Well, I've read all three of these books. I have this book as well. I think I'll give away the single books and keep this for some day when I have an ache for Austin or Bronte literature and pick it up and read these stories again.
I did really enjoy these books. I have not read the Brontes but have read all of Austen so I was able to catch most of the references. These are fun stories of self discovery and romance, and they follow a typical story line. The author weaved in Austen and Bronte references often to propel the stories also. Not high literature but fun, sweet stories. I’m sure I’ll revisit these stories after I read some of the Bronte sisters’ novels as well.
This collection should come with a warning: be prepared for outbursts of strong emotion. I laughed and cried and stormed and suffered along with the characters. I fell into this collection and didn’t emerge for days. I neglected my family, the dishes, and the laundry. But, I loved each and every story. I cherished each of Sam’s letters. Her heart and soul were revealed to Mr. Knightley with sincerity and vulnerability, “…surrendering my heart, my plans and my will.” Words of gratitude and honesty, her thoughts are laid before the reader to peruse and examine. This is a witty, wonderful story of betrayal, trust, friendship, and love. “Cancer tilted the world sideways” in Lizzy and Jane. I endured a gamut of emotions and all aspects of cancer. The sensitive focus on the heart of the family as well as the struggles of the patient made this story unforgettable. As Jane “struggles to impose order from chaos,” Lizzy is desperate to give, to reach out and to help. “God is there to hold what is too heavy to carry.” I was entranced by the contrast of strength versus vulnerability. The Bronte Plot is an intriguing exploration of truth versus reality. Glorious foreshadowing had me rereading for clues and nuances I had missed. Lucy is the master at burying away the unpleasant and justifying her decisions. Truth is a two-edged sword that cuts through, severing all bonds. As James peels away the layers to uncover the truth, Lucy is laid bare with nowhere to hide. Worlds collide and Lucy finds she must “go back to go forward.”
A Katherine Reay Collection: Dear Mr. Knightley, Lizzy and Jane, the Brontë Plot by Katherine Reay – Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters would be proud of their association with this collection! All three were sweet, sad, and incredibly human! Happy Reading!
Love all of Katherine Reays' books! Real life scenarios with love, fear, joy, laughter, and life mixed all into one. She is definitely an author I will continue to recommend to others.
I had read Dear Mr Knightley 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. I decided to read it again with this collection. I felt connected with Sam in the way she hid in her books. I suppose lots of book lovers tend to do this. I had forgotten how the book wrapped up and loved it again. Lizzy & Jane was a new read for me. I really didn't get into the book until chapter 15. I enjoy the love story portion best & that didn't come into play until then. If you're a foodie you probably would really enjoy this book. The main character was tying what books people read to what foods they would like, interesting concept. I liked this book, but like Dear Mr. Knightely better.
I loved Dear Mr Knightley so much that I bought this collection. I loved the very deep Lizzy and Jane also. The Bronte Plot was ok but not my favorite.
