is a British icon. He was created by Frank Hampson in 1950, and first appeared in the Eagle comic where he was an instant hit with the British public. Almost a decade after the original series had ended, Dan Dare was resurrected in the pages of a brand new sci-fi comic for boys - 2000 AD!
Waking from suspended animation after two hundred years, Dan Dare faced an unfamiliar universe, filled with terrible new threats, but also included all too familiar ones, such as his old nemesis, The Mekon!
The first volume of this punk-fuelled space opera features stories from Pat Mills (Nemesis the Warlock), Steve Moore (Doctor Who) and Gerry Finley-Day (Rogue Trooper) with art by Massimo Belardinelli (Sláine) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen).

Pat Mills, born in 1949 and nicknamed 'the godfather of British comics', is a comics writer and editor who, along with John Wagner, revitalised British boys comics in the 1970s, and has remained a leading light in British comics ever since.
His comics are notable for their violence and anti-authoritarianism. He is best known for creating 2000 AD and playing a major part in the development of Judge Dredd.
Not the best set of stories in the world, but I still liked it.
At the start of the book, there are paragraphs from Pat Mills describing the return of Dan Dare. I thought it a shame that these didn't continue throughout the book with contributions from the rest of the artists and writers involved. That would have added a lot of value to the book.
Whilst the artwork generally stands the test of time, the same can't be said for the scripts.
With DD happily killing aliens as if colonialism never went out of fashion, and a selection of hackneyed, even for the 1970s, supporting characters. I would say this is one that only those who read it the first time around would need to re-visit.
A collection of rather bonkers Dan Dare strips from the first year of 2000AD. He's got a reconstructed face, a crewcut and a bad attitude, and thinks nothing of blowing up planets if they are in his way!
Recent Reads: Dan Dare The 2000AD Years - Vol 1. Starting with the controversial Mills/Belardinelli strips, throwing the classic space hero into battle with cosmic horrors, before Dave Gibbons' ligne claire approach, this book showcases the maturing of the boys' adventure comic.
Dan Dare - Space Hyper-Hero seikkailee 1970-luvun lopun sarjakuvissa, joista monet on kuvitettu hienosti. Tarinat ovat kaavamaisuudessaan ja lapsellisuudessaan aika sympaattisia.
I'm a bigger fan of Hampson's Dan Dare, although this volume is, in theory, more 'my' Dan Dare, but I didn't discover 2000AD until the mid-80s, but this does have its moments, mostly when Dave Gibbons provides the art.
