My name is Brad, and I'm falling for someone I shouldn't. No doubt Saskia's beautiful with the red hair and dark eyes of a vixen. When she smiles at me, I'm lost in animalistic heat. Why haven't I made her mine yet?
The object of my desire is a stone cold killer. Well a retired killer anyway. She meets my heat with her own, yet I fear her heart can never truly thaw enough to love me.
When an old threat resurfaces, Saskia enters my world. I was once a rising star in Hollywood, but violence forced me into the role of a recluse. In all these years, no woman ever tempted me out of my solitude. Not until the mysterious and all too complicated Saskia.
Screw it! I've lived my life too safe for too damn long. The alluring ice princess brings out my inner alpha, and I plan to claim the woman I need.
Live Wire is a standalone romance. Containing graphic sexual content and harsh language, the book is only appropriate for adult readers age 18+.
Low angst sweet n sexy read with shades of romantic suspense.
I love Bijou Hunter's writing style, her characters are so unconventional and her dialogue hits my sweet spot. One of the few writers I know that can write witty, funny dialogue that can be stimulating and thought provoking. However I've been staying away from her bcos her characters are edgy, violent or victims - head of bikers gangs that peddle drugs, H's who are enforcers doing killing and clean-up, assassins for hire, who also specialize in torture on the side or heroines who are horrific victims suffering gang-rape, child sexual abuse for years. BH doesn't shy away from showing us the dark side even though its not full on gore. I'd rather read about characters who choose not to do that illegal stuff.
In this book we get a h's who is petite, a dead-pan stone cold Ukranian ex-assassin who is charmed by a sweet, slightly agoraphobic beta Mama's boy. Her frozen heart melts and she discovers love and turns to the light side. Its all done in a non-dramatic and believable way and the focus is entirely on the romance, the suspense part is treated as how its supposed to be, as a vehicle for the romance to progress and ignored once the romance takes center stage. I liked that the H wasn't that experienced in dating and was comfortable with his life - living in a lovely ranch with his Mom and her gay partner who are supportive but also give him lots of space. Hot sexy time scenes too! 4 stars! Safe romance.
4 1/2 stars. As a huge Bijou Hunter fan I have to be honest and say after her last book I wasn't sure how I would like Saskia. She wasn't a horrible person but I don't tend to like a lot of harsh females characters, I don't want a weakling or scardy-cat but I don't want a woman who walks into the room and tells her hero to sit in a corner. Ok so I'm going a little overboard but I was a tiny bit worried she would resinate with me. I don't know why I was worried at all Bijou never and I mean never has disappointed me. I always like her heroes (of course) and I always lover her heroines even with all the struggle they are great heroines. And of course Saskia is no different I loved her she wasn't a mean, tuff grrr female she was strong, and smart but also vulnerable and I loved her.
Yes I connected with her and yes I wanted her happy ending she was great and just another example of the range Bijou Hunter has in her characters. Yes Bijou Hunter writes damaged very well(which many can't quite like her) but she writes a wide range of characters and they all feel different and it seems Bijou isn't afraid to step out of the box, in fact it seems she through away any box or limitation she may have ever had. It seems she just keeps stretching and growing with each book and it shows.
When Brad comes out of hiding to promote a book about his tragic past the things that drove him into hiding seems to be right back at it. For his and his families safety Brad hires a security team known for their previous case and their ruthlessness. What Brad never expected was Saskia to walk through his door and knock him on his feet. Assigned to Brad Saskia of course notices how attractive he is but Saskia has a job and she plans to complete it and protect both Brad and his family while eliminating the threat. What she never could have planned was the feeling she has towards Brad and the feeling of home his house brings to her, something she has never known and maybe most importantly Brad's want for her and determination to get and keep her.
Protecting brad is all Saskia planned but soon her feeling for Brad become more and they both begin to fall in love. But the threat is still very real and Saskia and her team will have to find this threat before they hurt Brad. Soon Saskia begins to question if her feeling are clouding her ability to do her job, and maybe more importantly if her past has tainted her too much to be with someone so loving as Brad. Brad has other plans and that is to keep Saskia right where she is with him and he is very determined to do just that.
