Rose: Bride of Colorado is the 38th book in the 50-book American Mail-Order Bride Series.
To escape a family scandal, Boston socialite Rose Winchester becomes the mail order bride of Colorado rancher Charlie Halstead. Love blossoms, but their fragile relationship is tested when secrets from the past threaten to tear them apart.
Margery Scott is the author of more than thirty-five novels, novellas and short stories in various genres, and is an avid reader of almost every genre other than horror, fantasy and sci-fi.
She lives on a lake in Canada with her husband, and when she’s not writing or travelling in search of the perfect setting for her next novel, you can usually find her wielding a pair of knitting needles or a pool cue.
Part of a series of Mail order brides in all 50 states, this tale takes the reader to Colorado. Not only is Rose trying to find a new chance at life after the garment factory where she worked burns down, she is also running away from her past. Charlie sends for a bride to escape an arranged marriage and to hold on to his inheritance. I find it interesting to imagine the forces at work to bring to strangers together in marriage. Glad these stories are full of happy endings.
This is the 38th story in the American Mail Order Brides series. It's quite enjoyable, but a bit short even for the novella format chosen as a parameter for the series. But the story itself is easy to read and has good character development for the main characters. If you are reading this series, this is well worth your time.
If you are like me and just getting into Mail-order Bride books then this is a must read. It's a very quick read that you can finish in one sitting. I like Rose, I think she is a strong woman who just had some bad luck. There is nothing like family history and secrets to bring you down. However, Rose finds a way to move on from her family and that is finding a husband.
When Charlie realizes he needs to marry to avoid losing everything he loves, will he follow his family's wishes? Rose and Charlie's story isn't perfect, but it's beautiful and realistic. I enjoyed every bit of this sweet story, including the unexpected.
A good fun read. Although it was hard to believe a whole town would hold Rose accountable for her father's actions. And Charlie... unbelievably patient.
Rose: Bride of Colorado (American Mail-Order Bride #38) By: Margery Scott 4/5 stars
Rose was a Boston socialite, but became a mail-order bride to escape a family scandal, that wouldn’t leave her with any real, good prospects for marriage. Charlie’s ad caught her eye, because of the ranch life and having horses. Though she grew up privileged, she grew up loving horses and learning to ride, so she expected that she would be able to do that when in Colorado. But she didn’t know the first thing about cooking, sewing or cleaning, but could direct a household staff, if her new house came with one, but it doesn’t.
Charlie was told by his father that he had to get married before his next birthday or he wouldn’t inherit the family ranch, and it would instead go to his lazy, worthless cousin. His parents may have thought/expected that he marry Eugenie, the banker’s daughter, but Charlie can’t stand her. He also didn’t want to marry a girl who only wanted him for the money. He wanted a wife who wanted actually be with him for him, not for his family name & the benefits of such.
But jealousy rears its ugly head and leaves a nasty path in its wake, but it’s possible that what Charlie and Rose have been working towards is on rocky ground and when truths come to light, it may not be pretty.
We all want to find the place where we belong. Rose felt at home at Charlie's place as soon as she arrived. She thought she would be happy with a marriage of convenience because it granted her the protection that she craved. She has been running from a scandal for a while. Charlie needs a wife to hold on to his inheritance from his father. He is willing to marry a stranger than marry Eugenie. Their marriage seemed to be a given in their parents eyes. Rose was the answer to his prayers. He could marry her and keep his ranch but never love her. This is a story of what happens when you are busy making plans. It is well worth a read.
Margery has brought her characters to life in this book. Maybe there could be another story for Eugenie in the future. But this book has a moral to learn and you are never to old for that. Good job Margery.
This is my first mail-order bride book, and I enjoyed it. Rose is so sweet, I hope she and Charlie live a long and happy life together! I'd love to read more about them in the future.
Rose was so sweet and helpless. She just did not know how to do anything. I loved how she was willing to learn. I just wish she would have stood up for herself a little bit more instead of running away from her problems.
Good story. Great series.Rose did not cook anything but eggs, never cleaned a house and Rose had a secret,it took a while to come out,but in the end everything worked out for her and Charlie.
