never does. Her sweet personality and humble attitude seem to win over every person she meets.
I enjoyed this story . The author has done a great job of telling her story though the characters in this story of the past. Clara has enhanced the tale with romance, adventure, and suspense.
Johanna: Bride of Michigan (American Mail-Order Bride #26) By: Clara Kincaid 4/5 stars
Johanna grew up poor and has always had to work. So when the factory burned down, her best choice was to become a mail-order bride. She thought that the lumberjack in Michigan sounded like the best match for her. She did meet a nice lady on the train that was headed the same way and struck up a small friendship.
When Johanna arrived in Michigan, she was met by her fiancée, not a lumberjack, but a lumber baron and his mother. She was taken immediately to the church and married. She had no idea what her new life would entail. She became the lady of the house, with cooks, housekeepers, maids, other staff and even a lady’s maid to help her dress, undress, bathe and just about anything else she needed.
Johanna is shocked to say the least and her new mother-in-law doesn’t seem too happy to have her married into the family.
Johanna didn't know what to expect but she knew things had to be better than her current situation. Paul was a lumber baron but he submitted his ad as a lumberjack. She was in for a surprise and so was he. I loved these characters and the side characters too.
This series was my first experience with multiple authors working together to write a series on a large scale. I enjoyed every book in the series and found several new authors that I hadn't read before.