This is quite simply a great book. Bijou Hunter is an author I know I can always count on for a great book, that I fly though way too quickly. In the many, many, many romance books I have read over the years Bijou Hunter has managed to find her own special place in the romance genre that makes her stand out amongst the crowd of some amazing authors. Yes I rate Bijou Hunter's books high and some may say yeah she's just doing that because..... but she is just one of those authors who seems to write specifically for me. Her books like a few others just works for me and hits the right spot. I never think to myself well I'll read this book eventually or maybe ill read this, maybe not, no I always want more of her books, I always am on the look out for the next book from her. And though I beta/arc read for her I have personally with my own money bought many of her books, and I also find myself over and over re-reading these books when I am in a funk or the Bijou mood strikes.
This is the second book in a continuing series of standalone novels. You don’t technically need to read the preceding books to understand this one but you will enjoy the book more if you understand the characters’ history. There is no cliffhanger, but there is another book in the series. This series is a spin-off from the Damaged Series by the same author.
Saskia’s speciality is torture. Her mother was an assassin and taught her daughter how to kill in the same way she did. Her mother was evil and tried to make Saskia evil. Saskia doesn’t know how to connect with people at all. She’s scary, violent and a little lost. She got out of the assassination business because she was ‘bored’ and joined Ramsey Security to try something different.
Brad was a model and actor who got his big break in a paranormal series that was popular when he was 20. Then he was abducted by a demon worshipping cult and tortured. He managed to escape before he was sacrificed and never worked as an actor again. He moved back to Houston with his mother and his manager and lived in a big house in the suburbs, writing country music songs to earn a living. 10 years after his abduction he is approached by a writer to tell his story and finally gives in. Since then cultists have emerged to try and kill him again. He decides to hire Ramsey Security and Saskia becomes his bodyguard.
I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first in this series, because I felt it could have been more. Both Saskia and Brad were fascinating characters but the author seemed to keep things superficial. This author is more than capable of reaching deep into a characters emotions and exposing them, but in this case she chose to skim across the top of things. The plot as well was really interesting but the author chose to focus on the romance aspect of the story and the plot got a bit lost in amongst the rest.
I know I’ll carry on reading this author because I really love her books and I’ve read enough to know that this book, though enjoyable, isn’t her best work but there are other books that more than demonstrate her abilities. I think this could have been a really great book, instead it was just good. I feel a bit bad that I’m marking the book down because it doesn’t match the author’s previous standards, but I guess I’m just fickle that way.
Better than the first in the series, but still not Bijou at her Junkyard Dog best. I found it odd that they named their daughter Denise which sounds like a female version of Dennis (Stein).
I get that she had to change parts of herself, but I hate that she had to change everything. Troy didn’t, Rafael didn’t, I hate the double standards, though they were the norm in the year this was written it is still disappointing.
What I continue to applaud and admire Bijou Hunter for is her stellar ability to create such unapologetically intimidating and tough female characters, none more so than the brusque and terse former assassin Saskia, a woman of few words or emotions but with the knowledge on how to kill you in a million different ways and make it look like an accident. It is only when she is hired as security for former T.V star Brad Sloane that she begins to question her austere and muted existence, unable to forget the horrors of her past but confused and unsure about how to process that part of her life with where she is at now and how to compute her feelings regarding Brad, but who better to show her some light and fun in her life than the sweet, ripped and wonderful Brad. Brad is a brand new type of male protagonist to Bijou;s stories, if you're familiar with her books you'll know that our girl likes her men, dark, damaged and dangerous but Brad is a fresh new character, he's sweet, loves his mum and sees that Saskia has never experienced tenderness or affection and so in-between battling crazed demon worshipping stalkers, he makes it his mission to show Saskia all the goodness she deserves. The romance between Saskia and Brad delivered a well balanced mixture of comedy and seriousness with some scorching sex scenes that flame off of the sexual tension radiating from the mismatched pair from page one. The other completely noteworthy relationship in Live Wire is without a doubt Minka and Saskia, these two utterly clueless females together create something magical and absolutely hilarious; the banter, the wit and the constant bickering and digs at one another as they traverse a land unknown to them-friendship.
'"Men are ruled by their d***s, and d***s have no morals either." "Yeah, men will f**k anyone, but love is different. D***s don't come with all the feelings and hormonal s***t our vaginas do. Human dating rituals are very complicated, and I skipped a lot of those classes in High school. I just know men get freaked out by scary women like scary women don't get freaked out by scary men." "I suspect our figurative b***s are bigger than theirs, and they find that intimidating." "Probably. My figurative b***s can't fit into most rooms."
