Michelle: Bride of Mississippi is 16th in the unprecedented 50-book American Mail-Order Brides series.
When Michelle Porter's world collapses and her job as a seamstress disappears, she thinks maybe her cousin, Josephine, has a good idea--and she follows suit and answers an advertisement to be a mail order bride. She doesn't know much about Mississippi, but is willing to take a chance for a better life.
Anthony Chandler's family has lived, loved and worked in Mississippi for generations and have been pillars of the community. The Civil War has changed the landscape, though, and he has ambitions...ones that his mother believes will be easier to achieve with a wife. He has no interest in courting and advertises for a mail-order bride to satisfy his family--and hopefully she'll just leave him alone.
When Michelle learns that Anthony and his mother expect a southern lady--and she has no idea what that entails--can she meet their expectations? Will her dream of love and a home be possible in this very Southern society that she's not part of?
Book 20 in the American Mail-Order Bride series. A factory fire, in a garment factory, ended jobs for many young women. Michelle, and many others, look to mail-order bride ads. Michelle answers an ad from a man in Mississippi. He is needing help with raising his two young nieces. A somewhat misunderstanding as to his financial situation happens. Will Michelle stay with Anthony or up and leave him and the girls? I certainly have loved reading every book in this series! After reading the first book, you don't have to read these in number order.
Michelle agrees to wed Anthony to help him raise his sister's twins. Coming from a poor upbringing, she's amazed at having so much now. She is a kind person and takes charity seriously. She doesn't realize everything possible has been sold to keep up appearances and they are pretty broke. Anthony is a very giving person as well and it's killing him to not be able to share more but he doesn't share his financial situation with his new bride. Will she just think he's stingy and mean? Or will she be happy to be a part of his family? It was pretty good. This story is a clean, sweet romance.
This is the 20th book in the American Mail Order Brides series and the heroine was put out of work due to the Brown Textile Factory fire. The make is a bit self-centered but that's typical for men in the 1890's. It's well done and interesting from beginning to end.
The only thing wrong with this book is you don't really get to learn what new business they will go into. A great story and loved how everyone helped others!
This was a sweet story, but it does not have an overly engaging and exciting plot. It had the potential to be more. I would have liked it if Michelle helped Anthony find his true calling.

This series was my first experience with multiple authors working together to write a series on a large scale. I enjoyed every book in the series and found several new authors that I hadn't read before.
With the fire at the factory Michelle and her cousin Josephine decided to become mail-order brides in the south, for a warmer climate than Massachusetts offered. Unlike many of their friends, they were able to ride most of the way together.
Michelle ends up married to Anthony who has guardianship over his twin nieces because his twin sister and her husband died. Anthony inherited his family estate and his father’s failing clothing business. He’s coming into dire financial straits and has sold off several family heirlooms just to keep his business and house afloat. He doesn’t have the time nor money to properly court a woman of stature in his own town, so he sends off for a mail-order bride. However, he never tells Michelle of his financial woes and that continues to stress him.
Michelle became an instant aunt/mother when she married Anthony and loves the little twin girls just as much as they have taken to her and love her. But she comes to think that Anthony isn’t the man she thought him to be, since he appears to be a money miser. But eventually all the secrets come forth and it makes them stronger in the end.
PUTTING OTHERS BEFORE SELF This is a sweet mail order bride story that also has mystery, suspense, secrets, acceptance and love. Anthony Chandler’s family has been in Mississippi for generations and has been pillars of the community. His father’s business was for upper-end clothing and accessories. After the death of both his parents and his twin sister, he not only is trying to deal with a struggling business but becomes guardian to twin nieces, Mattie and Missy. Sending off for a mail order bride, Michelle Blake is willing to accept his marriage and terms, a marriage in name only for connivance and to help raise his nieces. Trying to maintain social standing isn’t easy when gossips in town are involved. Having a kind of giving spirit shines through, even in the roughest of times with this family. No matter how bad you think you have things, there is usually someone else out there that is in more dire need. Sharing and caring is vital to the Chandler family.
Bride of Mississippi: Michelle and Anthony's story
Book 20 in the 50 book project taken on by 45 authors. Michelle is one of over a hundred women who lost their job at the textile mill when it burned down. Along with her cousin, Josephine, and her other roommates they decide to answer ads for a mail-order bride. Michelle is going to Mississippi to be a wife to Anthony, who has been taking care of his twin nieces since the deaths of his sister and her husband. Michelle thinks she's finally going to be able to live a comfortable life after being poor for her whole life. Anthony's business is actually losing money and he isn't as well off as he has let on. After a near crisis Michelle and Anthony realize how much they mean to each other and we have a happy ending.
The story was interesting and the conflict comes from misunderstandings and poor communication. One thing I've noticed with this series is that some of the stories feel rushed because there are so few pages to tell the story. This tale felt rushed. Everything that happens is crammed into a little over a week, hardly enough time for strangers to learn to trust each other. Michelle went from hot to cold so fast without really knowing Anthony or understanding the situation. It would have been more believable had it felt like more than a week had gone by.
This is a short Christmassy, Mail Order Bride type story but beautifully told. It is the kind that could be a prelude to a full length book. I love Cindy Caldwell's style of telling her stories. She always seems to find a different and interesting way as well as a novel subject matter for her tales even though the overall theme has been written about by so many other authors. Bravo! That's what makes her stories so enjoyably interesting. Her message was that honesty between partners is very necessary regardless of the situation. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I have.
This was a very sweet and wonderful story. Michelle answered an ad to be a mail order bride to a businessman in Mississippi. She needed a home and new start. Anthony needs a mother for his twin orphaned nieces. The agreement between the two seemed perfect. I loved the generosity of the family and the caring nature they each exhibited.
Michelle came to Mississippi as a mail-order bride to help her groom raise his two orphaned nieces. The girls were adorable, and I liked the message in the book about helping others. I would read more books by Cindy Caldwell!
Content: clean (no language, some kissing, no violence)
Knowledge is power and the more you have the better. You don't need lots to have bunches. Love can make miracles happen. Michelle and Anthony have everything they need but forget to communicate.
This book I enjoyed very much. Michelle became a mail order bride same as her friend Josephine. After they can't find work due to a fire where they worked & it will not reopen. Many challenges to follow. I also read Josephine Bride of Louisiana Mail Order Bride. Enjoyed it also.
The author has done a great job of telling her story. The characters where put together in a relationship of romance, charity, and giving of themselves.
Very sweet, rather short story. The ending just makes you want to know how life turns around for these people. Would have likes it to continue on for a little more or use the epilogue to jump ahead so you could be sure how they made it through. Enjoyed it very much
