A richly illustrated companion to the popular Showtime series about a group of gay men and women in Pittsburgh features season-by-season episode synopses, interviews with members of the cast and crew, profiles of the main characters, and behind-the-scenes trivia and information, and is accompanied by a DVD containing never-before-seen-footage. I was born and raised in Philadelphia where I lived a typical childhood with a far more interesting fantasy life. I mean, how many other eight year olds were sticking their Star Wars action figures in Ziploc bags filled with water and putting them in the freezer to recreate the ice planet of Hoth? (Really? That many? Never mind.)
After college, I moved to Los Angeles and was very lucky to get a job as a page at Paramount Pictures only months after I got into town. I worked as a tour guide and usher, and I performed temp office work around the lot. Eventually, I took a position working in the studio's licensing department where I quickly worked my way up to middle management.
After a while, one of my friends in the publishing industry offered me the opportunity to write a Buffy, The Vampire Slayer short story for a collection she was editing. Well, when I heard how little money I could make as a writer, I immediately quit my job to try it full time. (Stupid, I know, but it kind of worked for me.)
I started out by writing books based on such wonderful TV shows as Star Trek, Roswell, and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. I have since written over 30 books based some of the best shows on TV, adding The West Wing, Alias, and Prison Break to that ever growing list.
While I continue to work on these media tie-ins, I have also been focused more on my own original fiction, including my teen series DRAMA! and the Simon Pulse Romantic Comedy Love, Hollywood Style.
I absolutely love the show and this book is a must-read for fans. It was great getting a behinds the scenes look at the show and to read the actors' perspectives on their characters. The only problem is that this book only covers the first three seasons - I wish they would release another edition covering the whole series!
You don't have to be queer to like this ... but it helps! If you loved the series, you'll love this stylish book, jam packed with photos, an episode guide, actor biographies, isolated scene analysis and lots and lots of gossip. The ultimate fan book but also a well put together intelligent keepsake of this memorable breakthrough series. Each episode is listed with a photo, credits and synopsis plus comments from a relevant participant in the show. A thorough interpretation of all the main characters is also included but its the photographic side of a very visual show that will win you over. There is significant debate over which television series was better. I probably lean towards the original British series made for Channel 4 but both are very good and certainly revolutionary for the time. I remember back in 1999/2000 when the British series first screened on Australian cable television, it was deemed so controversial that subscribers had to ring a secret telephone number to find out which channel it was going to be aired on!! Can you believe that? Boy, how things have changed! And not before time!
Assolutamente favoloso!
The US version of Queer as Folk was a pale imitation of the original UK version, which was just one series and ended with a two hour movie. The Showtime series went on about two seasons too long and became increasingly more unbelievable and bizarre as it went on. Thankfully, Sharon Gless held it all together as Debbie.