Live Wire is a terrific role reversal novel where the woman gets to be the kick-a$$ warrior and save the day and where the man is the one in need of protection but it's also a novel about second-chances in life and knowing when to grab onto them, knowing when to forgive yourself and knowing that you can be the kick-a$$ warrior and still be allowed to cry and fall in love and no one is going to think any less of you. As always, it's well written with the fantastic fast-paced illuminating and witty dialogue that Bijou always delivers.
While I love Bijou's books the last one 'Thunderstruck' didn't particularly work for me it started well but kinda fell a bit flat but it did introduce some interesting characters one of which was Saskia or Little Maven as she's know in some circles. Saskia was both intriguing and scary and I couldn't wait to read her story. Years ago Brad was catapulted to stardom in a supernatural show but some cultists couldn't separate his character from the half-breed son of a demon he played they abducted him with the intention of sacrifice but after having arcane symbols carved on his back he managed to kill the guy and escape. He disappeared from the limelight for ten years but now he's written a book and it's starting all over again. Ramsey Security are called and it's decided that Saskia will be the best fit for the job but the feelings she has for Brad take her completely by surprise and she's no idea what to do with them. While Brad experienced fame and fortune his experience has permanently changed him, he feels more comfortable having a woman around although he didn't expect to be so attracted to someone so lethal. Saskia had a truly dreadful early life and she's made the best she could of it but she's never really felt anything, not love nor sorrow she's been living in her own little world but her feelings for Brad are about to shake everything up. Once again I liked Bijou's characters but it's the wit and dialogue that I truly love, I want to give an example and I've chosen several but theres so many and one wouldn't do it justice but here's one chosen at random when Saskia and Minka are out on a girls night: "I don't have many girlfriends," she says, "For whatever reason, I've never gotten along with women." "You have a very harsh personality, and women seek kindness." "Do you need a hug?" "I imagine people often want to punch you." "I imagine that too. Hey, see how much we think alike?" Despite loving the humour, characters and dialogue again something was missing from this for me, I'm not sure exactly what but it didn't hold me like her 'Damaged' series did. The next book is Minka's so I'm going to have a break and come back to that.
I was given a copy by the author for an honest review. I'm a reader not a blogger so this is my own opinion.
This is the second book in the Ramsey Security series I don't normally like out spoken female characters as the heroine but I must say I loved Saskia. She was trained as a killer as a child and raised by emotionally damaged women with no love for her. After years of being an assassin she grows tired and joins a security team that specialise in protection aka Bodyguards. After seeing her best friend and ex lover Troy find something special with Darla (Thunderstruck) she decides she wants to find love in her cold life. Along comes Brad he needs protection from an evil Cult that's hell bent on sacrificing him to their demon. Brad is a very lovable character, he's soft, caring and thoughtful. He was raised by his mum and her female partner Nell. After being abducted 10 years earlier from the demon worshippers they go in to hiding, deciding to help write a book Brad unwittingly allows the worshippers to find him. And so the tale becomes interesting. I love how the characters balanced each other out emotionally, Brad warm to Saskia's cold I loved the ups and downs and everything in between. I admit I love everything Bijou writes, would I recommend this book? Yes definitely. Who would I recommend it too? Anyone who loves romance and suspense.

Brad Stone has been stashed away and content in his contained world until an old threat resurfaces. He takes steps to neutralize the threat and this brings the sexiest ex-killer into his life and from the moment he looks into her cold expressionless dead eyes his life changes. Saskia Kovial has a reputation for being a capable calculating ex-assassin turned security agent. Her reputation alone terrorized grown men but her sins never haunt her dreams. She lives with no regrets due to her profession. Brad has made her rethink decisions she made a long time ago. I really enjoyed the role reversals in the storyline of Live Wire. Saskia is a total alpha when it comes to taking care of bad guys. She's the same amounts sexy and sassy and can handle any situation. Brad has Hollywood good looks with an artistic side but likes to take control when it counts . The chemistry between the two sizzles. They work when they shouldn't. Enjoyed this read extremely. A bonus is the dialogue between Minka and Saskia, priceless. Great job Bijou Hunter! Can't wait for the next one.
