Enough Rope With Andrew Denton 3

Rate this book
When he first started Enough Rope, Andrew Denton expressed the fear that he would wake up and see 'the yawning gap where his career used to be'. Now into its third year, Enough Rope is a highly acclaimed, award-winning program that is still as intelligent and provocative as ever. Andrew Denton's amicable spotlight has honed in on an eclectic array of celebrities, personalities, politicians, activists, artists, musicians and 'unsung' ordinary people, all with their own compelling stories to tell. Enough Rope 3 contains highlights from the 2005 season. It presents 25 noteworthy interviews including Peter Cundall, Jack Thompson, Cate Blanchett, Geraldine Brooks, Stephen Page, Bob Geldof, Natalie Imbruglia, Michael Stipe, the three shearers and many more. Also included are the compelling show and tell segments along with contributions from members of the viewing public. Don't miss the behind the scenes information - some of the interviews and bloopers that didn't make it to the TV screens.

A record of twenty nine interviews from a popular series of the "Enough Rope with Andrew Denton", broadcasted in 2005 by ABC Australia. I have watched some of its episodes and found them interesting, with its host, an engaging and congenial Andrew Denton. However, having read those interviews, I found only two of them to be of interest to me.

Geraldine Brooks, an Australia American journalist and novelist talked about her career as a foreign correspondent in a Middle East, the Iran-Iraq war and her imprisonment in Nigeria when investigating Shell Oil connections with the ruling military regime. She described her efforts to help provide college education for a few Palestinian kids while reporting from the Middle East.

Peter Cundall, an English-born Australian horticulturalist, who presented the ABC TV program Gardening Australia, who served in the British Parachute regiment during the war, responded to an ad in the British press for volunteers for the Australian Army. Telling them he had run a library during his service, he was promised a library job at Bondi. Upon arrival all the volunteers were put in the infantry and sent to Korea.

On the downside, Andrew Denton interviewed Rolf Harris, a convicted child molester, who at that time was considered an Australian entertaining legend, popular in the British TV, who was engaged to paint the Queen's portrait. It was before his activities were revealed, although Andrew Danton did considered him a riddle wrapped in an enigma.

I always enjoyed watching Enough Rope on the ABC, and reading these interviews from 2005 was a great pleasure. The translation of spoken material to written sometimes doesn't work very well, but a great job was done on these by Jon Casimir. Very good.
