- Περιπολικό Ένα προς Κέντρο. Κέντρο, με ακούς;
- Κέντρο προς Περιπολικό Ένα. Σε ακούω. Τι συμβαίνει;

aka Barnaby Ross.
(Pseudonym of Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee)
"Ellery Queen" was a pen name created and shared by two cousins, Frederic Dannay (1905-1982) and Manfred B. Lee (1905-1971), as well as the name of their most famous detective. Born in Brooklyn, they spent forty two years writing, editing, and anthologizing under the name, gaining a reputation as the foremost American authors of the Golden Age "fair play" mystery.

Although eventually famous on television and radio, Queen's first appearance came in 1928 when the cousins won a mystery-writing contest with the book that would eventually be published as The Roman Hat Mystery. Their character was an amateur detective who used his spare time to assist his police inspector father in solving baffling crimes. Besides writing the Queen novels, Dannay and Lee cofounded Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, one of the most influential crime publications of all time. Although Dannay outlived his cousin by nine years, he retired Queen upon Lee's death.

Several of the later "Ellery Queen" books were written by other authors, including Jack Vance, Avram Davidson, and Theodore Sturgeon.

Generally entertaining crime novel about a cop named Ted Saxon, whose dad—the Chief of Police—is murdered. Ted no sooner installed as replacement chief than somebody frames him for sexual assault. He must then clear his name. Nothing terribly innovative about the story, but it's decent if unspectacular, with the usual red herrings and occasional twist. Ghostwritten by Richard Deming.

I picked this up expecting an Ellery Queen mystery. I isn't. It is written under the Ellery Queen name and is one of a number that were not Ellery Queen mysteries.

Ted Saxon is a lieutenant on the local police department where his dad, Andy, is the Chief of Police. When Andy is ambushed and killed, Ted is made interim chief. Ted vows to find out who killed his dad.

A new mayor has been voted into office and there are questions as to who is behind him. A faction is pushing to bring harness racing into the small town of Iroquois, along with the syndicate and gambling. Something most of Iroquois doesn't want.

On New Years Eve, Ted winds up working so the majority of the department can enjoy the evening. Normally a quiet evening, it turns bad for Ted when a detective stops in the station with a female prisoner he is transporting. The detective isn't feeling well and wants to leave her in the custody of the Iroquois police while he visits the local hospital ER t find out what is wrong with him. Ted is fine with that and locks her in a cell. He has also wound up with another prisoner due to a traffic violation.

When Ted goes to do a routine check on the female prisoner, he finds she has attempted to hang herself with her scarf. When he unlocks the cell door he finds it's all a set-up and he is framed for something he didn't do. He is dismissed from the department while an investigation is done to find out the truth.

Even though he has no police power or privileges he continues to investigate and use his contacts to find the truth about his dad's murder and his frame-up.

It's a short book and fast read. It was OK, but I really had my heart set on Ellery...

A classic cops vs. bad guys novel. Not my preferred genre; read for a Goodreads challenge. It was a good, quick read and took me along for the ride, but I don’t plan on reading any more by this author.