Yes! I loved this one...it's dark in a way, it's sexy as hell and the relationships are interesting and complex (Brad and Saskia's, as well as the family dynamics and the "co-workers"). I especially loved (besides the whole cult mystery) the fact that this petite and gorgeous woman was in charge of protecting the hunted Brad and their conversations were perfectly written with the right amount of sarcasm, steam and comedic wit. My only wish is that the reveal at the end had a bit more detail though (it seemed to wrap up all the ends too neatly) and I would have loved to know what actually went down when the confrontation of Brad's stalker/informant was happening and being "dealt with". Mostly though, Live Wire was a really good mix of sexy romance with a murder mystery and I thought it was well written and smoothly paced. One of my favorite Bijou Hunter stories so far and hopefully we will hear more about some of the other characters in future books. I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.
***** 4.5 ***** "warming up the cold killer inside her heart" stars
Just when you thought Thunderstruck was awesome....BAM! Bijou hits us with the deadly and lovely Saskia.
Let me just say, it is so REFRESHING that there is an alpha role reversal between Brad and Saskia. You don't often see where the male takes the softer female role and allows the female to be the strong defender.
Both Brad and Saskia bring out the best in each other and provide the parts necessary to make each other whole. He makes her FEEL. Almost for the first time in her life she has emotion. She doesn't have to be - or want to be - Little Maven anymore. Saskia gives Brad the strength to go out and embrace what is on the outside of his secluded home.
I also enjoyed the glympse into the future of Saskia and Brad. Thats always a nice touch.
Lets see what Bijou has up her sleeve for Minka in the future!
This book was sent to me free in exchange for an honest and fair review. There's only Bijou Hunter that can take a run of the mill story line and make it into a book you can't put down. The writing is crisp and humorous ( as usual ) and the characters strong and believable. It's certainly steamy as per with her books but not crude as sometimes happens in this genre . A normal romantic story line is transformed into a " who dunnit " which is very enjoyable to read . Definitely one of my favourite writers I can't recommend this book highly enough.
I was intrigued by the heroine in the last book, so I had to read her story. After reading the book synopsis I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. Live Wire was just an okay read for me though. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't seem to connect with the main characters in this book like I have with the ones in the past. The story had a good flow to it. We saw some of the characters from the previous books we love. I love Bijou's stories. I cannot wait to read the next one.
I received an ARC of this book from the author for an honest review.
This is the first book I have read from this Author and won’t be the last. It was a little different from the other stories I’ve read because a female is the ultimate bad ass and the alpha. A Man is the one she is hired to protect. It is so awesome to see how she is so powerful and he has yet to find that confidence to be strong after everything that has happened to him. The relationship between the two of them is so unique and awesome because they help each other become the people they've always wanted to become.
I loved this novel! I love this author. I have to mention that I have read all of her other novels and loved them too. This author writes great dialogue and great banter. I don't know how this author grabs me and I literally will not be able to put the novel down. I highly recommend that you read this novel and Ms. Hunter's previous work. I find myself rereading her novels when I am in a book slump. I know that I will be looking for this author's next book.
I loved the second book in this series especially seeing the apha role reversed good to see a woman in charge protecting the victim !!! it is a great storyline regarding a cult fantatic which gives a bit of who dunnit feeling and I had no idea who until around 50 percent you start suspecting.
A great romance far from sweet but very raw and I like how saskia dont do love or romance but gets sucked right in.
detailed writing so your imagination follows suit a good read !!!
This story is quite different and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
Saskia being a retired killer is a strong Alpha heroine. On the other hand, Brad is a quieter and less aggressive hero which is unusual from what I normally read. Nevertheless, their relationship dynamic worked.
What also worked for me is the repartee between Saskia and her colleague Minka. I don't think I have ever read about two females who were awkward at having female friends.
I pretty much love everything Bijou Hunter writes. Live Wire was no exception. Saskia and Brad balanced and unbalanced each other out.... in the craziest, sexiest, sweetest way. I love the "bonding" between Minka and Saskia. Bijou Hunter brings such a refreshing sense of humor to her stories and I love it.
Saskia don't do love and don't do emotion until she takes on a job and everything changes Brad takes one look at Saskia and he has to have her but first Saskia must eliminate the people trying to kill Brad but can't get her mind of him. Another great read by Bijou hunter well done x
I really enjoyed reading this series .... I simply love this author I went on a reading rampage and read LOTS of books by this author I have so enjoyed them !!!
