1916-ish: A Young Adult Time Travel Romance Novel

Rate this book
Romance, time travel and daring adventure await Australian student Ingrid Calloway as she journeys to France in this Young Adult alternate-history novel from Ebony McKenna.

Little does Ingrid know that when she joins in a war-games re-enactment with her exchange brother and sister, it will turn into the real thing. Real guns, real dangers and real bullets put them in mortal peril in the midst of the First World War.

Suddenly Ingrid’s fighting two battles at once; one for her personal safety and another against her growing attraction to Luc, who looks super-hot in uniform.

Life in 1916 France soon takes a nasty turn - because the Eiffel Tower isn’t even there. They’re not just stuck in the past; they’re in a parallel world. How can they dodge the bullets of history when history won’t follow the script?

The trio must accept that the only way back to safety is the way they came. They must face the terrible frontlines in a last ditch effort to get home.

1916-ish. History, with a twist.

It was an enjoyable read where a few teens fall back in history but the history is not what they know it to be. Everything is skewed and they have no idea what or when and how of anything going wrong that might have tumbled that back in time. Thus, they haven't a clue how they an return to their own time.

Making do with what is available and living by using their wits on a constant basis these three struggle to make things clear but there is little they can do about their circumstances.

They try playing it safe, but safe is not the way to reach the destination which for them is their home. And it is between a World War that they have to make their way home.

I am not a big YA reader but I did very much enjoy this one.

Ingrid is from Melbourne and is an exchange student staying in France with the Durand family the twins Luc and Marianne are 16 the same age as Ingrid and for Ingrid trying to treat Luc like a brother is getting very hard for her but she has strict instructions from her mother to be very wary of the boys in France but yes Luc is hot and she is drawn to him.

Luc, Marianne and Ingrid go off to enjoy a re-enactment of war games little realizing that this will change their lives forever as somehow they end up travelling back in time to war torn France in 1916. Their journey to get themselves back home opens their eyes in many ways and Ingrid's Aussie humour will have you smiling as does her need for her medication but of course there is danger and also Ingrid's attraction to Luc is getting stronger and it appears to be reciprocated.

This is an action packed story that had me turning the pages and thoroughly enjoying as the three teenagers throw themselves into danger so as they can get home and to see Ingrid and Luc's friendship turning into more than just friendship really made me smile and I loved the little twist at the end with revenge this is a great story that I highly recommend.

1916-ish by Ebony McKenna - I took a leap out of familiar reading territory to read this novel. The book is about a few kids, teenagers to be exact, who all mysteriously travel back in time to 1916 France where war tears the country apart. It is the teenagers’ journey during this time of unrest and uncertainty that makes this story interesting. Overall, a good story set during historical times.

I just finished Ebony McKenna's novel 1916-ish and thoroughly enjoyed it! 1916-ish is a fantastic sci-fi novel involving war, time travel and a little bit of romance sprinkled in for good measure. I highly recommend it for young adults or for those that are young at heart.

It's a pretty good YA time travel. I likes the alternate history, what could have happened if certain events did or didn't take place. Very interesting twist too.

1916-ish: A Young Adult Time Travel Romance Novel by Ebony McKenna
This is a young adult travel romance and although I do not normally read then I have read Ebony McKenna before and enjoyed her writing. So thought I would try.
Has romance in it but it is young interaction between Ingrid Calloway and her friend Marianne Durand’s brother Luc. Hugs and some kisses between 2 that started off as friends and led to a budding romance.
The three became involved in war-games re-enactment and suddenly it turned into the real thing. They went back to the year around 1916-ish. There were real guns, real soldiers, and real bullets. They were actually periled into the First World War.
That is when Ingrid who always had a crush on Luc had a more growing attraction to him, as he looked hot in his uniform.
Life was not easy and there were in France and realized the Eiffel tower was not there. They needed to keep dodging the dangers of the war.
The trio worked in a shop marking material to be cut out and used for making uniforms for the soldiers. There they met Valerie and Henri but do not realize that Henri was also there after doing a war re-enactment. Valerie was in charge of the shop that made the uniforms.
They soon realized the only way to get back home is by going the way they came in. They must go to the frontlines in an effort to get home.
This story really gave a wonderful insight as to what war is like and how we would find things so different if one day it is 2015 and by night fall it is 1915.

I love time travel stories but this one comes with a twist. When Australian exchange student Ingrid is forced to participate in a re-enactment of the Battle of the Somme, not only does she find the uniform itchy but they seem to be firing real bullets. Ingrid and her companions, the swoon worthy Luc and his sister Marianne, find themselves in the middle of the actual battle, but it's not quite as the history books relate it. Not only have they fallen back in time but also into an alternative universe where the British never lost Calais...
The author has done a fabulous job of not only portraying the angst of a modern teenager stuck in the past without any modern props, but also in the company of a boy after whom she has been languishing, as only teenagers can. She also shows a good knowledge of the actual historical events of the time and has cleverly manipulated them to suit the 'ish' of 1916.
Highly recommended for Young Adults and Young at heart Adults.

A story of friends who in the young adult time travel romance, are embroiled in a war game reenactment that happens to turn into the real thing. They travel back to 1916 and are suddenly faces real guns and soldiers. They find that to survive they must become part of the time and go about making uniforms. A very different young adult story that will take you on the journey with them as they try to find their way home. There is adventure, drama and of course romance. An escape story that will keep you riveted till the end.

"1916-ish: A Young Adult Time Travel Romance Novel" by Ebony McKenna is my first read by this author. I tried to put myself in the shoes of a YA reading this and I liked it. Ingrid is an exchange student from Melbourne and staying with a family in France, The Durand's. She befriends the kids in the family who are twins Luc and Marianne and they are also 16. They re-enact war torn France in 1916, are transported back in time, and their lives will never be the same.

Enjoyable story with an interesting premise. I'd read it again for the historical aspect but, even for a young adult romance, there wasn't really much to write home about. The story itself was good and the kissing was a nice addition but not necessary at all.
