In the course of this compact and insightful work, Dr. Ronald Pies, tells us a little about what happiness is, and a lot about how to achieve it. The first chapter begins with a reminder from the great Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, that "things do not touch the soul." This, explains Pies, "is the keystone in the arch of Stoic philosophy." In a sense, then, the rest of the book is an extended meditation on how we might avoid letting things touch our souls too much. But, it is much more than simply a meditation. From here, Pies goes on to offer readers a well-researched, often witty explanation of how Stoic philosophy―as it resonates not only with Christian and Judaic, but also with Buddhist and Hindu worldviews―can guide and improve their lives. In the process, he draws on his own considerable clinical experience to offer composite case vignettes, both positive and negative, that illustrate the principles he is discussing.
Dr. Ronald Pies' "Everything Has Two Handles" is a succinct and enlightening exploration of Stoicism, a philosophy that resonates across centuries and cultures. This book gracefully bridges the gap between ancient wisdom and modern life, offering a treasure trove of insights that speak to the core of human existence.
Organized around key philosophical principles, Pies seamlessly melds research with his personal perspective, allowing readers to not only understand the tenets of Stoicism but also to witness its application in everyday life. Through his lens, Stoicism emerges not as a rigid doctrine, but as a dynamic guide for navigating the intricacies of our inner and outer worlds.
As I delved into the pages, several passages stood out as brilliant encapsulations of Stoic wisdom:
"In the face of adversity, the only true joy is self-possession." (Chapter 4)
"Be your own spectator... your own applauding audience." (Chapter 4)
"Do not pursue the past. Do not lose yourself in the future. The past no longer is. The future has not yet come." (Chapter 7)
Pies expertly emphasizes the importance of self-possession, highlighting how it empowers individuals to confront challenges with grace and equanimity. Moreover, the book encourages us to be present, to embrace the here and now with an unwavering acceptance of reality.
One of the book's notable strengths lies in its ability to bridge Stoicism with various religious and philosophical traditions. It beautifully illustrates how Stoicism shares common roots with Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism in their pursuit of harmonious values and a deeper understanding of existence.
"Everything Has Two Handles" serves as a valuable resource for both seasoned Stoics seeking a refresher on the core principles, and newcomers looking for a concise introduction to this profound philosophy. It provides a clear pathway to understanding how these ancient teachings remain as relevant and crucial for happiness in life today as they were centuries ago.
In conclusion, "Everything Has Two Handles" is a beacon of Stoic wisdom that transcends time and culture. Dr. Ronald Pies weaves together ancient and contemporary insights, offering readers a compass for navigating life's complexities. By embracing the Stoic principles outlined in this book, we gain not only a deeper understanding of ourselves but also the tools to lead a life of purpose, contentment, and integrity.
I read this book over a very long period of time, through many interruptions and disruptions, but I finally finished it today. It introduces the basics of Stoic thinking, often presented with similar ideas from other philosophies and religions. Plenty of examples are included to illustrate the working of the principles under discussion. A useful introduction to Stoicism.
I really think stoicism is the best way to think in life, but I had to stop reading this book after three chapters since I don't enjoy a book that has more references than content. I will just find another book about the same subject. I really enjoyed the books written by Ryan Holiday so I'll try to find something similar.
Sucinto pero bueno. Analiza situaciones cotidianas para resolverlas con estoicismo. Una mitad es de estoicismo puro, la otra es mayormente de reflexiones análogas en el judaísmo.
The was an ebook. I read this book to get a different point of view on philosophy. This book had great insight, it was well written and easy to understand.
So good I read it twice! This book is wonderful. I found it extremely helpful and just what I needed on my current life path. I think the strength of this book lies in how Pies presents his topic with very limited commentary to get in the way of the material. Pies clearly sets out his themes and gives the reader the space to freely contemplate various quotes and ideas from Stoic philosophers and other sources. At the same time, he adds in some real life examples which serve to ground these philosophical ideas and make them applicable to everyday living.
