At the request of King George III, British naval officer Bartholomew Hoare searches for a traitor at the highest levels of the Admiralty. By the author of Hoare and the Headless Captains.
Well, I thought this was the first in the series, but it’s the 3rd and last. I won’t bother digging up the 1st. Some folks I know really like these books, but I find them awfully thin. All the shortcomings I noted in my review of the previous book are to be found in this one as well, and possibly in greater supply. The frequent, not to say constant, reference to previous adventures turns out to be just as annoying when you have read them as when you haven’t. The insertion of familiar turns of phrase from other works (“messing about in boats”, “keep close to my desk and never go to sea”, etc.) is not nearly as cute or clever as the author apparently supposes. And in this one, the machinations of plot are just feeble. Pfui.
