Bloody fantastic! I really like Michael's writing. His short stories are ideal - strong start, plenty of meat in the middle with one hell of and ending that is never rushed. Must get some tips of this great man. Loved this!

Hope House is a dark place on so many levels, most of it unseen when a retiree couple move in to enjoy their golden years in the woods together. But surely a good clean will wash that darkness away right? Wrong.

A man, injured is found in the forest near the house and brought back and nursed and welcomed by this loving couple but who is he? Where did he come from and what's he listening to in his head?

Michael is a true storyteller and he pulled me in bit by bit, the tension gradually building up until you can't stand it no more than bang! He hits you with some scenes you didn't want to read over breakfast.

Just what the hell is going on here? You think as your brain tries to apply logic to the story. Don't bother. Just enjoy. Highly entertaining and suitably dark and creepy. Michael Bray is one of my favourite horror and thriller writers. Have you read his Project Apex series? No? Oh, that's a thrilling ride!

5 stars Michael, keep the stories coming!

I read an ARC of this book thanks to the author. All review opinions are my own and are totally unbiased.

This short story started off quick and kept up the pace all the way to the end. An elderly couple, Frederick and Joan are wanting to live out their retirement peacefully in a house that they just bought.

Frederick likes to go walking out in the woods that surrounds the house, but everything changes when he finds a stranger laying on the ground. The man is wounded and is in bad shape, so Frederick takes him back to the house.

From that point on, the terror begins as trying to be good Samaritans, they end up allowing a stranger into their midst that is anything but what he seems.

The author, Michael Bray, takes the reader down a gory journey into the unknown. Moral of the story is: Be careful who you let into your house and beware of strangers. Four stars for this one.

Interesting

After reading the trilogy, this was interesting because it goes back to first owners of the house. Michael Bray has a way with words and keeping your interest no matter how gruesome! Looking forward to reading about the next owners.

Bray's imagination is creepy goodness

This short story was like learning the secrets and meeting some of the skeletons of the infamous Hope House. Excellent read, plenty of gore and chills! Highly recommend to all fans of modern horror.

Several years ago I discovered the Whisper series by Michael Bray. To this day they tell a story that has never left me. The atmosphere created by Bray is absolutely palpable. These were the 3 books that really started my journey into the written word.
Bray unfortunately is not a prolific writer, so there's not a lot of his books to read, and little did I know that he wrote 2 short story prequels to that original Whisper trilogy. They are not easy to find! This is the first of those, and it IMMEDIATELY took me back to that atmosphere and setting that I discovered through him all those years ago. It was effortless to fall back into it and that speaks volumes to the quality of Bray's writing.
Absolutely fantastic short story. Can't wait to read the next, and am tempted to reread the 3 full length novels again right afterwards!

More a scream than a whisper

Michael Brays short companion to the excellent Whisper trilogy is a dark foreboding tale that adds to the legend of Hope a house without taking away any mystique. If you are a true fan of the trilogy than you will delve right in. If you are new to the series, then you are missing out on a definite treat and this is not a bad place to start. Go on, you owe yourself a visit to Hope House.

Read it within an hour but it was a great little horror story. Quite dark and creepy with quite a bit of gore thrown in. Michael Bray is among the likes of Stuart Keane and Matt Shaw as being my top horror writers. The sequel has already been per-ordered!
